The lakes of Ghizer valley range from ones you can see without leaving the car to ones that take days of walking to reach. Khalti and Phander sit right beside the main road; Handrap is a half-day's walk above Phander; Karambar, one of Pakistan's highest large lakes, is a multi-day trek up Ishkoman valley near the Afghan border. This guide sets the four side by side, so you can judge how much of your trip each one is worth.
| Lake | Altitude | Access | Effort |

Khalti Lake: the easiest to see
Khalti Lake, at 2,217 metres, lies right beside the Gilgit–Shandur road about 10 km west of Gupis, so every vehicle heading up the valley passes it. It is around 2.4 km long, fed by glacier water, and its colour shifts from turquoise to deep green depending on the light. Most people stop for an hour; in a cold winter it usually freezes hard enough to walk on, and it has hosted ice sports events in January in some years. Our Khalti Lake guide covers the seasons, the trout and where to stay nearby.
Phander Lake: the heart of the valley
Phander Lake, at about 2,900 metres, sits beside the road at Phander, small and deep, with dark blue water and trees along parts of its shore. It is the natural base for anyone spending real time in Ghizer, with the widest choice of guesthouses in the upper valley and, in season, the closest jumping-off point for Handrap and Shandur. Our Phander valley guide covers the lake and where to stay.
Handrap Lake: for anglers and walkers
Handrap Lake, at about 3,285 metres, sits in a side valley above Phander with a strong local reputation for trout. It has no road, no facilities and no accommodation; reaching it means a walk of three to four hours from Handrap village, usually with a pack animal hired locally to carry gear if you plan to camp. Fishing needs a licence from the Gilgit-Baltistan fisheries department, and the season is closed from October to March. Our Handrap Lake guide covers the walk, the fishing and camping.
Karambar Lake: the high-altitude goal
Karambar Lake, also written Qurumbar Lake, sits at 4,272 metres inside Qurumbar National Park at the head of Ishkoman valley, one of the highest large lakes in the country. There is no road anywhere near it: the approach from around Imit or Chatorkhand is a trek of three to four days each way across high, open ground, usually with pack animals and a local guide. Its position close to the Afghan border means anyone planning the trek should confirm current local requirements with the administration in Gilgit or Gupis before setting out. Our Ishkoman valley guide covers the approach and the villages along the way.
Comparing the four
If your time is limited, Khalti and Phander give you Ghizer's lakes with almost no extra effort, and both are worth seeing even on a driving day. Handrap adds real physical effort for a specific reward: quiet water and some of the best trout fishing in the region. Karambar is in a different category altogether, a genuine trekking expedition that happens to end at a lake, not a side trip to fit around anything else.
Most first-time visitors to Ghizer see Khalti and Phander and stop there. Handrap is worth the walk if you fish or want a genuine wilderness night with time to spare in Phander. Karambar suits only travellers planning a dedicated multi-day trek, ideally as the main purpose of the trip rather than an add-on.
When to see them
June to September is the reliable window for all four: roads are clear, the high trek to Karambar is only realistic in this period, and Handrap's path is free of snow. Khalti and Phander can be seen slightly outside this window in May or October, though nights are cold by late October. In winter, Khalti is the one lake in the group that actually becomes a different kind of attraction, when it freezes over for walking and occasional ice sports.
