The best food in Kalam is grilled or fried trout at a riverside restaurant in the bazaar, followed by chapli kebab, pulao and hot tea from the small dhabas and hotel dining rooms. Most places serve a similar menu of Pashtun and Swati dishes, so the setting, the freshness of the fish and the price you agree before ordering matter more than the name over the door.
This guide covers what to order, the kinds of places to eat in the bazaar, at Ushu and on the jeep trips, and how to avoid the usual surprises. We have kept restaurant names to the few that appear in recognised listings, because small places in Kalam change hands and menus from season to season.

What to eat in Kalam
Trout
Swat's cold mountain streams support a large trout industry. A 2026 feature quoted the Swat Trout Fish Farming Association as saying that around 160 trout farms operate in the area and employ about 3,500 people. In Kalam the fish is usually marinated in spices, often with pomegranate seed powder and chilli sauce, then fried until crisp and served with chips, salad and naan. Grilled versions are also common. For more on the fish itself, see our trout fishing in Swat guide.
Ask whether the trout is priced per kilo or per portion, ask for it to be weighed in front of you, and agree the total before it goes in the pan. Fresh fish is cooked to order, so expect a wait.
Chapli kebab, pulao and the rest
Chapli kebab (a flat spiced mince patty), Kabuli pulao, karahi and slow-cooked dum pukht dishes are the standard Swat menu, and you will find them at both tourist restaurants and the simplest dhabas. For a fuller list, see our guide to Swat's famous food, which covers dishes you will also find in Mingora; our restaurants in Mingora guide is useful before you head up the valley.
Where to eat in Kalam
Riverside restaurants in the bazaar
Most visitors eat at the restaurants on the river side of Kalam bazaar, where tables overlook the water. The bazaar is the centre for shopping, dining and arranging tours, with hotels, cafes, medical stores and general stores. It is the most convenient place for a trout lunch or dinner. Hotels with riverside dining rooms are common; New Honey Moon Hotel and Restaurant and Four Star Hotel appear in Tripadvisor listings for Kalam, and Pamir Camping Resort and Lemar Hotels & Resorts appear in a Swat directory as places with dining.
Take the river seriously when you sit beside it. A June 2025 flash flood on the Swat River killed members of a tourist family, so don't walk down to the water in heavy rain and move away if it rises.
Hotel dining rooms
If you stay in Kalam, you will probably eat at least one meal at your hotel. Ask what is on the menu that day and whether prices are fixed, especially for trout. Hotel food is usually the safest bet for visitors with children or sensitive stomachs. See hotels in Kalam.
Dhabas at Ushu forest and Matiltan
On the road beyond Kalam you will find small dhabas serving tea, rice, daal, kebabs and fried fish. Tripadvisor notes a large number of dhabas around the Ushu forest area. They are basic, and hours depend on the season; pick one that is busy. See Ushu forest and Matiltan valley.
Food on the way up
Madyan and Bahrain have riverside restaurants and tea stops that are worth using before you reach Kalam; see our Mingora to Kalam guide. Mingora is also the last place to rely on for cash.
Tips for eating well in Kalam
- Agree prices first. For trout, per-kilo prices and portion sizes are where most misunderstandings happen.
- Eat where it is busy, and where the kitchen is turning over fish.
- Carry cash in small notes. Card machines and mobile signal are patchy.
- Check opening hours. In winter, and in the shoulder months, some places shut early or for the season. See Kalam in winter.
- Bring water and snacks for jeep days, since the dhabas on the way are basic.
- Take your rubbish back from picnic spots.
Is it worth planning meals?
Not much. Kalam is not a food destination, and the menu varies little. A trout dinner by the river and a few cups of tea at the lake are what most people remember. If you are a fussy eater or travelling with young children, bring familiar snacks and rely on your hotel for main meals. For where food fits into a trip, see the Kalam 2-day itinerary and the wider Swat Valley guide.
Is Kalam safe to visit?
The UK government advises against all travel to Swat; overseas visitors should check their own government's advice, since travelling against it can void insurance. Pakistani visitors still travel to Kalam each season, but a suicide bomber killed 17 at the Kabal police station in Swat on 2 August 2026. Check local news and police advice before you travel.
