Kaghan Valley
Babusar Top Open or Closed? Opening Dates Explained
Babusar Top road update: when the pass opens and closes each year, why the dates move, and how to check today's road status before you set off.
Tour package · 3 days
The Kaghan Valley is the closest high valley to Islamabad, and this trip covers its three best-known sights in a long weekend. You drive up the Kunhar River to Naran on the first day, follow the N-15 past Lulusar Lake to Babusar Top on the second, and take a jeep to Lake Saif ul Malook early on the third before the drive home. It only works in summer: Babusar is shut by snow for more than half the year, and most of Naran closes with it.
The route
Good for: Families, Students and groups of friends, First trip north.
A private trip for your group. Dates, pace and hotels are set around you and confirmed in writing with your quote.
Travel note, October 2026: snow closed Babusar Top at Gittidas on 13 October and it was still shut four days later, with no reopening reported since; it normally stays closed until about June. Naran and Kaghan can still be reached, but most Naran hotels close for the season in November. We are taking requests for June 2027 onward.
Day 1
We take the Hazara Motorway to Mansehra, then the N-15 up the Kunhar River through Balakot, Kawai and Kaghan town to Naran, which is about 119 km beyond Mansehra. The motorway part is quick; the valley road is single-carriageway, slow behind trucks and busy on summer weekends and Eid. We stop for lunch on the way and reach Naran in the afternoon or early evening, in time for a walk through the bazaar.
Drive: About 7 to 8 hours with stops · Night: Naran
Day 2
A day on the upper N-15, about 65 km from Naran to the pass. The road climbs past Batakundi and Jalkhad to Lulusar Lake, where we stop, and then up the switchbacks to Babusar Top at 4,173 m. We stay at the top for a short while only, because of the altitude and the cold wind, and come back down to Naran for the night. If the pass is closed by snow or a landslide, we turn round at Lulusar or wherever the police have stopped traffic.
Drive: About 3 hours each way with stops · Night: Naran
Day 3
We go up to Saif ul Malook early, before the jeep queues and the day-trip crowds. The track from Naran is about 11 km, rough and steep, and only four-wheel-drive jeeps run on it; your car waits in Naran. There is time to walk along the shore at 3,224 m before the jeep brings you down. We leave Naran by late morning for the drive back down the valley, reaching Islamabad or Rawalpindi in the evening.
Drive: Jeep to the lake and back, then about 7 to 8 hours to Islamabad

What is included
What is not
Usually from about June until the first heavy snow in October or November. In 2025 the NHA cleared the road and reopened it in late May after a seven-month closure; in 2026 it was shut again until 6 June for clearing, and snow closed it at Gittidas on 13 October. Short closures for snow or landslides can happen even in August, so we check with Mansehra and Diamer police the evening before.
It is an 11 km unpaved track from Naran, with snow and glacier patches early in the season, and the Kaghan Development Authority clears it each spring. Only local four-wheel-drive jeeps go up. In late July 2026 a flash flood washed away part of it and tourists in about 200 jeeps had to be brought down; the road was closed for repairs. If it is shut, we tell you the evening before and you can start home earlier instead.
You sleep at Naran, about 2,400 m, and only stop at Babusar Top (4,173 m) for a short time before coming back down. Most people feel short of breath walking uphill there, and some get a headache that goes on the descent. It is cold and windy at the top even in July, so bring a warm layer. If anyone in the group has a heart or lung condition, ask a doctor first and tell us.
Naran is a summer town. Hotels and restaurants close from about November, electricity and services are cut back, and police posts beyond Kaghan town are removed; in December 2025 the district administration said visitors could go only as far as Kaghan. In April and May the town reopens but Babusar is still closed and Saif ul Malook may not be cleared, so we only run this trip from June.
The N-15 is a paved national highway, but it is narrow and steep above Naran, with long descents where brakes overheat, which is why we use experienced mountain drivers. Babusar and the Kaghan Valley are not on the UK government's list of areas to avoid. In heavy monsoon rain the Kunhar rises and side streams can block the road, so we keep the plan flexible and follow police advice.
There is mobile signal in Naran town and along much of the valley road, but it drops above Batakundi and on the jeep track. Draw cash before Naran, as cards are rarely accepted. Pack a warm jacket, a hat and good shoes even in July, because Babusar and the lakes are much colder than Naran, plus rain gear for the monsoon months.
