Kalam Trip Cost: Budget for Hotels, Jeeps and Food

The cost of a Kalam trip comes down to three things: getting there, the jeep to Mahodand Lake, and your hotel. In 2026 a jeep from Kalam to Mahodand and back costs roughly PKR 7,000 to 12,000 for the vehicle, depending on the month, and a basic room roughly PKR 3,000 to 6,500 a night outside the peak season. Three-day group tours to Swat and Kalam from Lahore and Islamabad are commonly advertised at around PKR 14,500 to 19,500 per person.

The figures here are rough 2026 asking rates gathered from several sources, not quotes. Prices in Kalam change with the season, jump at Eid and in August, and vary from one hotel or driver to the next, so use them to plan and confirm on the spot.

What decides the cost of a Kalam trip?

Four choices set the budget more than anything else:

• How you get there. Your own car, a hired car with a driver, public transport or a group tour. For a family, this is usually the biggest cost.
• When you go. Room rates and jeep fares are highest at Eid, in July and August and on long weekends. A weekday in June or September is cheaper and far calmer.
• How many share the jeep. Jeeps are hired by the vehicle. Five people pay a fifth each; a couple pays half each.
• Which hotel. The same valley can cost PKR 3,000 or PKR 25,000 a night.

Getting to Kalam

Your own car

Kalam is about 325 km from Islamabad each way. With the drive back and some local running, budget for 650 to 700 km. A car that manages 12 km to the litre overall will use roughly 55 to 60 litres; multiply by the pump price on the day. The slow, broken road above Bahrain uses more fuel than the motorway, so round up.

A hired car with a driver

Cars with drivers from Islamabad are priced by the day, and the rate depends heavily on the vehicle. Fuel, tolls, and the driver's food and room are often added on top. Ask for one figure that covers everything for the whole trip, and check whether the driver will take the car on the Ushu road or only to Kalam. For a group of four or five it costs more than driving yourself, and buys a driver who knows the road and nobody driving home tired.

Public transport

The cheapest way for one or two people: a coach to Mingora, then a local van up the valley to Kalam. Fares change often, so ask at the terminal. It takes most of a day and leaves you hiring jeeps in Kalam like everyone else.

A group tour

For solo travellers and couples, a group tour is often the cheapest way to see Kalam. Three-day departures from Lahore and Islamabad are advertised at around PKR 14,500 to 19,500 per person in 2026, often leaving Lahore at night and picking up in Islamabad in the early hours. Most include transport, shared rooms and some meals.

Read the exclusions carefully. Many tours do not include the jeep to Mahodand or Ushu, the chairlift at Malam Jabba, lunches, or a private room. Once you add those, the gap between a cheap and a less cheap tour often narrows.

How much are jeeps in Kalam?

Jeeps wait in the bazaar and are hired for the vehicle, usually for a return trip with waiting time. Rough 2026 fares:

• Mahodand Lake and back: about PKR 7,000 to 12,000, lower in June and September and higher in July, August and at Eid. It is a full morning or more, around two hours each way on the track.
• A shared seat to Mahodand: about PKR 1,000 to 1,500, when drivers are filling a jeep seat by seat. Good value for one or two people, less so for a family.
• Ushu Forest and back: about PKR 5,000 to 6,000. In dry weather many people drive themselves this far instead.
• Desan Meadows, Utror and Gabral: priced by the driver according to how far you go and how long he waits. Ask two or three drivers.

Before you set off, agree the total fare, every stop, and the waiting time at each. Ask whether Ushu and Matiltan are included on the Mahodand run, since they are on the way. Our guide to places to visit in Kalam has the distances and jeep times.

At Mahodand itself, boat rides, horse rides and food are paid separately, in cash, and are priced at the lakeside.

Hotels, and what the season does to prices

Kalam has a lot of hotels, from basic rooms above bazaar shops to resorts on the slopes above the town. In 2026:

• Basic rooms cost roughly PKR 3,000 to 6,500 a night outside the peak season, and more in summer.
• Better hotels, with reliable hot water and a view, are listed at roughly PKR 9,000 to 18,000 a night in summer.
• The top places in Kalam cost more than that, particularly for family rooms.

Food and the small costs

Kalam's restaurants serve karahi, rice, daal and trout. Trout is usually sold by the kilo, so ask the price per kilo before the fish is weighed and cooked. Hotel food is usually more expensive than the bazaar.

Other costs to budget for:

• Tea and snacks at Mahodand, which usually cost more than in town.
• Boats and horses at the lake, if you want them.
• Heating. In spring, autumn and winter, check whether the heater is included in the room rate.
• A tip for the jeep driver if he has waited patiently.
• A spare night. A landslide or snow can keep you a day longer, and you will pay for the room either way.

Take cash from Mingora for the whole trip. In Kalam, jeep drivers and lakeside stalls want cash, and many hotels prefer it.

Two sample budgets

For a group of four driving from Islamabad, two nights in Kalam, using 2026 rates. Fuel, tolls and food depend too much on your car and your appetite to put a number on, so they are left as separate lines.

On the budget plan, rooms and the jeep come to roughly PKR 5,000 to 9,500 per person before fuel and food. On the comfort plan, the same items come to roughly PKR 12,000 to 22,500 each, before car hire and meals. At Eid, both columns go up.

How to spend less in Kalam

1. Avoid Eid and August. The same room and the same jeep cost less on a weekday in June or September.
2. Fill the jeep. Travel as five, or share with another small group from your hotel.
3. Drive to Ushu yourself in dry weather, and pay for a jeep only for Mahodand.
4. Stay in or near the bazaar rather than at a resort on the slopes if you are on a tight budget. The rooms are simpler, but food and jeeps are on your doorstep.
5. Eat in the bazaar, and ask the trout price before ordering.
6. Book directly with a hotel you have spoken to, and confirm what the rate includes.

Is Kalam good value?

For a group of four or five friends or a family with their own car, yes, outside Eid. Rooms are plentiful, the jeep is shared, and a day at Mahodand is one of the best days out in Swat. The biggest cost is the distance: two long days on the road for two days in the valley.

It is less good value for a couple travelling alone, who pay for the whole jeep, and poor value at Eid, when prices rise and the road and the lake track are jammed. If you only have a weekend, the time on the road is a cost too: lower Swat, with Mingora and Malam Jabba, is three hours or more closer each way.
