You can camp at Phander in Ghizer valley, either at one of the camps around the lake that supply tents and bedding, or in the garden of a guesthouse with your own gear. The season runs roughly April to October. The thing to plan for is the cold: Phander sits at about 2,900 metres, and nights are cold even in summer, so a sleeping bag rated to about -5 °C is the safe choice.

This guide is about camping specifically. For the lake, the drive and the hotels, see our Phander valley guide and Gilgit to Phander guide.

Camp or your own tent?

There are two ways to do it.

Staying at a camp. Several camps and hotels around the lake offer ready-pitched tents with mattresses and blankets. Listings in 2026 mention two-person tents from about PKR 1,000 a night and four-person tents with electricity from about PKR 1,600, and one hotel at Phander is listed at about PKR 3,500 a night for camping and basic accommodation. Those figures come from single listings and change by season, so ask what is included before you pay.

Pitching your own tent. Some guesthouses, such as Lake Inn according to its listing, have a garden where guests can pitch tents. Ask the price; it is likely the cheapest way if you carry your own gear.

Camping is the reasonable option mainly because Phander has few rooms, and rooms fill in July, August and during the Shandur Polo Festival. Our hotels in Ghizer guide covers the room options.

Are there rules for camping at Phander?

We could not find any published rule: no official campsite register, permit or fee for camping at Phander Lake. What travellers should assume instead is:

  • Ask first. The flat land beside the lake and river is farmland and grazing, and much of it belongs to local families. Ask at the nearest guesthouse before pitching.
  • Camp where camps already exist, or inside a guesthouse's grounds, rather than on cultivated fields.
  • Don't light fires. Trees are scarce at altitude and are the village's firewood and shelter. Use a gas stove.
  • Take all rubbish away, including plastic bottles, because collection is limited.
  • Keep clear of the water for washing, and keep noise down; Phander is a quiet village.

If that changes, the local Gilgit-Baltistan tourism department or the camp owners will tell you.

How cold does it get?

This is the point most visitors underestimate. Phander is at about 2,900 metres, which is noticeably higher and colder than Gilgit or Gahkuch. One guide describes typical lows of about 10 °C in June, 12 °C in July, 11 °C in August, 8 °C in September and 3 °C in October, with daytime highs of roughly 17 to 27 °C. Another source warns that nights can fall below zero even in summer. Treat those as ranges rather than forecasts: clear nights at this altitude are always colder than the chart.

October is the month of the autumn colours, and also the coldest of the camping season. Pack accordingly.

What to pack

  • Sleeping bag rated to about -5 °C, and a foam mat or inflatable mat under it. Ground cold comes up through the tent floor.
  • Warm layers: a fleece, a down or padded jacket, a hat and gloves, and thermal underwear for October.
  • A tent that handles wind and rain, if you bring your own, with spare pegs and guy lines.
  • A gas stove and fuel, since cooking on wood is not appropriate here and fuel is hard to buy once you are past Gahkuch.
  • A head torch. Power is unreliable across the valley.
  • Cash. Cards are rare in Ghizer and cash machines are unreliable beyond Gahkuch.
  • Water treatment or bottled water, and basic medicines.
  • Rubbish bags to carry everything out.

Fishing, boats and what else to do

Phander is known for trout. Brown and rainbow trout are fished in the area, and angling permits are issued by the Fisheries Department, at Phander or at Gahkuch, according to a Pakistani travel site. Ask for the current fee and rules before you cast a line. Some travel sites mention boats at the lake and lakeside dining.

Beyond that, there are short walks along the river and between the valley's several small lakes. The road onward to Shandur Pass is a rougher drive; see our Gilgit to Shandur guide for how that works.

Altitude, signal and safety

Phander is high enough that some people notice a mild headache or poor sleep on the first night. Drink water, avoid hard exercise the first evening, and if symptoms are more than mild, drive down.

Mobile signal is patchy, and a 2020 account of the valley describes only 2G coverage. Tell someone your plan, and agree on a check-in. Check road conditions locally before you set out.

If you drive from Islamabad, the UK government advises against all travel on the Karakoram Highway between Mansehra and Chilas; the Babusar (N15) route avoids that stretch in summer. Foreign visitors should check their own government's advice.

Is camping at Phander right for you?

It suits people who carry decent cold-weather gear, enjoy quiet, and don't mind simple toilets and limited food. It is a sensible option for groups when rooms are full. It suits less well small children, older travellers or anyone who wants to sleep warm: in that case a guesthouse room is better and costs only a little more.
