Eagle's Nest Duikar: Hunza's Best Sunrise Point

Eagle's Nest, spelt Eagles Nest on many maps, is the rocky viewpoint above Duikar village in Hunza, at about 2,850 metres and roughly 500 metres above the valley floor. It is 30 to 45 minutes by road from Karimabad, or about two hours of steep walking, and from the top you see Rakaposhi, Diran, Ultar Sar, Ladyfinger and the whole of central Hunza. Sunrise is the best time, when the high peaks turn pink and gold while the valley is still in shadow; sunset is a close second.

Where is Eagle's Nest?

Duikar is a small village high on the mountainside above Altit, on the same side of the valley as Karimabad and one of the highest villages in central Hunza: a few houses and a handful of hotels along a ridge. The viewpoint is a rocky knoll just above the hotels, a five to ten minute walk up a path.

The name is shared with the Eagle's Nest Hotel, which a Duikar family started as a campsite in 1994. Today people use "Eagle's Nest" and "Duikar" interchangeably for the place.

How do you get to Eagle's Nest?

By jeep or car

The road leaves the Karimabad and Altit area and climbs the mountainside in a series of steep, tight hairpins to Duikar. It is narrow, with drops on the outside of the bends, and it is often driven in the dark on the way up for sunrise.

• A local jeep or car with driver is the easiest choice. Hotels in Karimabad arrange them, for sunrise or sunset, and the drivers know the road. Agree the price and the waiting time before you set off.
• Your own car can make it in dry weather with an experienced mountain driver and a car in good order. Don't try it tired, in the dark, after rain or with a low, heavily loaded car.
• Time: allow 30 to 45 minutes from Karimabad, plus the short walk from the hotels to the viewpoint.

On foot

Walking up takes about two hours of steady climbing from Karimabad or Altit, and it is a proper uphill slog at altitude. Most people who walk do it in daylight and come down by jeep, or go up by jeep and walk down. Don't walk up in the dark for sunrise unless you know the way.

Sunrise or sunset?

Sunrise is the classic. You arrive in the dark or the half-light, the valley is still asleep, and the first light touches the highest summits while everything below stays blue and grey. For a short while the snow turns pink, then gold. It is also the calmest time, with the fewest people.

Sunset is easier. You don't need a 4 am start, the drive up is in daylight, and the evening light on the mountains and the long shadows across the valley are very good. It is also when many visitors come up, so expect company in summer.

If you only have one chance, go for sunrise in clear weather and sunset if you are tired from a long drive the day before or travelling with small children.

Sunrise and sunset times by month

Times are for the middle of each month and assume a flat horizon; the high peaks catch the light at about these times, while the valley floor gets the sun later and loses it earlier.

For sunrise, leave Karimabad about an hour before sunrise, so you are on the viewpoint 15 to 20 minutes before the first light. For sunset, arrive an hour before, to see the light change and to find a spot to sit.

Which peaks can you see from Eagle's Nest?

On a clear day the view takes in several of the highest mountains in the Karakoram. The main ones:

• Rakaposhi (7,788 m), the huge white mountain across the valley, rising from the Nagar side. It dominates the view from almost everywhere in central Hunza.
• Diran (7,266 m), east of Rakaposhi on the same ridge, on the Nagar side of the valley.
• Golden Peak, or Spantik (7,027 m), further up the Nagar side, named for the pale marble pillar on its north-west face.
• Ultar Sar (7,388 m), directly behind Karimabad, whose south flank rises more than 5,000 metres above the Hunza river in under 10 km.
• Ladyfinger (Bubulimoting), the thin rock spire beside Hunza Peak on the Ultar massif.

Should you stay the night at Duikar?

Staying at Duikar means you walk out of your room to the viewpoint for sunrise, with no 4 am drive. You get sunset and sunrise from the same place, and the evening is very quiet.

The downsides are real, though:

• You are cut off. There is nowhere to walk to, and every trip down means the same steep road.
• It is colder than Karimabad, noticeably so at night outside high summer.
• The choice is small: a handful of hotels, most of them simple, some built primarily for the view. Ask about heating, hot water and backup power before booking, especially in spring and autumn.
• It is a sensitive spot. In 2025 Gilgit-Baltistan's environmental agency recommended a pause on new hotel building at Duikar, among other parts of Hunza, because of the pressure on water and slopes.

What to carry

Even in summer, the top is cold before sunrise, and the wind can be sharp.

• A warm jacket, hat and gloves for sunrise, whatever the month
• A torch or phone light for the path in the dark
• Shoes with grip; the rock on the viewpoint is uneven
• Water, and tea or snacks if you are going up before the hotels are serving
• Cash for the jeep and for tea

Take care on the viewpoint itself. There are drops on several sides and no railings, so keep children close and don't step backwards for a photograph.

Is Eagle's Nest worth it?

Yes, if the sky is clear. It is the single best view in central Hunza, it takes an hour or two, and it rarely disappoints in good weather. Photographers, couples and anyone who has come to Hunza for the mountains should go.

It is less rewarding in cloud, when the peaks disappear and you are looking at the valley alone. Check the sky the evening before and in the morning, and if the summits are hidden, go another day. For families with small children or older parents, sunset is kinder than sunrise, and the road is the main challenge, so use a local driver.
