Saif-ul-Malook Jeep Fare and Rules for Private Cars

The official Saif-ul-Malook jeep fare in 2026 is PKR 5,500 for a return trip from Naran, and it is charged per jeep, not per person. The rate was fixed by the Assistant Commissioner of Balakot after a meeting with transporters in May 2026. A jeep seats six or seven, so a full one works out at under PKR 1,000 each. Ordinary cars can't make the climb: the track to the lake is steep, unpaved and broken, so you leave your car in Naran and take a local jeep.

What is the official jeep fare to Saif-ul-Malook?

In 2026 the Balakot administration notified fixed round-trip fares for tourist transport across the Kaghan valley. The ones that start from Naran are:

• Naran to Lake Saif-ul-Malook, by jeep: PKR 5,500
• Naran to Lalazar, by jeep: PKR 4,500
• Naran to Babusar, by jeep: PKR 12,000
• Naran to Babusar Top, by Suzuki Carry or yellow cab: PKR 9,000

All of these are for the whole vehicle and for the trip there and back. The same notification covers the jeeps from Kiwai to Shogran and Siri Paye. Our Naran trip cost guide sets these fares alongside hotels, fuel and food if you are working out a full budget.

Rates of PKR 2,000 to 5,000 for the lake still circulate on older travel sites; they are out of date. Use the notified figure as your reference. On busy days, especially at Eid, you may be quoted more: stay polite and mention the official rate. The notification also told the Kaghan Development Authority to set up a complaint desk for tourists; ask your hotel whether it is operating.

Per jeep, not per person: how to split it

Because the fare is for the vehicle, the size of your group decides what you pay:

• Six or seven people: the cheapest way up. Split evenly, each person pays well under PKR 1,000.
• A family of four or five: you pay the whole fare, but the per-person cost is still modest.
• A couple, or someone on their own: you pay the full PKR 5,500 for a jeep with empty seats. Ask at your hotel whether another small group is going up at the same time and would share.

Children take seats like everyone else, and a jeep crammed beyond its seats is miserable on the climb.

What the fare covers, and how long the driver waits

The fare covers the ride up, a wait at the lake and the ride back to Naran. The 2026 notification does not state how long that wait should be, and that is where most disagreements start. Before you get in, agree three things with the driver:

1. How long you will have at the lake. Most visitors spend one to two hours there, which is enough for a walk along the shore, a cup of tea and perhaps a boat ride. If you want longer, say so now, not at the lake.
2. When you are leaving Naran, particularly if you want to be among the first up.
3. The price, in full. Confirm that PKR 5,500 is for the return trip with the waiting time you have agreed, and that there is nothing extra for the wait.

A driver who waits longer than agreed will reasonably expect more. What you want to avoid is finding out at the lake that he planned to leave after 45 minutes.

Why can't a private car go to Saif-ul-Malook?

The track from Naran climbs about 800 metres in 8 or 9 km. It is an unpaved jeep track, with tight hairpins, loose stones, deep ruts and stretches where the edge falls away steeply. An ordinary saloon or hatchback doesn't have the ground clearance, the grip or the low gearing for it, and there is little room to turn round or pass if you get into trouble.

The track also changes through the season:

• In spring it lies under snow and old avalanche debris. The Kaghan Development Authority has to cut it open with heavy machinery every year before any jeep can pass; in 2025 it reopened on about 1 May after six months shut.
• In the monsoon it is among the first roads in the valley to close. On 30 July 2026 flash floods washed away a section of it and about 200 jeeps of tourists had to be brought down, and the district administration then ordered it restored as a matter of urgency.
• After rain it turns to slippery mud, and small streams cross it.

Local drivers take this track several times a day and know where it is soft, where the snow is lying and where to wait for an oncoming jeep. That, more than any rule, is why nearly everyone takes one.

What about my own 4x4?

A capable four-wheel drive with good tyres can manage the track in dry weather, and some visitors do drive up. Do it only if the driver has real experience on steep, broken tracks. A city SUV on road tyres is exactly the vehicle that gets stuck on a hairpin with a queue of jeeps behind it.

Where to find a jeep in Naran

Under the traffic plan the Balakot administration introduced in Naran in 2026, traffic through the bazaar runs one way, parking inside the bazaar is banned, and jeeps are kept off the main street. The jeep stand for the lake may not be where it was on your last visit.

The simplest approach is to ask your hotel the evening before where the lake jeeps are waiting that season, or whether it can book one for you. Agreeing the start time and the wait the night before saves haggling at the stand in the morning.

Lake timings and closures

The lake's hours are set by the district administration, and they changed more than once in 2026:

• 1 August 2026: after heavy-rain and cloudburst warnings from the Met Office, the Mansehra district administration banned visits to the lake at the request of the NDMA and PDMA.
• 7 August 2026: the ban was lifted after a week, with visits allowed only between 9.30 am and 4 pm. Naran police were told to stop anyone leaving for the lake before the opening time or staying after closing.

When hours are enforced, the "first jeep at dawn" advice you read online won't work, and with a 4 pm closing there is no point setting off late expecting a long wait at the lake. A weekday morning soon after opening is the calmest time at the jeep stand and on the track.

Jeep, walk or skip it?

Take the jeep if you are a family, have older parents or young children with you, or have only a day or two in Naran. It is quick, and in a full jeep it is cheap.

Walk up if you are fit, have had a night to get used to Naran's altitude, and the weather is settled. The walk follows the jeep track, takes half a day up and costs nothing.
