Choose Malam Jabba if you have one day or one night, want chairlift and zipline activities, or are going in winter for snow. Choose Kalam if you have at least two nights, want river, forest and lake scenery, and are travelling between June and September. The two are in different directions from Mingora and suit different kinds of trip: Malam Jabba is an activity stop that is close to the main road, while Kalam is a valley base for jeep trips and walking.

This comparison covers distance, time, cost, activities, season and who each suits. For the places themselves, we have separate guides to Kalam and Malam Jabba.

How far apart are they, and how do you combine them?

Malam Jabba is about 40 to 45 km from Mingora; guides quote one to one and a half hours. Kalam is about 96 km, usually three to four hours. They lie in different directions from the Mingora area, so one does not take you towards the other.

If you have three days, Malam Jabba on arrival day and Kalam for the next two nights works well. Our Mingora to Kalam guide covers the longer drive, and Mingora to Malam Jabba covers the shorter one.

Cost compared

Costs are driven by what you do, not just where you go.

Malam Jabba charges for access and activities. A 2026 guide lists resort entry at about PKR 2,100, the chairlift at PKR 1,500 to 2,900 depending on ticket type, and the zipline at PKR 3,500 to 4,500. Treat those as indicative: rates change, vary by day and by ticket bundle, and different sites quote different figures. Our Malam Jabba ticket price guide explains the pricing in more detail. Rooms there are limited, and the main on-site hotel is at the top of the price range.

Kalam costs more in transport than in entry fees. The town itself is free, but the best sights are reached by local jeep on rough tracks, and jeep fares are the main variable. Hotels range from basic guesthouses to larger riverside hotels. See our Kalam jeep fare guide and Kalam trip cost guide for how to budget.

For a short trip, Malam Jabba is usually cheaper overall because you spend less on fuel and on nights away. For a longer trip, Kalam gives you more days of scenery per rupee spent, as long as you share jeeps and keep activities simple.

What you actually do there

Malam Jabba

  • Ride the chairlift to the hilltop, in any season (a chairlift is reported to run year-round)
  • Try the zipline or other activity rides
  • Ski or sledge if there is snow
  • Walk or camp on the hills in summer

You can do most of this in half a day, which is why it works as a day trip. See Malam Jabba skiing for the winter side.

Kalam

  • Jeep trips to Mahodand Lake, Ushu forest and Matiltan
  • Walks along the river and to meadows such as Desan
  • Fishing and trout dinners
  • Photography in the forests and at the confluence of the Ushu and Gabral rivers that forms the Swat River

Kalam rewards slow days. You can walk for hours without spending anything, but the headline places are an hour or more away by jeep. See our Mahodand Lake guide and Kalam 2-day itinerary.

Season: when each works best

Malam Jabba has the broader season. Snow usually arrives around late December and the main ski season runs roughly to February; January is described as the most reliable month, but snowfall varies each year. In May to September the hills are green and the chairlift and zipline operate.

Kalam is mainly a summer destination. June to September is when roads are open, meadows are green and the lake tracks are passable. In winter Kalam can be snowbound and the upper road may close; see Kalam in winter and best time to visit Kalam.

If you want snow, Malam Jabba is the realistic choice. If you want the lakes, it is Kalam in summer.

Which is better for whom?

  • Families with small children or elderly parents: Malam Jabba is shorter and easier. Kalam's long drive and rough jeep tracks tire people out.
  • Couples on a weekend: Kalam, if you can spare two nights; the setting is quieter than Malam Jabba's activity area.
  • Groups of friends: Both. Malam Jabba for activities and Kalam for the scenery, if time allows.
  • First-time visitors on a budget: Malam Jabba as a day trip from Mingora or Madyan, then Kalam if time and money allow.
  • Photographers and walkers: Kalam.
  • Winter travellers: Malam Jabba.

Is it safe to visit Swat?

The UK government advises against all travel to Swat, and overseas visitors should check their own government's advice because travelling against it can void insurance. Pakistani visitors still travel to both places, and Swat tourism has been actively promoted. On 2 August 2026 a suicide bomber attacked the Kabal police station in Swat during a peace rally, killing 17. Check local news and police advice the day before, and avoid night travel.

In May 2026 tourists in private vehicles heading for Mahodand Lake were allegedly stopped by local people who wanted them to hire local jeeps; officials said visitors may use their own transport. Confirm transport arrangements with your hotel in advance. Our Swat safety guide gives more.

Can you do both in one trip?

Yes, and for most people that is the best answer. The wider Swat Valley guide shows how Mingora, Madyan, Malam Jabba and Kalam fit along one route, and our Swat and Kalam 5-day itinerary puts them in order.
