Breathe a higher story

Journeys for every kind of traveller

Some people come for the altitude, some for the quiet. These are the four shapes most trips take, and every one of them can be slowed down or stretched out.

Majestic peaks

Five of the world's fourteen eight-thousanders stand in northern Pakistan, and two of them can be reached on foot by anyone who is fit and patient. We plan the walking days short enough that the mountain is something you look at rather than something you survive.

Where we take it

  • Concordia and the K2 viewpoint, by way of the Baltoro glacier
  • Fairy Meadows and the Rakhiot face of Nanga Parbat
  • Rakaposhi base camp from the Hunza valley
  • Day walks from Karimabad and Skardu for shorter trips

Pristine lakes

The lakes are the north at its most photographed and its most crowded, so timing is most of the work. We start early and go in the order that keeps you ahead of the day traffic.

Where we take it

  • Shangrila and Upper Kachura, above Skardu
  • Attabad, on the Hunza river
  • Saif-ul-Malook, above Naran in the Kaghan valley
  • Sheosar, on the Deosai plateau
  • The Naltar lakes, by jeep from Gilgit

Untamed beauty

Some of the best days in the north have no summit and no itinerary. We leave space for them on purpose, because the plateau in the afternoon and the meadow at first light are what people come back talking about.

Where we take it

  • The Deosai plateau in July, in full flower
  • Hopper and Passu glaciers, close enough to hear
  • The pine forests of upper Swat and the Kaghan valley
  • Arang Kel and the meadow villages of Azad Kashmir

Bigger journeys

The Karakoram Highway is the trip for travellers who would rather keep moving. It runs from the plains to the Chinese border, and every day of it looks different from the last.

Where we take it

  • Islamabad to Khunjerab, the full length of the KKH
  • The Babusar Pass and the Kaghan valley, open in summer
  • Skardu to Khaplu along the Shyok
  • Gilgit to Chitral over the Shandur Pass

Timeless beauty · Serene waters · Living culture
