A Ghizer valley trip costs roughly PKR 40,000 to 90,000 per person for a week for Pakistani travellers, once you include transport to Gilgit, according to a 2026 Ghizer travel guide, with the daily cost on the ground running from about PKR 3,800 on a tight budget to over PKR 20,000 for comfort. Rooms, food and local jeeps in the valley are cheap by northern standards. What moves the total is how you reach Gilgit and whether you hire a driver and vehicle for the whole trip.

These figures come from a handful of 2026 travel guides and operator listings, which do not always agree and rarely say how they were calculated. Treat them as planning ranges, and confirm every price by phone before you book.

How much does Ghizer cost per day?

One 2026 guide breaks the daily cost per person into three levels, and the other sources we found sit in the same bands.

  • Budget: about PKR 3,800 to 10,200 a day. This means shared transport, a simple guesthouse and local meals.
  • Mid-range: about PKR 7,500 to 23,500 a day. A private vehicle, better rooms and some paid activities.
  • Comfortable: from about PKR 21,000 a day.

The bands are wide because they mix very different choices. The cheapest end assumes shared rooms and shared vehicles, and the top end assumes your own driver and the best rooms available. Ghizer has few expensive places to stay, so the upper limit comes mostly from vehicle hire.

Rooms: what you pay and what you get

Accommodation in Ghizer is simple everywhere, and the price list is short.

  • Budget guesthouses and small hotels at Gupis, Phander and Gahkuch: about PKR 1,500 to 3,500 a night.
  • Mid-range rooms, often with better views and attached bathrooms: about PKR 4,000 to 8,000.
  • A few higher-priced properties, including some former PTDC motels now under new management, list rates well above that. One Phander property listing shows PKR 3,000 to 20,000 a night depending on the room.

A 2020 travel article reported a Phander double at PKR 1,000 a night, which shows how much prices have moved. Rates rise in July, August and around the Shandur Polo Festival, when the valley's limited rooms fill up. Our hotels in Ghizer guide explains the options and what changed with the 2024 leasing of the PTDC motels.

Transport: the part that changes the total

Getting around Ghizer is where budgets split.

  1. Shared transport. Operators and guides quote about PKR 1,800 to 2,500 one way from Islamabad to Phander on shared services, though schedules in the valley are thin and seats leave early in the morning. A few travellers still use it as the cheapest option.
  2. A hired jeep with driver. About PKR 5,000 to 15,000 a day depending on route and vehicle. The longer, rougher routes to Shandur, Yasin and the Ishkoman side sit at the top of that range. Car rental in the region is also quoted at roughly PKR 8,000 a day.
  3. Your own car. Fuel is the main cost. The road from Gilgit to Phander is paved, so a normal car can do it; our Gilgit to Phander guide covers distances and road condition.

If you split a vehicle between four people, the per-person cost of a hired jeep drops sharply, which is why groups of friends and families spend less per head than couples.

Food, fees and extras

Meals run roughly PKR 1,000 to 2,000 a day per person for three meals at local places, with fresh trout the usual treat. Local transport and activities add little beyond the vehicle: guides quote PKR 0 to 3,000 a day for extras such as boat rides, a local guide or fishing.

Trout fishing needs a permit from the Fisheries Department, which has offices at Gahkuch and Phander according to travel sites. We could not verify the current permit fee, so ask when you arrive. Camping is cheaper than rooms, typically about PKR 1,000 to 3,500 a night where it is offered; see our camping at Phander guide.

What do package tours cost?

Operator listings for Ghizer and Phander trips from Islamabad start around PKR 45,000 per person in 2026 for a short trip, with longer itineraries including Shandur Pass and Ishkoman priced higher. What a package includes varies widely: some cover only vehicle and hotels, others meals and guides. Compare inclusions before you compare prices, and be wary of prices that sound very low.

Our own trips are in Hunza, Skardu and Neelum rather than Ghizer. If you are comparing a Ghizer plan with a different valley, the Gilgit, Hunza and Khunjerab tour is from PKR 90,000 per person, with a different mix of hotels and sights.

Ghizer or Hunza: which costs less?

One 2026 guide describes Ghizer as noticeably cheaper than Hunza for equivalent rooms and services, and our Hunza trip cost guide will let you compare room and food prices side by side. The gap comes mainly from fewer visitors and fewer upscale options, not from a shorter trip: the drive to Phander is long. See also our Ghizer vs Hunza comparison.

Ways to keep the cost down

  • Share a vehicle between four rather than hiring a jeep for two.
  • Travel in June or early September, outside the peak July and August weeks and the polo festival.
  • Camp for a night or two at Phander if you have gear; see the Ghizer valley itinerary for how to space the nights.
  • Carry cash. Cards are rare, and cash points are unreliable beyond Gahkuch.
  • Decide your route early, since Yasin and Ishkoman are separate side trips with their own driving costs.

If you travel from Islamabad by road, note that the UK government advises against all travel on the Karakoram Highway between Mansehra and Chilas and that Babusar (N15) avoids that stretch in summer. Foreign-passport holders should check their own government's advice, because it can affect insurance.

Is Ghizer good value?

For travellers who accept simple rooms and long drives, yes. You spend less per day than in Hunza or Skardu and see fewer crowds. It suits friends and families who are happy with basic comforts and budget for a hired vehicle. It suits less well anyone who wants hotels with reliable hot water, restaurants with menus, or a short trip: the distances are long, and the travel time is part of what you pay for.
