Fairy Meadows Jeep Track: Fares, Rules and Safety
The Fairy Meadows jeep track from Raikot Bridge to Tato: the 2025–2026 fare, how the drivers' union works, what the ride is like, and how safe it really is.
Tour package · 4 days
Fairy Meadows is a high pasture at about 3,300 m that looks straight at the Rakhiot face, the north side, of Nanga Parbat (8,126 m), the ninth-highest mountain in the world. No road reaches it: the last stretch is a 15 km jeep road from Raikot Bridge on the Karakoram Highway and then a walk of three to four hours. By road from Islamabad the trip needs six days or more, so this four-day version flies to Gilgit and back, which only works if the weather lets the small aircraft fly.
The route
Good for: Couples, Groups of friends, Fit families with older children, Short on leave.
A private trip for your group. Dates, pace and hotels are set around you and confirmed in writing with your quote.
Travel note, October 2026: the Fairy Meadows season is over for this year. Snow fell on Nanga Parbat and Babusar in mid-October, Babusar Top has been closed by snow since 13 October, and most cottages close for the winter. We are taking requests for June 2027 onward.
Day 1
We take you to Islamabad airport for the early PIA flight to Gilgit, about 1 hour 15 minutes. Our car meets you and drives about 80 km down the Karakoram Highway to Raikot Bridge, where you change to one of the local jeeps that alone may use the road to Tato. From Tato it is about 5 km on foot to the meadows, three to four hours uphill; horses can carry bags or riders for a fee. You arrive in the late afternoon.
Drive: Flight about 1 hour 15 minutes; then about 2 to 3 hours by road and 1.5 hours by jeep · Night: Fairy Meadows
Day 2
Mornings are usually the clearest time for the mountain, so it is worth being up early. Those who want to walk can follow the path further up the valley to the Beyal pastures at about 3,500 m, with a few huts and tea stalls, and on to the viewpoint above them, a long half day there and back. The base camp beyond is a much longer day and is not part of this plan. Everyone else can rest on the meadow.
Night: Fairy Meadows
Day 3
After breakfast you walk back down to Tato, which is quicker than the climb but hard on the knees, and the jeep takes you to Raikot Bridge. The car is waiting there for the drive back up the Karakoram Highway to Gilgit, where you stay the night close to the airport. If there is time, the evening is free for the Gilgit bazaar.
Drive: About 1.5 hours by jeep, then about 2 to 3 hours to Gilgit · Night: Gilgit
Day 4
We take you to Gilgit airport for the morning flight to Islamabad and meet you on arrival to drive you home. Gilgit flights operate only in clear weather, because the aircraft fly by sight through the mountains, and cancellations are common. If the flight does not go, the choice is the next day's flight or two days by road, so we recommend keeping a spare day after the trip.
Drive: Flight about 1 hour 15 minutes
The detail
What is included
What is not
It is a narrow gravel road about 15 km long with steep drops into the Tato Nala, and only local drivers may use it. On 1 June 2026 a tourist jeep went off the road into the nala and seven people died, six tourists and the driver (The Nation, PakWheels). We use the union jeeps, do not allow overloading, and if anyone is unhappy with a driver or vehicle we change it. The road also closes for landslides after heavy rain.
From Tato it is about 5 km and three to four hours uphill to the meadows, on a clear path with some steep sections and loose stones. Most reasonably active adults and older children manage it at a steady pace. Horses can be hired at Tato for bags or for riders. You sleep at about 3,300 m, so expect to be short of breath, drink plenty and take the first evening easily.
Yes, but it needs at least six days. In summer the route is over Babusar Top to Chilas, about two days each way with a night in Naran or Chilas. The other route, the Karakoram Highway through Besham and Dasu, is the year-round road; the UK government advises against all travel on the Mansehra to Chilas stretch, and overseas visitors should check their own advice because it can affect insurance.
PIA is the only airline on the route, with small ATR turboprops that need clear weather, and flights are often cancelled or delayed. On the way out we move you to the next day's flight and shorten the meadow stay. On the way back we rebook the next flight or, from June to September, drive you home over Babusar, which takes about two days. A spare day after the trip removes most of the worry.
Do not count on mobile signal at Fairy Meadows or on the walk up; coverage is weak and comes and goes. Electricity in the cottages is limited and can go off, so bring a power bank and a torch. Carry enough cash from Islamabad or Gilgit for horses, tea and tips, because you should not expect an ATM between Gilgit and the meadows.
Nights at 3,300 m are cold even in July, so bring a warm jacket, a hat, gloves and a layer to sleep in. Wear walking shoes with good grip, not trainers with smooth soles, and keep a small daypack for the walk with water, snacks, sunscreen and sunglasses. A rain jacket is useful in July and August.
