Shogran and Siri Paye in 2 days

Shogran is a small resort on a forested shelf above the Kunhar River at 2,362 m, and the Siri Paye meadows above it, at close to 3,000 m, lie below Makra Peak. Both are reached from Kiwai on the Naran road, about 200 km from Islamabad, by local jeep. This short trip spends one night in Shogran and takes you up to Siri Paye in the morning, so the drive home is done in daylight.

A private trip for your group. Dates, pace and hotels are set around you and confirmed in writing with your quote.

Travel note, October 2026: the season on Siri Paye is nearly over. Snow has started early in the Hazara hills this year, with the first fall in the Galiyat on 24 and 25 October, and once snow settles on the Siri Paye track it stays closed until about May. Through the winter we can still plan Shogran on its own for snow, with the jeep climb from Kiwai depending on the day's conditions.

  1. Day 1

    Islamabad to Shogran

We leave Islamabad early. The Hazara Motorway takes you past Abbottabad to Mansehra, and the N15 then follows the Kunhar River through Balakot to Kiwai, about 200 km and 4.5 to 5.5 hours with a breakfast stop. At Kiwai the car stays at the roadside and you change to a local jeep for the climb to Shogran, about 7 km of steep hairpins that the Balakot administration lists as a jeep route. After lunch there is time for a walk in the forest and the meadow around Shogran. It gets cold after dark at this height, even in summer.

Drive: About 200 km to Kiwai, 4.5 to 5.5 hours, then 7 km by jeep · Night: Shogran

  2. Day 2

Siri Paye and the drive home

After an early breakfast a jeep takes you about 6 km up a rough track, past Siri Lake, to the open meadows of Paye at close to 3,000 m, with Paye Lake (2,895 m) and Makra Peak above. You have a couple of hours to walk on the grass before riding back to Shogran, collecting your bags and taking the jeep down to Kiwai by early afternoon. The drive back to Islamabad takes 4.5 to 5.5 hours, so you are home in the evening. If rain has closed the Siri Paye track, we walk the Shogran forest paths instead.

Drive: About 6 km each way by jeep, then about 200 km home, 4.5 to 5.5 hours

Good to know before you book

Can our own car go up to Shogran?

In dry weather some private cars do manage the climb from Kiwai, but it is steep and narrow, with tight hairpins, and it turns slippery in rain and snow. The Balakot administration lists Kiwai to Shogran and Shogran to Siri Paye as jeep routes, and we use local jeeps for both. Your bags go up with you, and the car waits at Kiwai.

When is Siri Paye open?

The jeep track to Siri Paye is usually open from about May to October and is closed by snow in winter. Shogran itself can be reached for most of the year, but heavy snow can block the climb from Kiwai for days at a time. July and August bring monsoon rain, when landslides can close the Naran road or the jeep tracks for a few hours or longer. We check the track with Shogran the day before you travel.

Can we climb Makra Peak?

Not on a two-day trip. Makra is 3,885 m, and the climb from Paye takes about four hours on steep ground; there have been fatal accidents on it in bad weather, especially thick fog. With an extra night in Shogran we can arrange it for fit walkers with a local guide, in settled summer weather. It is not for children or for anyone uneasy on steep slopes.

Does it suit children and older parents?

Yes, with some care. Once you are on the meadows the walking is gentle, and you can do as much or as little as you like. The jeep rides are bumpy and the drops beside the track are steep, which some older passengers find uncomfortable. Siri Paye is close to 3,000 m, high enough for breathlessness on slopes, so anyone with a heart or lung condition should ask their doctor before booking.

How cold is it, and what should we pack?

Even in the peak months of June to August, Shogran ranges from about 3 °C at night to 20 °C in the day, and it is colder on the meadows. Bring a warm jacket, a hat, a rain jacket and shoes with grip for wet grass. The valley is usually under snow in winter. Carry cash, a small first-aid kit and any regular medicines with you.
