Malam Jabba in winter means snow from roughly late December to February, with January the most reliable month. When enough has fallen, the resort at about 2,800 metres opens its ski runs, and families come for sledging, snowball fights and the chairlift over white slopes. The catch is the last 35 km or so of road, a steep mountain climb from Manglor that needs chains or a four-by-four after fresh snow.

When is there snow at Malam Jabba?
The Pearl-Continental hotel at the resort gives the ski season as December to February, and that is a fair guide. The detail matters more than the range:
- December is hit or miss. Some years the first proper snow comes before Christmas; some years the slopes are still brown at New Year.
- January is the month to aim for. It usually has the deepest cover and the coldest, most settled snow.
- February often still has good snow, particularly in the first half, but warm spells start to soften it.
- March is the melt. Late falls happen, but by then the slopes are usually patchy and muddy.
Winter snowfall in Swat swings a lot from year to year. A single storm can dump a great deal: after the heavy falls of late January 2026, Dawn reported 58 inches of snow at Malam Jabba. Equally, long dry spells in mid-winter are common. Don't book around a date and hope; watch the forecasts in the week before and call your hotel.
What is open in winter
The resort runs all year, so the question in winter is what the snow adds rather than what closes. With good cover:

- Sledging and tubing on the gentler slopes, which is what most families actually spend their day doing.
- The chairlift, which is at its best on a clear day after snow.
- The zipline and other rides, when the weather allows. High wind or heavy snow can stop them.

The road in snow
Most winter trips to Malam Jabba that go wrong go wrong on the road, not on the slopes. The climb from Manglor is paved, but it is steep, narrow in places and full of bends, and after fresh snow it can be icy for days in the shaded stretches.
It can also close outright. In January 2022, days after the Murree tragedy, heavy snow blocked the roads to both Malam Jabba and Kalam and left tourists stranded until the roads were cleared. That is the extreme case, but it is the one to plan against.
What we advise:
- Check before you leave Mingora. Call your hotel or the resort and ask whether the road is open and what cars are managing it, and follow any advisories from the police or district administration.
- Carry chains, and practise fitting them at home. Fitting chains for the first time at the roadside, in the cold and in the dark, is miserable. A four-by-four with good tyres is better still.
- Drive the climb in daylight. Aim to be going up by late morning and coming down by mid-afternoon. It is dark by about half past five in January, and ice sets hard as soon as the sun goes.
- Come down in low gear. Let the engine hold the car and keep your foot off the brake on the bends. Most cars that slide do so on the way down.
- Keep food, water and warm clothes in the car, a full tank of fuel, and a charged power bank, in case you are held up for hours.
- Turn back if the road looks wrong. A queue of cars stuck on a slope ahead of you is a sign to wait in Mingora, not to join it.

How busy does it get?
After a good snowfall, Malam Jabba fills up fast. Much of Peshawar, Islamabad and Punjab sees the same forecast you do, and on the first sunny weekend after a storm the road up from Manglor can back up for long stretches. In early January 2026, the Nation reported that hotel rooms around Malam Jabba were in short supply because of the rush of visitors.
To get the snow without the worst of the crowd:
- Go on a weekday if you possibly can. Monday to Thursday is far calmer.
- Arrive early. Being on the slope by 10 am puts you ahead of the day-trippers from Mingora.
- Book rooms well ahead for New Year and the winter school holidays, and expect higher rates.
- Avoid Sunday afternoon for the drive down, when everyone leaves at once.
What to wear
At 2,800 metres, a sunny winter day can feel pleasant in the sun and bitter in the shade or wind, and the nights are well below freezing. Dress in layers you can take off:
- A waterproof outer jacket and, if you have them, waterproof trousers. Jeans soak through within an hour in the snow.
- A warm middle layer, such as a fleece or down jacket, and thermals underneath
- Waterproof boots with a good grip. Trainers are the most common mistake, and they are slippery and wet within minutes.
- Gloves, ideally waterproof, plus a spare pair for children
- A warm hat that covers the ears
- Sunglasses and sunscreen, because sun on snow burns quickly even when the air is cold
- A complete change of clothes for each child, left in the car
Day trip or overnight?
From Mingora, Malam Jabba is an easy day trip in winter, provided the road is clear. You go up in the late morning, spend three or four hours in the snow and come down before dark.
From Islamabad it is not. Five to six hours each way in good conditions, more in snow, leaves almost no time at the top and puts you on the mountain road in the dark. Is it safe to visit Swat this winter?
Pakistani families still visit Malam Jabba in large numbers, and the resort is open. But the security picture in Swat has worsened. On 2 August 2026 a suicide bomber attacked the Kabal police station in Swat during a peace rally, killing 17 people. In September 2024 a roadside bomb on the Malam Jabba road hit the police escort of a convoy of foreign diplomats, killing a policeman; the diplomats were unhurt.
Check local news and current police advice before you set out, and follow any instructions at checkpoints. Overseas visitors should know that the UK government, among others, advises against all travel to Swat, and going against that advice can void travel insurance.
Is Malam Jabba worth it in winter?
For a family that wants to see and play in real snow, within a day's drive of Islamabad and with a hotel at the top, yes. Nowhere else in the country gives you skiing, sledging and a warm room so close together.
It suits people who can be flexible with dates and are comfortable driving in snow, or willing to hire someone who is. It suits less well anyone tied to one fixed weekend, since a dry spell or a blocked road can undo the plan, or anyone expecting a proper ski holiday.
