Where to Stay in Malam Jabba: Resort and Budget Options

There are few hotels at Malam Jabba itself. The Pearl-Continental sits on the resort's slope and is by far the most comfortable and most expensive choice; Samsons Inn, about 3 km below, is the resort's own budget option; and a handful of small hotels have opened along the road up. Most visitors on a tighter budget stay 45 km away at Fizagat or Mingora, where rooms are cheaper and choice far wider, and drive up for the day.

Which you choose comes down to three things: how much you want to wake up on the mountain, how far you are willing to drive on a winter road, and how warm you need your room to be. This guide compares the options on each.

Staying at the resort: the Pearl-Continental

The Pearl-Continental Malam Jabba is the large hotel on the resort itself, at about 2,800 metres. The resort's original hotel was burned by militants in 2008; the Pearl-Continental opened in 2020 with 76 rooms.

What you get:

• Location. The ski slope, chairlift and rides are a short walk away, and the zipline ends at the hotel. In winter, that means no morning drive on an icy road.
• A range of rooms. Deluxe and executive rooms of about 30 square metres, family rooms of about 43 square metres, some with interconnecting doors, and several suites with balconies. Some rooms face the ski slope and valley, others the mountain behind, so ask for the view you want when you book.
• Facilities to fill a bad-weather day. The hotel lists a temperature-controlled pool, a health club, an in-house cinema and a children's play area, which matter more than they sound when cloud or snow shuts the rides.
• Food. Several restaurants, including an all-day dining room, a café and a Chinese restaurant, which is useful when there is little else nearby in winter.

It is priced as a five-star hotel and is easily the most expensive stay in the area. Rates are highest at New Year, on winter weekends after snow and over Eid and the summer holidays, and rooms at those times go early. In January 2026 local press reported hotels around Malam Jabba fully booked after snowfall.

For a family on a winter trip, especially with small children or older parents, the Pearl-Continental removes most of what can go wrong: the drive in the dark, a cold room, a long wait for food. That is what you are paying for.

Samsons Inn: the budget option near the slope

Samsons Inn is a small hotel about 3 km below the resort, listed by the resort as its budget-friendly option. It has about a dozen rooms, far simpler than the Pearl-Continental, and booking listings mention heaters and hot water.

It suits couples and small groups who want to be close to the slopes without five-star prices. In winter, remember that those 3 km are on the same mountain road, and after fresh snow even a short drive needs care. Ask before booking how the rooms are heated and whether there is backup power.

Small hotels on the Malam Jabba road

In recent years several small hotels and guesthouses have opened along the road between Manglor and the resort, and they appear on the usual booking sites. Quality varies widely, and some are new enough to have few reviews.

A few things to check before you book:

• Where exactly it is. "Malam Jabba" in a listing can mean anywhere on a 35 km road. Look at the map: a hotel halfway down is closer to Manglor than to the slope.
• Recent reviews, especially from winter, which will tell you about heating and hot water.
• The name. Some small places on booking sites carry the names of big international hotel brands. A famous name in a listing title does not mean the brand runs it.

Staying down the valley: Fizagat and Mingora

Mingora, the main town of Swat, is about 45 km from the resort, and Fizagat is its riverside strip on the Kalam road at the northern edge of town, which is also the road you take towards Malam Jabba. Between them they have the widest choice of hotels in Swat, from simple guesthouses to established mid-range hotels such as Rock City Resort and Hotel One on the Fizagat stretch.

Staying here makes sense if:

• You are on a budget. Rooms are much cheaper than at the resort.
• Malam Jabba is one stop on a longer Swat trip. Mingora is the natural base for the Buddhist sites, the museum and the road north to Madyan and Kalam.
• You are visiting in summer, when the road up is dry and an hour or so each way is easy.

The trade-off is the drive: 1 to 1.5 hours each way in good conditions, on a steep mountain road. In winter, that is a real cost. After snow, the climb can take much longer, the road can be icy on the way down, and you will want to be off the mountain before dark, which cuts your day short. Heating, power and views: what to ask in winter

At 2,800 metres, winter nights are well below freezing, and a room that is merely chilly in October can be miserable in January. Whichever hotel you choose, ask before you pay:

1. How is the room heated? Central heating, gas heaters and electric heaters all behave differently, and an electric heater is useless during a power cut.
2. Is there a generator or other backup power? Heavy snow can bring down power lines in the mountains, sometimes for a day or more.
3. When is there hot water? Some smaller hotels run the geyser only at set hours.
4. Are extra blankets or quilts available?
5. Which way does the room face? A room facing the slope or the valley is worth asking for; a room facing the hillside behind is darker and colder.

In summer, none of this matters much. The resort's height keeps it cool when the plains are in the forties, and the views are at their clearest in September and October.

Which should you choose?

• A winter trip for snow or skiing: stay at the resort if the budget allows. It turns Malam Jabba from a risky day trip into an easy stay, and gives you a second morning on the slope. Our guide to Malam Jabba in winter covers the snow months and the road.

• A summer visit as part of a Swat trip: stay in Fizagat or Mingora and drive up for half a day.

Is it safe to stay in Swat now?

Hotels at Malam Jabba and in Mingora are open, and Pakistani visitors continue to come. But the security situation in Swat has worsened: on 2 August 2026 a suicide bomber attacked the Kabal police station during a peace rally, killing 17 people, and in September 2024 a roadside bomb on the Malam Jabba road killed a policeman escorting a convoy of foreign diplomats. Check local news and police advice before you travel. Overseas visitors should know that the UK government advises against all travel to Swat, and that this can void travel insurance.
