Kumrat Valley in 4 days

Kumrat is the upper Panjkora valley in Upper Dir: a long, quiet valley of deodar forest, river meadows and waterfalls that is reached only by jeep beyond Thal. It takes most of a day to get there from Islamabad, so this trip gives you two full days in the valley between the drives. The second day can be the Jahaz Banda hike for those who want it, or an easy day around Thal for those who don't.

A private trip for your group. Dates, pace and hotels are set around you and confirmed in writing with your quote.

Travel note, October 2026: late October is the end of the Kumrat season. Nights are below freezing, many of the forest tent camps are packed away or unstaffed from late September, and snow can close the jeep track beyond Thal at short notice; we do not plan the Jahaz Banda hike at this time of year. The UK advises against all travel to Upper and Lower Dir after militant attacks there this summer. We are taking requests for June 2027.

  1. Day 1

    Islamabad to Thal

We leave Islamabad before dawn and take the M-1 and the Swat Motorway (M-16) to Chakdara. From there the N-45 runs north through Timergara into Upper Dir, and a narrower valley road follows the Panjkora up through Sheringal to Thal. The motorway part is quick; the mountain roads after Chakdara are slow and winding, and more so after rain. We reach Thal in the evening and stay there for all three nights, so you only unpack once.

Drive: About 8 to 12 hours depending on the road beyond Dir, roughly 370 km · Night: Thal

  2. Day 2

Kumrat forest and Kala Chashma by jeep

Cars stop at Thal; from here the valley road is unpaved, rocky and crosses streams, so we change to a local four-wheel-drive jeep. The jeep runs up through the Kumrat forest, with stops at the river meadows and waterfalls, to Kala Chashma higher up the valley. Depending on how far in you go, the drive takes one to two hours each way, leaving plenty of time to walk and picnic. Back in Thal, there is time to see the old wooden mosque before dark.

Drive: About 1 to 2 hours each way by jeep · Night: Thal

  3. Day 3

Jahaz Banda hike (optional) or a free day

For fit walkers, a jeep leaves Thal at first light for the last jeep point near Jandrai or Taki Banda, from where a steep path climbs through pine forest to the Jahaz Banda meadows at about 3,100 m. Walking times vary widely: about 2 to 3 hours from Taki Banda and 4 to 5 hours from Jandrai, plus the walk down, so it is a full day. Everyone else can spend an easy day in the Kumrat forest or by the river at Thal.

Drive: About 30 minutes by jeep to Jandrai, longer to Taki Banda · Night: Thal

  4. Day 4

    Thal to Islamabad

We leave Thal early for the long drive back down the Panjkora valley, through Upper and Lower Dir to Chakdara and onto the Swat Motorway. Leaving early means the slow mountain roads are done in daylight and you are on the motorway by the afternoon. We drop you at home in Islamabad, Rawalpindi or Peshawar in the evening or at night, depending on the road.

Drive: About 8 to 12 hours, roughly 370 km

Good to know before you book

Is Upper Dir safe to visit?

Pakistani tourists visit Kumrat every summer, but Upper and Lower Dir have seen militant attacks in 2026: police fought militants in the Barikot Dubando area of Upper Dir on 12 and 13 August, and an attack on the deputy commissioner's residence and a PTDC facility at Panakot was repelled on 14 August (Dawn). The UK advises against all travel to Upper and Lower Dir. We check police advice before every departure and will postpone if it says so.

What are the roads like?

The motorway to Chakdara is fast. After that the N-45 through Dir is a two-lane mountain highway, and the road up the Panjkora to Thal is narrow, with landslide-prone stretches. Beyond Thal the track is unpaved and rocky, with stream crossings, so only four-wheel-drive jeeps go further. Monsoon floods can cut the route: in August 2024 the main road was washed away at Barikot and three bridges between Makrala and Thal were lost, and about 250 tourists had to be rescued.

How hard is the Jahaz Banda hike?

It is a steep climb of several hours to about 3,100 m, on a path through forest that is muddy after rain. Walking times reported by hikers range from about 2 hours from the highest jeep point to 5 hours or more from Jandrai, so confirm the drop-off with the jeep driver before you set off. It is optional and only for people who walk regularly; the rest of the group has a free day.

Where do we stay, and what are the facilities like?

Thal has a small number of hotels and guesthouses, and in summer there are tent camps by the river in the Kumrat forest. Rooms are simple, hot water and electricity can be unreliable, and food is mostly local meat, rice, daal and bread. Families who need more comfort should know that Kumrat is a basic place to stay; we tell you what we have booked before you pay.

Will my phone work, and should I bring cash?

Mobile signal is unreliable in the valley and usually absent in the forest and at Kala Chashma, so download offline maps and tell family when you will be out of reach. Bring enough cash from Islamabad or Peshawar for the whole trip, because you cannot count on cards or ATMs beyond Dir.

What should I pack?

Nights are cold even in July, so bring a warm jacket, a hat and a layer to sleep in. Good walking shoes matter on the wet riverbank paths and are essential for Jahaz Banda. Add a rain jacket for July and August, a torch for power cuts, sunscreen, any medicines you need and snacks for the long drive days.
