Swat and Kalam in 3 days

This is the shortest trip we plan to upper Swat: the motorway to Mingora and Malam Jabba on the first day, Kalam and the jeep road to Mahodand Lake on the second, and the drive home on the third. It suits people who can take a Friday off and do not mind two long road days. The road above Bahrain is still broken in places after the 2022 floods, so the times below are honest rather than hopeful.

A private trip for your group. Dates, pace and hotels are set around you and confirmed in writing with your quote.

Travel note, October 2026: Malam Jabba and Kalam are open, but nights in Kalam are near freezing by late October and the jeep road to Mahodand closes with the first heavy snow, so we confirm it with Kalam drivers before each departure. Police in Swat have been on high alert since the Kabal attack on 2 August 2026; we check the latest advice before setting out.

  1. Day 1

Islamabad to Mingora and Malam Jabba

We collect you early and take the M-1 and the Swat Motorway (M-16) to Chakdara, then the ordinary road past Batkhela to Mingora. From Mingora the Malam Jabba road climbs about 40 km to the resort, where the chairlift and other rides are paid at the resort counter. We come back down before dark and stay in Mingora or Saidu Sharif, the two towns that make up the district headquarters, so that the next day starts close to Kalam.

Drive: About 4 to 5 hours to Mingora, then about 1 to 1.5 hours each way to Malam Jabba · Night: Mingora

  2. Day 2

Kalam, Mahodand Lake and the Ushu forest

We leave Mingora early for the 99 km run to Kalam. The road is mostly good as far as Bahrain (about 60 km) and slow after it: in June 2026 the provincial government listed seven badly damaged sections on the Kalam road, the longest about 2 km near Kalam. In Kalam you change to a local jeep for the 35 to 40 km unpaved road up the Ushu valley to Mahodand Lake, two and a half to three hours each way. On the way back the jeep stops in the Ushu forest, about 8 km above Kalam.

Drive: About 3 to 4 hours to Kalam, then 5 to 6 hours return by jeep · Night: Kalam

  3. Day 3

    Kalam to Islamabad

After breakfast there is time for a walk by the river or around the Kalam bazaar before we start down the valley. The broken sections above Bahrain are slow in both directions, and traffic builds near Mingora and on the Swat Motorway on Sunday afternoons, so we aim to leave Kalam by mid-morning. We drop you at home in Islamabad or Rawalpindi, usually in the evening.

Drive: About 7 to 9 hours, 99 km to Mingora and then the motorway

Good to know before you book

Is Swat safe for tourists right now?

Pakistani families still travel to Malam Jabba and Kalam in large numbers, and the district administration said in May 2026 that all tourist routes were open. On 2 August 2026, though, a suicide bomber attacked the Kabal police station near Mingora and 17 people were killed (Dawn, Al Jazeera). The UK advises against all travel to Swat (updated 13 October 2026). We check police advice the day before every departure and change the plan if we need to. Overseas visitors should read their own government's advice, which can affect insurance.

What is the road from Bahrain to Kalam like?

The Kalam road (N-95) is mostly good as far as Bahrain, about 60 km above Mingora, and slow beyond it. Sections washed out in the 2022 floods were patched rather than rebuilt; in June 2026 the KP Chief Minister wrote to the NHA about seven damaged stretches totalling about 4.9 km, including 1.1 km through Bahrain bazaar and 2.1 km near Kalam. Expect slow, bumpy driving and queues in peak season. Heavy rain can close it for hours.

Why do we use a local jeep for Mahodand?

The 35 to 40 km road from Kalam up the Ushu valley is unpaved, with stream crossings and rough patches that a car or coaster should not attempt. Local jeeps from Kalam run it every day in season and the drivers know where it washes out. The ride takes two and a half to three hours each way, so this is the longest part of the trip. Bring a jacket: the lake is at 2,865 m and cold even in July.

What is open in which month?

Kalam and Malam Jabba are open all year, but this trip is planned for May to October. The Mahodand jeep road is usable from late spring until the first heavy snow, which can come from late October. July and August are the busiest months and also the monsoon, when the Swat River rises fast and landslides are more likely; keep away from riverbanks during rain. In winter, Malam Jabba becomes a ski resort and Kalam sees heavy snow.

Will my phone work, and should I carry cash?

Mobile data works in Mingora and, more patchily, in Kalam. Expect little or no signal on the jeep road to Mahodand and at the lake, so tell family at home when you will be out of reach. Draw cash in Islamabad or Mingora, because card payments are rare in Kalam and you should not rely on finding a working ATM there on a busy weekend.

Is this trip too much for young children?

Children usually manage the altitude well, since nothing on this trip is above 2,865 m. The harder part is the time in vehicles: two long road days and five to six hours in a jeep on Day 2. If you are travelling with small children or elderly parents, we suggest a fourth day so that Mahodand gets a day of its own and the drives are shorter.
