Babusar, Khunjerab, Shandur, Deosai and the valley roads: when each one is usually open, what closes it, and the weather on it right now.

This page is not a live road report. Each badge compares today's date with the road's usual season from our guide, and the weather is live. Roads close without notice for snow, landslides and repairs, so call before you set off:

  • 130 Motorway police (NHMP), for the motorways and the highways they patrol
  • 1422 Gilgit-Baltistan Tourist Police, inside Gilgit-Baltistan (05811-930055 from elsewhere)
  • 1122 Rescue

4,693 m on the China border, 1.5 to 2 hours from Sost. Kept open since December 2024, but snow often blocks it in winter.

About 3,700 m between Chitral and Gilgit. The Gilgit-Baltistan side usually clears first.

Most reliable from late June to mid-September. Heavy rain and landslides can close it for days in July and August.

Reopened around 20 April in 2025 and 2026. Mansehra to Kaghan town stays open all year, landslides apart.

Lowari tunnel

10.4 km of tunnels between Upper Dir and Lower Chitral on the N-45; open to all traffic since early August 2026, with a toll since 1 July 2026.

About 35 km of broken N-95, 1.5 to 3 hours. An ordinary car manages in dry weather.

The last 75 to 80 km to Thal is broken tarmac and gravel; 4x4 only beyond Thal.

Paved to Keran (about 3 hours from Muzaffarabad); a normal car reaches Kel in dry weather.
