Naran in October is quiet, clear and cold. The summer crowds have gone, the air is dry and the lakes are easy to visit, but nights fall below freezing, hotels start to wind down, and early snow can close Babusar Top or the upper valley at short notice. It is a good month for travellers who want space and do not mind the cold, and a poor one for anyone who needs a guaranteed route north.

What is the weather like in Naran in October?
Climate averages for Naran give a daytime high of about 10.6°C and a night low of about minus 1.3°C for October, with only about 37 mm of rain, a fraction of July or August. Days can be sunny and still. Once the sun goes behind the ridge the temperature drops quickly.
Higher up, at Saif ul Malook, Lulusar and Batakundi, it is colder again, with frost most mornings. Fresh snow on the peaks above the lakes is normal by the end of the month and sometimes earlier. Compared with September, the difference is clear: October is the month the valley shifts from late summer to winter.
What is open in Naran in October?
Most of the valley is still accessible early in the month, but the picture narrows as the weeks pass.
- The town and the road from Balakot: open, with lower traffic than summer.
- Hotels: many stay open through the early part of the month. In the upper valley some start to close, and the hotels that remain may offer fewer services. Confirm heating and hot water when you book.
- Saif ul Malook and other jeep tracks: normally run in early and mid October while the weather holds. Fares are set by the Balakot administration and were notified for 2026; see our Saif ul Malook jeep fare guide.
- Babusar Top: open until snow closes it. Do not plan a crossing without checking the day before.

Can snow close Naran in October?
Yes, and it has happened. Babusar Pass was closed on 15 October in 2023 after unexpected snowfall, with travellers stranded and moved to Chilas. In 2024 the Kaghan road became impassable in early November, and authorities declared the season over on 1 December. Not every year is that early, but October is when the first snow arrives.
If snow falls while you are in the upper valley, the safe response is to come down to Kaghan, Balakot or Shogran before the road becomes difficult, rather than wait. Local advisories and the district administration will say when the upper valley is closed to visitors.
What the first snow has looked like in recent years
The dates differ every year, which is the reason to keep the plan loose.
- 15 October 2023: unexpected snow closed Babusar Pass early, with dozens of travellers stranded and moved to Chilas.
- Early November 2024: the Kaghan road became impassable, hotels in the upper valley shut, electricity and police posts were withdrawn, and the district administration declared the season closed on 1 December, leaving Shogran and Kaghan as the only open destinations.
- 5 November 2025: snow fell at Batakundi, Besar, Lulusar and Saif ul Malook, and the Kaghan Development Authority put teams at key points to warn visitors of slippery roads and low visibility.

How to plan a flexible October trip
- Choose weekdays and early-to-mid October if you want the best chance of open tracks and quiet roads.
- Check the day before with the Naran hotel or local police, or through the provincial tourism information line, 1422.
- Do the upper valley first. Go to the lake and Batakundi on the clearest days, and leave lower-altitude sightseeing for weather that turns.
- Set a turning-back rule. If snow starts, head down the same day.
- Carry more fuel and food than you think you need if driving yourself, and keep to daylight.
Is October a good time for the lakes?
For photographs and quiet, yes. The air is clear, visibility is often the best of the year, and you will often have the shore largely to yourself on a weekday. The cost is cold: expect a windchill at the water that feels far below the town figures. Expect fewer visitors and fewer stalls open than in summer, so bring water and snacks. Who should go in October, and who should not
October suits travellers who like cold weather and quiet, who can be flexible about the last stages of their route, and who are happy to use Naran as a base with a plan B for a closure. It suits couples and small groups more than families with small children.
It does not suit anyone planning to cross Babusar to Gilgit-Baltistan on a fixed date, anyone who wants every lake tea shop open, or anyone unprepared for sub-zero nights. For warmer weather with similar quiet, September is a better bet.
