You can see Hunza in one day from Gilgit, but only its core: Karimabad, Baltit Fort, Altit Fort and a view at sunset. Gilgit to Karimabad is about 100 km on the Karakoram Highway, and sources give anywhere from two and a half to four hours each way depending on the road, so you spend five to seven hours of the day in the car. Attabad Lake, Passu and Khunjerab do not fit.
If you have only one day, this guide shows what to pick, in what order, and what to drop. It is a plan built from published distances, drive times and site histories, not an account of a trip we made.

Is one day enough for Hunza?
It is enough for a taste, not for the valley. Travel guides that cover this say a day trip from Gilgit is possible but tight, and that two nights is the minimum to cover the two forts, the old town and a sunrise viewpoint, with three nights allowing an Attabad Lake day. Most of the day goes on the road.
If you can, stay a night. Our two-day Hunza itinerary is the gentler version of this plan. For the road, see Gilgit to Hunza distance.
A realistic plan for the day
- Leave Gilgit by 6:30 to 7:00 am. You will arrive in Karimabad between about 9:30 and 11 am. The sooner you leave, the more daylight you have for the forts and the drive back.
- Baltit Fort in Karimabad. The core of the fort is dated to the 8th century CE by Wikipedia, with large rebuilding in the 16th century. It was restored with Aga Khan Trust for Culture support, a programme completed in 1996, and is run today as a museum by the Baltit Heritage Trust. Allow about an hour. See our Baltit Fort guide.
- Lunch in Karimabad. Pick a place along the bazaar road and keep it short. See best restaurants in Hunza.
- Altit Fort. Wikipedia describes Altit as about 1,100 years old and the oldest monument in Gilgit-Baltistan, restored by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture with Norwegian support and reopened in 2007. There is a garden with a cafe. Entry fees differ for visitors and residents and have changed, so check on arrival. Our Altit Fort guide has more.
- Late afternoon viewpoint. One travel guide suggests Duikar, at about 2,800 metres, for sunset. Our photography spots guide and Eagle's Nest guide cover the options.
- Leave Karimabad by 4:30 pm at the latest if you want to be back in Gilgit before dark.
What to skip
- Attabad Lake lies beyond Karimabad on the road towards Gulmit, and adding it turns a tight day into a late one. It deserves its own time: see Attabad Lake.
- Passu Cones and Khunjerab Pass are much too far for a day from Gilgit. Khunjerab is a full day from Karimabad on its own.
- Shopping and hiking are for a longer stay.
If Attabad matters more to you than the forts, swap them, but do not try to do both on a one-day return trip.
Getting there: car, van or tour
Most people do this day in a hired car with a driver from Gilgit, since it gives control over timing. Shared vans do run from Gilgit to Karimabad through the day, leaving when full, and one 2026 guide puts the fare at roughly PKR 300 to 500. They suit the outward journey better than a same-day return, since afternoon departures north to south are thinner. Our day trips from Gilgit guide covers the options, and renting a car in Gilgit covers hire.
Season and weather
Spring and autumn give the clearest light; summer is hot in the valley bottom; winter days are short and some roads close. If daylight is the limit, check sunset time for your month before you plan the last stop. See best time to visit Hunza.
Is a one-day trip worth it?
For someone based in Gilgit with a spare day, yes: Baltit and Altit are the heart of Hunza's history, and the drive is memorable. For a first visit to Pakistan's north with five or more days, spend the money on a night in Karimabad. A hurried day gives you the fort photos and little else, and a tired driver on a mountain highway after dusk is the real risk.
Our Gilgit and Hunza page shows how longer trips fit together.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Hunza from Gilgit?
About 100 km to Karimabad on the Karakoram Highway. Drive time is roughly two and a half to four hours depending on conditions.
Can I visit Hunza in one day from Gilgit?
Yes, if you start early and limit yourself to Karimabad, Baltit and Altit. Attabad Lake, Passu and Khunjerab need more time.
What time should I leave Gilgit for a day in Hunza?
By about 6:30 to 7:00 am, and be on the road back by late afternoon so you are in Gilgit before dark.
Is Khunjerab Pass possible as a day trip from Gilgit?
Not realistically. It is a full day's drive from Karimabad on its own, so it needs a night in upper Hunza.
Is a day trip better than staying overnight?
An overnight stay is better for almost everyone. A day trip works if you are already in Gilgit and short on time.
