Kalam in winter is reachable, but on the snow's terms. The road from Mingora stays open on most days, yet a heavy fall can close the stretch above Bahrain for a day or two until it is cleared, as happened in February 2024. Snow is most reliable from late December to February, when the town sits under a thick cover, nights average −5 to −8°C, and Ushu and Matiltan are reachable only by jeep after the road has been cleared. Go with a four-by-four or snow chains, spare days, and a hotel you have confirmed is open and heated.

Is the road to Kalam open in winter?
Usually, yes. Outside the biggest storms, traffic keeps moving on the N-95. The problems come after heavy snowfall, and mostly on the last stretch, between Bahrain and Kalam.
Recent winters show the pattern:
- February 2024: heavy snow blocked the Kalam–Bahrain road for two days, leaving hundreds of tourists and residents unable to travel. Locals complained that clearing was slow.
- January 2026: Kalam recorded about 30 inches of snow in one spell around 24 January. Roads in upper Swat were closed and power supply was disrupted while the district administration cleared them.
- Late December 2025: fresh snow on 22 December, after a long dry spell, brought crowds of visitors to Kalam and Malam Jabba.
The Upper Swat Development Authority and the district administration clear the road with heavy machinery, but in a big storm it can take a day or more. That is why every winter trip to Kalam needs a spare day built in.

Snow at Ushu and Matiltan
Beyond the town, the road up the Ushu valley towards Matiltan leads into the snow-covered deodar forest. Whether you can get there depends on how much has fallen and whether the road has been opened.
- After a heavy fall, the road beyond Kalam can stay closed until it has been cleared, so ask in Kalam each morning.
- Once it is cleared, jeeps from Kalam run up to Ushu and on towards Matiltan. Your own car is best left in town.
- Mahodand Lake is out of reach in winter; the jeep track is buried from late autumn to spring.
When conditions allow, winter events are held up here. In late December 2025 a five-day snow festival at Matiltan, backed by the Upper Swat Development Authority, the tourism department and Green Tourism, drew crowds for snow kabaddi and tug-of-war. In January 2025 the provincial Culture and Tourism Authority and the Frontier 4x4 Club ran a snow jeep rally in Kalam. Neither is a fixed annual date, so check the tourism authority's announcements closer to the time.
What you can do in the snow is simple: walk in the forest, build snowmen, sledge on gentle slopes, and sit by a fire. Locals sometimes offer horse rides and sledge rides; agree the price first. Our guide to places to visit in Kalam covers the sights beneath the snow.
Where to stay in Kalam in winter
Winter tourism in Swat has grown in recent years, but Kalam's hotel trade grew up around the summer, and not every hotel is equipped for severe winter weather. Some may close, or leave rooms unheated, once the crowds have gone.
That changes how you book:
- Phone the hotel directly a few days before you go, and confirm it is open, heated and expecting you. Don't rely on an online booking alone.
- Ask exactly what heating the room has: a wood stove, a gas heater, an electric heater, or electric blankets. Ask whether it is included in the rate.
- Ask what happens in a power cut. Heavy snow can bring the power down, as it did in January 2026. An electric heater and geyser are no use without backup.
- Ask about hot water, and when it is available.
- Prefer a hotel in or near the bazaar in deep winter. Hotels further out along the Ushu road are harder to reach after heavy snow, and you will not want to walk an unlit road in the cold.

How to keep warm at night
January nights in Kalam average −8°C, and colder after clear days. A few things make the difference:
- Bring your own warm layers for sleeping: thermal tops and bottoms, woollen socks and a hat.
- Ask for extra quilts as soon as you arrive, before the hotel runs out.
- Use gas heaters safely. Never sleep with a gas heater burning in a closed room. Keep a window slightly open while it runs, switch it off before you sleep, and never burn charcoal indoors. Carbon monoxide gives no warning.
- Keep phones and power banks charged whenever the power is on.
Getting there: the car, the kit and the timing
The vehicle. After fresh snow, the road above Bahrain is safe only in a four-by-four, or with snow chains and a driver who has fitted them before. Practise fitting chains at home rather than at the roadside at dusk. Check tyres, brakes, wipers, battery and antifreeze before you leave.
What to carry in the car: warm clothes, blankets, food and water for a long delay, a torch, a shovel if you have one, and a full tank. Fill up in Mingora.
The timing. Leave Mingora early in the morning so you reach Kalam by early afternoon, well before dark, when the road refreezes. Check the Pakistan Meteorological Department forecast before leaving, and if heavy snow is due, wait a day in Mingora or Madyan rather than racing it.
A sensible winter plan from Islamabad looks like this:
- Day 1: Islamabad to Mingora or Madyan.
- Day 2: up to Kalam in the morning; an afternoon in the snow around town.
- Day 3: Ushu by jeep if the road is open, or a quiet day in Kalam if not.
- Day 4: down to Mingora, or all the way home if the roads are clear.
- Day 5: spare, for a closed road.
Is it safe to visit Kalam in winter?
Security. Pakistani visitors continue to go to Kalam, and winter tourism there is growing, but Swat's security worsened in 2026. In July residents reported armed men in the mountains of Matta and Charbagh, and on 2 August a suicide bomber attacked the Kabal police station near Mingora during a peace rally, killing 17 people. Check local news and current police advice before leaving, travel in daylight and carry your CNIC. Overseas visitors should know that the UK government advises against all travel to Swat and that going against such advice can void travel insurance.
Winter hazards. The same January 2026 storm that dropped 30 inches on Kalam brought an avalanche that killed nine people in Chitral, and the national disaster authority issued avalanche alerts across the north. Stay off steep, loaded slopes after heavy snow, don't park under snow-laden banks, and turn back if the road ahead looks unsafe.
Kalam or Malam Jabba for snow?
Choose Malam Jabba if this is your first snow trip, you have young children or older parents, or you have only two or three days. It is about 40 km from Mingora on a paved mountain road, has a ski slope and chairlift, and a hotel built for winter. Our Malam Jabba guide covers what runs in winter.
Choose Kalam if you want deep snow and quiet, have a four-by-four, and can keep two spare days. The trade-off is a harder road, colder rooms and a real chance of being snowed in for a day.
