The route

Day by day

Nine days along one road, climbing from Gilgit at 1,500 metres to the Khunjerab Pass at close to 4,700, with enough time in Hunza to stop treating it as a thoroughfare.

Group sizes and accommodation names are still to be confirmed by the brand.

  1. Day 1

    Arrive in Gilgit

    Fly in or arrive off the Karakoram Highway. An easy first evening in the bazaar.

  2. Day 2

    Gilgit

    The Kargah Buddha carved into the cliff, the rock inscriptions at Danyore, and the suspension bridge over the river.

  3. Day 3

    Gilgit to Karimabad

    North on the KKH, stopping at Ghulmet for Rakaposhi, which rises seven thousand metres straight out of the valley.

  4. Day 4

    Karimabad

    Baltit Fort in the morning, Altit and the old settlement after lunch, and Duiker for sunset over the whole valley.

  5. Day 5

    Attabad and Passu

    Out on the lake by boat, then on to the Passu Cones and the Hussaini bridge. Night in Gulmit or Passu.

  6. Day 6

    Khunjerab Pass

    Up through the national park to the border at about 4,693 metres. Thin air, a short stay, and back down for the night.

  7. Day 7

    Hopper and Nagar

    Across the river into Nagar for the Hopper glacier, which is grey, enormous and audible.

  8. Day 8

    Naltar Valley

    A rough jeep road to the coloured lakes and the pine forest above Gilgit.

  9. Day 9

    Depart

    Out from Gilgit by air or road, again with a spare day held for weather.
