Naran Trip Cost: A Full Budget Breakdown for 2026

The cost of a Naran trip comes down to four things: getting there, your room, the jeeps, and when you go. In 2026 the official return jeep fare from Naran to Saif-ul-Malook is PKR 5,500 for the whole jeep, a budget room costs roughly PKR 4,000 to 7,000 a night, and a family car uses about PKR 23,000 of petrol on a three-day trip from Islamabad. Go at Eid or on a July weekend and the rooms can cost far more for the same bed.

The figures below are 2026 rates gathered from official notices and several published sources. They are a guide for planning, not quotes: prices change with the season, and hotels in particular set their own rates day by day.

Official jeep fares from Naran

You can drive your own car to Naran, Batakundi, Lulusar and Babusar Top, but the tracks to Saif-ul-Malook, Lalazar and Siri Paye need a local jeep. After a meeting with transporters and other stakeholders in May 2026, the Assistant Commissioner of Balakot notified fixed round-trip fares for tourist transport, per vehicle rather than per person:

A few things make these fares go further or cost more:

• Fill the jeep. A jeep takes six or so passengers. Six people share PKR 5,500 for the lake at under PKR 1,000 each; a couple pays the whole fare.
• Agree the waiting time. The fare is for the return trip. Ask how long the driver will wait at the lake or the meadow before you set off.
• Use the official rate as your reference. If a driver quotes much more, mention the notified fare. The administration also directed the Kaghan Development Authority to set up a complaint desk for tourists.

Babusar by jeep only makes sense if you have no car of your own. The road to the top is paved, and in your own car the cost is fuel.

Hotel rates in Naran

Naran has hotels of every kind, from rooms above bazaar shops to riverside resorts, and no fixed tariff. Published 2025 and 2026 rates fall roughly into three bands for a double or family room:

• Budget, about PKR 4,000 to 7,000 a night. Guesthouses and small hotels, many in or near the bazaar. Expect an attached bathroom and parking, but check hot water and bedding before you agree.
• Mid-range, about PKR 7,000 to 15,000. Cleaner rooms with reliable hot water and heating, often a restaurant, sometimes a river view.
• Upper end, about PKR 18,000 and up. Riverside resorts and the better hotels outside the bazaar, with rates reaching PKR 30,000 or more for suites and cottages.

What moves the price most is the date. Weekdays in June and September are the best value. Summer weekends, 14 August and above all the Eid holidays are the most expensive, and some hotels double their rates. Rooms also fill quickly then, so the cheapest ones go first.

Fuel and tolls

Most visitors drive. The fuel sum depends on your car and how far you go beyond Naran:

• From Islamabad: about 550 km for the return trip to Naran, plus about 130 km if you drive up to Babusar Top and back, and some local running. Call it 700 km. A car doing 12 km a litre uses about 60 litres.
• From Lahore: about 1,300 km return, plus the same local driving. Call it 1,450 km, or about 120 litres.

At the September 2026 petrol price of about PKR 390 a litre, that is roughly PKR 23,000 from Islamabad and PKR 47,000 from Lahore. Fuel prices change every two weeks, and a heavy SUV or a car stuck in Eid traffic will use more, so redo the sum before you go.

Tolls for a car in 2026 are PKR 400 each way on the Hazara Motorway between Hasan Abdal and Mansehra, plus a stretch of the M-1, and from Lahore another PKR 1,430 each way on the M-2. Our road guides for Islamabad to Naran and Lahore to Naran cover where to fill up.

Food

Naran's food costs are closer to a hill-station bazaar than a city restaurant, and they vary with where you eat:

• Budget: the dhabas and small restaurants in the bazaar, with daal, karahi, parathas and tea. Breakfast at a simple hotel is often the cheapest meal of the day.
• Mid-range: the larger bazaar restaurants and hotel dining rooms, with a wider menu and a table by the river.
• Upper end: hotel restaurants and trout dinners. Trout is sold by weight, so ask the price per kilo before it goes on the grill.

Everywhere, prices rise at Eid and in the busiest weeks. Buy snacks, water and anything children are fussy about in Islamabad or Mansehra, where the choice is wider and the prices lower. At the lake itself, tea and snacks cost more than in the bazaar.

Three budget levels

These are for a family or group of four, driving from Islamabad for three days and two nights, with one day at Saif-ul-Malook and one in the upper valley. Food is left as a separate line because it depends so much on your appetite and where you eat.

Before food, the budget plan comes to roughly PKR 38,000 to 45,000 for the group, or about PKR 9,500 to 11,000 each. The mid-range plan comes to roughly PKR 48,000 to 65,000, or about PKR 12,000 to 16,000 each. The comfort plan starts at around PKR 46,000 for rooms and jeeps alone, before the car hire and meals.

From Lahore, add about PKR 24,000 for the extra fuel and PKR 2,900 for the M-2 in both directions, and at least one night on the road each way.

The extras people forget

• Activities at the lake. Boat rides and horse rides at Saif-ul-Malook are paid for on the spot. Agree the price before you get on.
• Rafting and other activities on the Kunhar are priced separately by the operators.
• A spare night. Rain, a landslide or a closure order can keep you an extra day, as happened to many visitors when the Saif-ul-Malook track washed out in July 2026. You pay for the room either way.
• Shogran or Siri Paye on the way up or down adds a jeep fare from Kiwai.
• Warm clothes if you are coming from the plains in summer and don't own any. Naran's evenings are cold even in July.
• Cash. Many hotels, all the jeep drivers and most restaurants deal in cash. Withdraw enough in Islamabad, Mansehra or Balakot for the whole trip plus a spare night.

What peak season does to the budget

The same trip can cost very different amounts depending on the dates:

1. Eid holidays. The most expensive days of the year, with the highest room rates, the longest queues for jeeps and hours of extra driving in traffic, which also burns fuel.
2. July and August weekends, and 14 August. Rooms fill and rates rise, especially in the better hotels.
3. June and September weekdays. The best value in the season, with everything open.
4. Late April, May and October. Cheaper and quieter, but with fewer places open and a real chance the lake track or Babusar is shut. Check our guide to the best time to visit Naran before booking.

Is a group tour cheaper?

For one or two people, usually. Three-day group departures from Lahore and Islamabad are widely advertised at around PKR 15,000 to 18,000 per person in 2026, with transport, two nights in shared rooms and some meals. The jeep to Saif-ul-Malook is often excluded, and "shared" usually means three or four to a room, so read the inclusions before you book.

For a family of four or more in their own car, driving yourself is usually cheaper and much more flexible.

How to spend less in Naran

1. Travel on weekdays, never at Eid.
2. Fill the jeep, or share one with another small group from your hotel.
3. Drive your own car to Babusar Top instead of hiring a jeep for it.
4. Book directly with a hotel you have spoken to, and confirm the rate in writing.
5. Stay a little outside the bazaar for quieter, often better-value rooms.
6. Eat where the drivers and local families eat, not at the busiest riverside terraces.
