Choose Kund Malir if you have a weekend, want a beach that is under four hours from Karachi and don't mind basic facilities. Choose Gwadar if you have three or more days, want hotels, a town to walk around and a headland to climb, and are happy with a long drive or a flight. They are both on the Makran Coastal Highway in Balochistan, but they are very different trips, and the biggest difference is distance.

This post compares the two so you can pick one. For detail on each, see our guides to Kund Malir beach and places to visit in Gwadar.

How far is each from Karachi?

Kund Malir is about 237 to 240 km from Karachi on the Makran Coastal Highway, and the drive takes 3.5 to 4 hours in normal conditions. That is why it works for weekends, and why many Karachi families do it as a very early start and a late return.

Gwadar is a much longer trip. The highway between Karachi and Gwadar is 653 km, and with the roads in and out of Karachi most people should plan on 650 to 700 km. Wikipedia gives the drive as 6 to 7 hours since the highway was completed in 2004; plan for longer with stops and checkpoints. Our post on Karachi to Gwadar by road goes through the route, and Gwadar is also reachable by flight from Karachi.

Kund Malir is also on the way to Gwadar, so it is possible to combine them, with an overnight stop. See our Makran Coastal Highway itinerary.

Which has better facilities?

Gwadar, by a distance. It has hotels at several price levels, restaurants, shops, a cricket stadium, and an airport. You can arrive without much preparation. Our Gwadar hotels guide covers the choices.

Kund Malir is a remote beach. Travel sources agree on the main points: there are no fuel stations nearby, so fill your tank before leaving Karachi; mobile signal is limited; there is no reliable water supply on the beach, so carry your own; and toilets are basic. Accommodation is mainly beach huts, small resorts and camping, and booking ahead, often through a Karachi tour operator, is the most reliable way to get a hut. Which is better for swimming and beach time?

Neither is a resort beach with lifeguards. At Kund Malir you can swim, but currents can be strong depending on the season, so go in only where the water is calm and stay close to shore. In Gwadar, the West Bay beach along Marine Drive is the main stretch, and our Gwadar beach guide covers where to go. The sea off the Makran coast is rougher in the summer monsoon months, so winter is the better time for both.

Kund Malir is the more dramatic of the two, with mountains, sea and desert together, and it is within Hingol National Park. It was added to a list of Asia's most beautiful beaches in 2018. Gwadar's appeal is the town and the headland.

What else is there to do?

Kund Malir is a base for the rock formations of Hingol: the Princess of Hope, the Balochistan Sphinx and the mud volcanoes, plus the Hindu pilgrimage site of Hinglaj Mata nearby. See also Hingol National Park.

Gwadar offers Koh-e-Batil, the old town and Shahi Bazaar, the fish harbour, the cricket stadium and sunsets from the headland. Our Gwadar itinerary shows how to spread them over three days.

Which is quieter?

Weekends draw more visitors to Kund Malir, especially between October and March, and a weekday visit is quieter. Gwadar's winter season is its busy time, so book hotels early. In both places, going on a weekday is the simplest way to avoid crowds.

Which is safer?

Both are in Balochistan, where the UK government advises against all travel, and both lie on a highway with routine checkpoints. Pakistani visitors travel to both, mostly in winter, but Gwadar is a heavily guarded town that has seen attacks, including one on the Gwadar Port Authority complex in March 2024, and the longer drive means more time on the highway. Check local news and current police advice before you go, carry your original CNIC and plan to drive in daylight. Our posts on whether Gwadar is safe to visit and whether the Makran Coastal Highway is safe go into more detail. Overseas visitors should check their own government's advice, which may say not to go and can void travel insurance.

So which should you pick?

  • A weekend from Karachi: Kund Malir. It is close, and the scenery is the best on the route.
  • Three days or more, and you want comfort: Gwadar, either by air or with a night on the road.
  • Travelling with small children or elderly parents: Kund Malir for the shorter drive, but check the basic facilities first. Gwadar is better if you want a proper hotel.
  • You want both: drive to Gwadar and stop at Kund Malir on the way. It adds a night, but it breaks the long drive.
