Kalam weather by month follows its height of about 2,000 metres: warm days and cool nights from June to September, with average highs around 24 to 26°C and lows of 9 to 14°C; cold, often wet springs; and winters when January averages 7°C by day and −8°C at night. Nights fall below freezing on average from November to March, snow falls mostly from December to February, and the wettest months are March and April rather than the monsoon.

Averages smooth out the extremes. A single week can be much colder or wetter than the table suggests, and the weather in Kalam can differ sharply from Mingora, 1,000 metres lower. For a trip in the next few days, check the forecast on the Pakistan Meteorological Department website and ask your hotel what the road is like.
Spring: March to May
Spring in Kalam comes late and arrives wet. March and April are the two wettest months of the year, with 88 and 93 mm on average, and in March some of that still falls as snow. Average lows stay below freezing through March, so the town thaws by day and refreezes by night, which makes for muddy lanes and icy mornings.
By April the days are mild, around 18°C, and the valley floor starts to turn green, but nights average only 4°C and the high tracks above Kalam are still under snow. May is the turning point: highs in the low 20s, lows around 8°C, and rain less often.
If you come in spring, bring a waterproof jacket as well as warm layers, and expect some days to be grey and cold.
Summer: June to August
June is the most reliable month for weather: warm, with average highs of 26°C, and the driest month of the summer with 32 mm of rain. Nights are cool at around 11°C.
July and August are the warmest months at night, with lows of 13 to 14°C, and they bring the monsoon: 66 mm on average in each. That is far less rain than the plains get in the same months, and what matters more than the rain in town is what it does elsewhere:
- Landslides on the road between Bahrain and Kalam and on the jeep tracks.
- Rivers that rise fast. Rain higher up can swell the Swat river even on a sunny afternoon in Kalam. In June 2025 a flash flood swept away tourists picnicking on the riverbank near Mingora, and in June 2026 the authorities issued a glacial lake outburst flood alert for northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as heat sped up snow and glacier melt.
Even in July, bring a fleece or light jacket for the evenings, and more for Mahodand.
Autumn: September to November
September is the calm after the monsoon: highs around 24°C, lows around 9°C, and much less rain. It is the most comfortable month for walking.
October is crisp and mostly dry, with days around 20°C and nights around 4°C. Frost is possible late in the month, and snow can arrive early: in 2025 the first snowfall of the season reached Kalam in the first week of October. November is the driest month of the year, with only 15 mm on average, but the average low is already below freezing. Days are bright and cold, around 14°C, and the valley is quiet.
Winter: December to February
Winter in Kalam is cold and snowy. Average lows are −5°C in December, −8°C in January and −6°C in February, and the days rarely get much above 10°C.
Snow usually starts in December, but not always on time. In the 2025–26 winter a long dry spell ended with fresh snow on 22 December, and the heaviest fall came in late January, when Kalam recorded about 30 inches of snow around 24 January 2026. Roads in upper Swat closed and power supply was disrupted in parts of the district while it was cleared.

When do nights drop below freezing in Kalam?
On average, from November to March. The coldest nights come in January, averaging −8°C in town and colder in the side valleys.
At the edges of the season, the averages hide frosts. October and April both have average lows of about 4°C, which means some nights in each fall below zero, particularly in clear, still weather. If you are coming at either end of the year:
- Check what heating your room has and whether it works when the power is off.
- Never sleep with a gas heater running in a closed room.
- Expect ice on shaded stretches of road first thing in the morning.
How much colder is it higher up?
Much of what people come to Kalam for is higher than the town. As a rule of thumb, air cools by about 6°C for every 1,000 metres you climb.
- Ushu and Matiltan, a short way up the valley from Kalam, are slightly colder and hold snow longer.
- Mahodand Lake, at 2,865 metres, is about 865 metres above Kalam, so expect it to be roughly 5°C colder than town, and colder still in the wind or once the sun goes behind the ridge.

What to pack for each season
- June to September: light layers for the day, a fleece or warm jacket for evenings, a rain jacket in July and August, sunscreen and a hat.
- April, May and October: a warm jacket, a hat and gloves for the evenings, waterproofs in April, and shoes that can cope with mud.
- November to March: a proper winter coat, thermal layers, gloves, a woollen hat, waterproof boots with good grip, and a torch for power cuts.

Is it safe to visit Kalam?
Weather aside, check the security picture before travelling. Pakistani tourists continue to visit Kalam, but Swat's security worsened in 2026: residents reported armed men in the mountains of Matta and Charbagh in July, and on 2 August a suicide bombing at the Kabal police station near Mingora killed 17 people during a peace rally.
