Choose Hunza if you want established hotels, forts, viewpoints and the Karakoram Highway scenery, and Ghizer if you want quiet lakes, simple stays and fewer visitors, and don't mind long days on the road. Both start from Gilgit and go in opposite directions: Hunza north-east along the Karakoram Highway, Ghizer west along the Gilgit-Chitral road. Most travellers have time for one on a first trip.

How far is each from Gilgit?
Hunza is closer. Karimabad is roughly two to three hours from Gilgit, so a short trip can reach it. Ghizer is a longer proposition: Gahkuch, its district capital, is about 72 km from Gilgit, but the lakes that people come for lie much further. Phander is about 170 to 200 km from Gilgit depending on the source, four to six hours. Our Gilgit to Phander guide has the stages.
A rule of thumb: Hunza works in three days, and Ghizer needs at least four or five once you count the driving.
What is the scenery like?
Hunza is the classic Karakoram valley. Karimabad looks across to Rakaposhi at 7,788 metres, with Baltit Fort above town and Altit Fort a few kilometres away. The valley runs north past Attabad Lake and the Passu Cones to Khunjerab Pass. Much of the sightseeing is from the road or from viewpoints.
Ghizer is greener in its upper valley and quieter. The draw is water: Khalti Lake, Phander Lake, Handrap and Khukush lakes, plus Shandur Pass and the polo ground at its top. The district's highest peak, Koyo Zom, reaches 6,871 metres in the Hindu Kush, but most visitors never see it up close. Our lakes in Ghizer guide covers what each lake is like.
Facilities and comfort
This is the biggest difference. Hunza has hotels at every price, restaurants with menus, and plenty of guides and vehicles for hire. Ghizer has small guesthouses, a few former PTDC motels now under new management, and long gaps between towns. Power cuts, patchy mobile signal and cash-only payments are normal. Our hotels in Ghizer guide sets out what is available.
If anyone in your party needs reliable comforts, such as small children, older parents or people with health conditions, Hunza is the easier choice.
Culture and people
Karimabad's population is mostly Shia Ismaili Muslim and Burushaski is spoken locally, according to Wikipedia. Ghizer is a mix of valleys with their own languages, including Khowar in the west, which is the language of Chitral, and Shina, Wakhi and others elsewhere in the district. The languages and customs change as you move between Punial, Gupis, Yasin and Ishkoman. Our Hunza culture guide covers Hunza in more depth.
Cost
Travel guides in 2026 describe Ghizer as noticeably cheaper than Hunza for equivalent rooms and food, with budget rooms at about PKR 1,500 to 3,500 a night. The saving is smaller than people expect, because the longer drives add vehicle hire. Our Ghizer valley trip cost guide and Hunza trip cost guide give the budgets side by side.
Seasons
Hunza is open for most of the year and is best from April, with blossom, to October for autumn colour; see our best time to visit Hunza. Ghizer's upper valley, including Phander and Shandur, is a summer and autumn destination, with sources describing winter as isolating and the roads hard to use. Our best time to visit Ghizer guide covers it.
Road and safety
Both valleys are in Gilgit-Baltistan, which is not on the UK government's list of areas it advises against. The route in is the shared concern. If you drive from Islamabad, the UK advises against all travel on the Karakoram Highway between Mansehra and Chilas. Babusar (N15) avoids that stretch in summer. This applies to both valleys, and foreign-passport holders should check their own advice, as it can void travel insurance. Check local news and road status before setting out.
So which should you pick?
- Pick Hunza for a first trip, a short trip (three days or fewer), a family with children or older travellers, a honeymoon, or if forts, viewpoints and good restaurants matter. Our Gilgit, Hunza and Khunjerab tour is built around it.
- Pick Ghizer if you have four days or more, prefer lakes and quiet to sightseeing, are happy with simple rooms, and might camp. It is also a good second trip once you have done Hunza.
- Do both if you have a week and a half: Hunza first, then back through Gilgit and west. Our Ghizer valley itinerary shows how to plan the western half.
