Mahodand Lake: Jeep Track, Boating and Camping

Mahodand Lake is a long, cold lake at about 2,865 metres at the head of the Ushu valley, 35 to 40 km above Kalam. You reach it by jeep in about two hours each way, on a road that is mostly paved through Ushu and Matiltan and a rough track beyond. It is open to visitors roughly from late May or June to October, and at the shore you will find boats, horses, trout stalls and tent camps, but no hotels.

How do you get from Kalam to Mahodand?

The route follows the Ushu River north-east from Kalam, through forest most of the way:

1. Kalam to Ushu, about 8 km. Past hotels and into the deodar and pine of Ushu Forest, at around 2,300 metres.
2. Ushu to Matiltan, about 3 km more. On a clear day there is a view up to Falak Sar, at 5,918 metres the highest peak in Swat.
3. Matiltan to the lake. The road narrows into a rocky track through the upper valley and villages such as Paloga, with streams to ford and places where one jeep waits for another.

The provincial government has been rebuilding the 34 km road to Mahodand since 2024 and now lists the work as complete. Even so, reports from the 2026 season still describe the section beyond Matiltan as a rough, narrow track, so plan on a jeep unless you hear otherwise in Kalam. Most people hire a jeep in Kalam bazaar. In 2026 the return trip cost roughly PKR 7,000 to 9,000 for the whole jeep in June and September, and more in July, August and at Eid; our Kalam jeep fare guide has the details and how to bargain. You may take your own vehicle, and the authorities have said so publicly, but only a high-clearance 4x4 with an experienced driver should go beyond Matiltan.

When to leave: by 7 or 8 in the morning. You reach the lake before the crowds, the light on the water is better, and you are back in Kalam well before dark.

When is Mahodand open?

The lake is under snow and ice for much of the year, and the track closes with it.

• April and May: the lake is frozen or partly frozen, and snow and glacier debris block the track in the upper valley. The first jeeps usually get through in late May or June, once it is cleared.
• June to August: reliably open. The meadows are green and the snow is still on the peaks. July and August are the busiest months.
• September and early October: still open, quieter and clearer. Nights are very cold, and an early snowfall can close the track for the season.
• Late October to April: closed.

What is at the shore?

Mahodand has no hotels or permanent buildings of any size. What you find is seasonal:

• Tent camps and basic huts, run by local people, for anyone staying the night.
• Tea stalls and simple eating places, many frying trout. The lake is known for its trout.
• Horses for rides along the shore.
• Boats for short trips on the water.
• Parking for jeeps near the water.

Prices at the lake are set on the spot and are higher than in Kalam. Settle the price of food, rides and boats before you start, and carry cash.

The lake itself is best seen on foot. Walk away from the parking area along the shore and within ten minutes the crowd thins out. A smaller lake, Saifullah Lake, sits at about 2,910 metres, a 10 to 15 minute walk above Mahodand, and some jeeps drive up to it.

Boating: what changed after July 2026

On 1 July 2026 a tourist boat capsized on Saifullah Lake, just above Mahodand, and seven members of one family from Punjab died. Preliminary findings were that the boat had gone beyond its safe area when its engine failed and the operator lost control. Residents said boats on the lake lacked proper life jackets and rescue equipment.

After the accident the provincial government ordered an inquiry, and in late July the Upper Swat district administration began inspecting and registering all boats at Mahodand. Boats are not allowed to operate without a valid NOC.

If you want to go out on the water:

• Ask to see life jackets, and wear one, adults and children alike. If there are none, don't go.
• Don't overload the boat, whatever the operator says.
• Stay near the shore and come in if the wind picks up.
• Skip it with small children unless you are completely satisfied with the boat and the jackets.

The water is glacier-fed and very cold. Falling in, even close to the bank, is dangerous.

Staying overnight at the lake

A night at Mahodand gives you the lake at dawn and dusk, without the day-trippers. The local tent camps provide a tent and bedding; you can also bring your own. Our guide to camping in Kalam compares Mahodand with the other sites around Kalam and covers what to bring.

Arrange your return with the jeep driver before he leaves you, with a time and a place, because signal at the lake is unreliable.

Cold-weather tips

Mahodand is about 850 metres higher than Kalam, and noticeably colder. The sun is warm at midday, but the wind off the water is cold even in July, and nights in June and September can drop to a few degrees above freezing.

• Bring a warm jacket, a hat and gloves in every month, and keep them in the jeep, not the hotel.
• Dress children more warmly than you think they need.
• Don't swim. The water is snow and glacier melt.
• In October, nights at the lake can fall below freezing.
• Carry sunscreen and sunglasses. The sun at this height burns quickly.

The altitude is not extreme, but some people feel it as a mild headache or breathlessness after the climb from Kalam. Walk slowly and drink water.

Crowds and litter

On summer weekends, and above all at Eid, the track is a line of jeeps and the shore by the parking area is crowded and noisy. Environmental groups in Swat have complained that popular sites, Mahodand among them, are being spoiled by plastic and rubbish left by visitors.

Go early, go on a weekday if you can, and take every piece of rubbish back to Kalam with you.

Is Mahodand worth it?

For most visitors to Kalam, yes. It is the best day out from the town, and the drive up through Ushu Forest is half the pleasure. Four or five hours round trip in a jeep is a lot for small children and older parents, though, and on a crowded Eid weekend the lake can feel more like a car park than a mountain lake.
