Kalam Jeep Fare: 2026 Rates to Mahodand, Ushu and Gabral

The Kalam jeep fare that matters most is Mahodand Lake: in 2026 a jeep for the return trip costs roughly PKR 7,000 to 9,000 in June and September, and around PKR 12,000 to 15,000 in July, August and at Eid. That is for the whole vehicle, which takes four or five adults, with waiting time at the lake. For Ushu and Blue Water you may not need a jeep at all, and Gabral and Desan are priced by the driver according to distance and waiting.

These are asking rates gathered from several 2026 sources, not quotes. Fares move with the month, the crowd and the fuel price, so use them to judge what you are offered.

How jeep fares work in Kalam

Jeeps wait in Kalam bazaar, and your hotel can call one. They are hired by the vehicle, not the seat, and the usual arrangement is a return trip: the driver takes you out, waits while you spend time at the far end, and brings you back.

That means the fare depends on four things:

• Where you are going, and how rough the track is.
• How long the driver waits. An hour or two at the lake is normal; half a day is not.
• Which stops you want on the way, such as Ushu, Matiltan or Saifullah Lake.
• When you go. The same run can cost far more at Eid than on a weekday in June.

Fares are not metered, and we found no official fare list for these runs. Everything is agreed before you get in.

Mahodand Lake: the main run

Mahodand, about 35 to 40 km up the Ushu valley, is the trip most people hire a jeep for. The road is mostly paved through Ushu and Matiltan, then becomes a rough track with stream crossings, and the jeep takes about two hours each way.

In 2026, asking rates for the whole jeep, return, were roughly:

• June and September: about PKR 7,000 to 9,000.
• July and August: about PKR 12,000 to 15,000, once the bargaining settles.
• Eid and long weekends: expect the top of that range or more, and go early, before the bazaar runs short of jeeps.

Before you agree, ask whether the fare includes stops at Ushu Forest and Matiltan, which are on the way, and a walk up to Saifullah Lake above Mahodand. Boats, horses and food at the lake are extra and paid there. Our Mahodand Lake guide covers what is at the shore.

Some drivers fill a jeep seat by seat when enough people are waiting in the bazaar. For one or two people it can be much cheaper than hiring the whole vehicle. Ask for the per-seat price, and expect less choice over when you leave and how long you stay.

Ushu, Matiltan and Blue Water: do you need a jeep at all?

Often not. The road from Kalam to Ushu, about 8 km, and on to Matiltan, about 11 km, is mostly paved, and ordinary cars drive it in dry weather. Blue Water, in the Anakar valley, is a short side road off the Utror road, about 4 km from Kalam, and cars reach it too.

If you have your own car, drive to these yourself and save the jeep for Mahodand. If you came by bus or group tour, a jeep or a local car to Ushu and back costs less than the Mahodand run; ask for the price with waiting time included.

Utror, Gabral and Shahi Bagh

West of Kalam, the road to Utror is about 16 km and narrow and rough in places, and Gabral is about 7 km further. A jeep is the sensible choice for both, and essential for Shahi Bagh, the camping meadow up the Gabral valley.

There is no going rate for these runs that we could confirm. Drivers price them by distance, track and waiting time. As a rule of thumb:

• Utror and back is a shorter run than Mahodand and should cost less.
• Gabral adds distance and rougher track.
• Shahi Bagh is about 30 km from Kalam over jeep track, a similar kind of trip to Mahodand, and will be priced like one.

Desan Meadows

The jeep track to Desan climbs steeply from behind the town, near the Walnut Heights hotel, and the ride up is slow. The fare depends on how far up the driver goes and how long he waits while you walk. Agree the drop-off point as well as the price, because "Desan" can mean anywhere from the first meadows to the end of the track. Our Desan Meadows guide compares the jeep with walking up.

Waiting charges, extra stops and other add-ons

Most arguments with drivers are not about the fare but about what it was supposed to cover. Settle these before you set off:

• Waiting time. Agree how long the driver waits at each stop. If you may want longer, ask the rate for extra time now, not at the lake.
• Stops. List every stop: Ushu, Matiltan, Saifullah Lake, a tea break.
• One way or return. If you plan to camp at Mahodand or Shahi Bagh, you need two trips, and the driver has to come back for you on a set day.

A tip for a driver who has waited patiently or stopped wherever you asked is normal and appreciated.

How to bargain without falling out

Kalam's jeep drivers expect to be asked the price, and a counter-offer is normal. A few habits make it easier:

1. Ask your hotel first what the run should cost this week, so you know the range.
2. Ask two or three drivers in the bazaar before agreeing.
3. Go early. In the morning you have more choice of jeeps, and a whole day ahead of you.
4. Travel in a full jeep. Five people sharing a fare pay a fifth each; a couple pays half each.
5. Agree everything out loud and repeat it back: destination, stops, waiting time, total.

Don't bargain over the vehicle itself. Look at the tyres, ask the driver how long he has been running the route, and walk away from a jeep that looks worn out, however cheap it is.

Can you use your own vehicle instead?

Yes. Nobody can require you to hire a local jeep. In May 2026 a group of locals stopped tourists travelling to Mahodand in coasters and tour vehicles, insisting they use local transport; the police registered a case against around 30 people, and officials said visitors are free to travel in their own vehicles.

Whether your vehicle should go is a separate question. A high-clearance 4x4 with an experienced driver can manage the Mahodand track in dry weather. A sedan or a loaded coaster should stop at Matiltan. A local driver knows where the fords are deep and where to wait for oncoming traffic.

Is a jeep worth the money?

For Mahodand, yes, and there is no sensible way to see the lake without one unless you have your own 4x4. It is best value for a group of four or five, and poor value for a couple travelling alone, who should look for a shared seat or share a jeep with another small group from their hotel.
