What to pack for Naran changes more through the season than most first-time visitors expect. Naran itself sits at 2,409 metres, and everywhere people actually go, Saif-ul-Malook, Lulusar Lake, Babusar Top, is several hundred to nearly 2,000 metres higher and colder again. A warm layer belongs in every bag whatever month you travel, and beyond that the list depends on whether you are packing for snow, rain or clear autumn cold.

What to pack, whatever the month
A few items belong in every bag regardless of when you travel, because Naran's evenings are cool even in midsummer and the popular outings all climb well above the town:
- A warm jacket, fleece or down layer for the evening and for any trip to the lake or the pass
- A hat and gloves
- Closed, sturdy shoes with a good grip, not sandals or thin trainers
- Sunglasses and sunscreen; the sun at this altitude burns quickly, especially near snow or water
- Cash, since jeep drivers and many hotels and small restaurants deal in cash only
- A power bank and a downloaded offline map, since mobile signal is patchy to absent above Naran
Packing by month
May
The road is open to Naran, but the upper valley is still half in winter. Snow lies in walls beside the road, and the lake may be partly frozen. Pack a warm jacket, a fleece, gloves, and waterproof shoes or boots with real grip; trainers get soaked in slush within minutes. A light rain jacket is worth adding too, since showers are common.
June
Naran's most comfortable month, with warm, mostly dry days and cool rather than cold nights. Light layers for daytime, a warm jacket for the evening and for Saif-ul-Malook, and sun protection cover most of what you need. If you are heading up to Babusar Top, add a warmer layer again; the top is roughly 10 degrees colder than the town.
July and August
The warmest months, and also the monsoon. Pack light daytime layers, a proper waterproof jacket rather than a thin showerproof one, and a dry bag or liner for anything electronic. September
The clearest, most settled month, but nights cool through the month from around 10°C early on to nearer 3°C by the end. Pack as you would for a crisp autumn evening at home, with a proper jacket rather than a light layer, plus the usual sun protection for daytime.
October and November
Cold and increasingly quiet, with frost on the ground some mornings and the first snow possible at Babusar. A proper winter jacket, thermal layers, a hat and gloves are all worth having, and if you are travelling in November, tyre chains for the car.
Extra kit for children
- A change of warm, dry clothes for the jeep ride to Saif-ul-Malook, where slush and spray are common in spring
- A well-fitted, warm hat and gloves in a child's size, since adult sizing rarely works well for small hands
- Snacks and water carried with you rather than relied on at the top, where prices are higher and choice is limited
- Any regular medication kept with you in the vehicle, not packed away in the boot

Extra kit for a day on foot
Anyone walking up to Saif-ul-Malook, along the shore at Lulusar, or on a longer trek such as Dudipatsar Lake needs more than a day-trip packing list:
- Proper walking shoes or boots, broken in before the trip, not new ones
- A daypack with water, high-energy snacks and a basic first aid kit
- A waterproof jacket and trousers, since weather at altitude changes quickly
- A head torch and a whistle, particularly for anything longer than a short walk
- Water purification tablets or a filter for anything beyond a short outing, since there is nowhere to buy sealed water once you are away from the road
If you are planning to walk rather than take a jeep to Saif-ul-Malook, allow extra time to pack for a genuine day hike rather than a short outing.
What you can leave at home
Naran's bazaar covers most everyday needs: basic toiletries, snacks, bottled water, simple clothing and phone accessories are all available, though the choice is narrower and the prices somewhat higher than in Islamabad or Mansehra. Specialist trekking gear, tents and technical clothing are not reliably available locally, so bring or hire those before you leave the city.
Getting the packing right for your trip
The single biggest mistake is packing for the temperature on the day you leave the plains rather than the temperature where you are actually going. A 35°C morning in Lahore says nothing about a 4°C evening at Saif-ul-Malook. Pack for the coldest place on your itinerary, not the warmest.
