Lahore to Naran by Road: Distance and Drive Plan

Lahore to Naran by road is roughly 630 to 670 km and about 10 to 11 hours of driving. The route is motorway almost to the mountains: the M-2 to Islamabad, the M-1 to the Hazara interchange, the Hazara Motorway to Mansehra, then the Kaghan valley road through Balakot to Naran. Strong drivers do it in one long day, leaving Lahore at 4 am. Most families are far happier splitting it in two, with a night in Islamabad, Abbottabad or Balakot.

This guide covers the route, the one-day and two-day plans, where to sleep on the way, and where to stop for fuel and food with children in the car.

The route from Lahore

1. M-2, Lahore to Islamabad, about 4 to 4.5 hours. The 375 km motorway has service areas on both sides at Sukheki, Sial, Bhera, Kallar Kahar and Chakri. The climb through the Salt Range near Kallar Kahar is the only hilly section.
2. M-1 to the Hazara interchange, under an hour. You don't need to go into Islamabad. Where the M-2 ends, carry on west on the M-1 towards Peshawar and turn north at the Hazara interchange near Burhan.
3. Hazara Motorway to Mansehra, about 1.5 hours. A fast, modern road past Haripur, Havelian and Abbottabad. Leave it at the Mansehra interchange.
4. N-15, Mansehra to Naran, about 3.5 to 4 hours. Through Mansehra, down to the Kunhar river and up the valley through Balakot, Kiwai, Paras and Kaghan town. This is two-lane mountain road with bends, bazaars and holiday traffic, and it is where your day will run late if it runs late at all.

One day or two?

The deciding question is not whether you can drive 11 hours, but whether you can arrive in Naran in daylight and still enjoy the next day. The valley road is not one to drive tired or after dark.

In one day

Leave Lahore at 4 am with two drivers who share the wheel. With a breakfast stop you are past Islamabad by about 9, at Mansehra by 10.30 or 11, and in Naran by mid-afternoon after lunch in Balakot. It works on a weekday for a group of adults. It is a hard day for small children, and on a summer Saturday or at Eid the valley traffic can push arrival into the evening.

In two days

This is what we suggest for families. Three good ways to split the drive:

Islamabad is the easy choice: you can leave Lahore after work or school, and there are hotels at every price. The second day is then the standard drive from Islamabad, which should start at dawn.

Abbottabad or Mansehra splits the trip most evenly and gets the motorway done on day one. Abbottabad has the wider choice of hotels and restaurants.

Balakot puts you at the mouth of the valley, on the Kunhar, with only the mountain section left. You reach Naran early enough to go up to Saif-ul-Malook the same day if everyone is fresh. The catch is that day one ends on the valley road, so leave Lahore early enough to reach Balakot before dark.

Overnight, while the children sleep

Many group tours leave Lahore at 10 or 11 pm and reach Naran late the next morning. That works in a coaster with a professional driver. For a family in its own car it means driving through the night and then up the valley on no sleep, which is exactly what not to do.

Fuel: where to fill up

A family car doing about 12 km a litre on this mix of motorway and mountain road will use roughly 55 litres to get from Lahore to Naran, more if it is heavily loaded or stuck in traffic with the air conditioning on. At the September 2026 price of about PKR 390 a litre, that is around PKR 21,000 to 22,000 each way. Fuel prices change every two weeks, so redo the sum before you go.

Where to fill:

• Leave Lahore with a full tank.
• Top up on the M-2, at Bhera or Kallar Kahar, whichever suits your breakfast stop.
• Fill again in Mansehra or Balakot before the valley road. This is the important one.
• Top up in Naran if you plan to drive up to Lulusar or Babusar Top. There is a petrol pump at the entrance to the bazaar, but queues can be long in peak season.

Don't let the tank run low in the valley. An Eid jam between Balakot and Naran can mean hours of stop-start driving on a climb.

Food and rest stops for families

Planned stops make the day much easier for children. A pattern that works for a 4 or 5 am start from Lahore:

1. Breakfast at Bhera or Kallar Kahar on the M-2, two to three hours out. The service areas have restaurants, clean toilets, fuel and space for children to run about.
2. A short break at Chakri, the last service area before Islamabad, or skip it if everyone is awake and happy.
3. Lunch in Balakot, by the river. It is the last town with a wide choice of restaurants before Naran.
4. Tea at the Kiwai waterfall, where the stalls put tables in the cold stream. A good place to stretch legs before the final two hours.

Toilets beyond Balakot are basic, so use the ones at your lunch stop. Carry water, snacks and something for car sickness: the bends between Balakot and Naran upset children who were fine on the motorway. Stopping every hour on that stretch helps more than anything else.

Tolls and M-Tag

From July 2026 the toll for a car on the M-2 between Lahore and Islamabad is PKR 1,430, and on the Hazara Motorway between Hasan Abdal and Mansehra PKR 400. Add a smaller amount for the short run on the M-1. Allow roughly PKR 2,000 each way for a car, and check the National Highway Authority's current rates before you leave, because tolls rise most years.

The motorways use M-Tag. Get one fitted and topped up before you leave Lahore, rather than finding out at the first toll plaza that it isn't working.

Things Lahore families often don't expect

• The temperature drop. You leave the plains in summer heat and arrive somewhere that needs a jacket in the evening. Keep warm clothes for everyone in the car, not buried in the boot.
• The last 119 km. The motorway part is about 500 km in six hours; the valley part is about 119 km in four. Plan around the slow part.
• Weekend and Eid traffic. The valley road has no alternative, and one broken-down truck on a bend holds everyone up. Travel on weekdays if you possibly can.
• Closures. The road to Naran is closed beyond Kaghan town from about December to late April, and in the monsoon rain can block it for hours. Check our guide to the best time to visit Naran before you choose dates.
• Night driving. Nobody should be on the valley road after dark. If you are running late, stop in Balakot or Kiwai and finish in the morning.

Getting the car ready

The motorway is easy on a car; the valley road and the return downhill are not. Before you leave:

• Have the brakes, tyres (including the spare), coolant and battery checked.
• Don't overload the roof. A heavily loaded car climbs slowly and brakes badly on the way down.
• Carry a tow rope, a torch, a basic first-aid kit and a phone charger for the car.
• Download offline maps. Signal is patchy on parts of the valley road and above Naran.

Coming home to Lahore

The return is the same drive in reverse, and families often find it harder, because everyone is tired and the traffic heading down the valley builds on Sundays and at the end of Eid. Leave Naran by 9 or 10 am so the valley road is behind you by early afternoon. If you are breaking the return, a night in Islamabad puts the easy M-2 last.

Is the drive from Lahore worth it?

For a trip of five days or more, yes. Two days of driving each way is fine if they are split sensibly, and Naran gives Lahore families the cool air, rivers and lakes they are driving north for. Our three-day Kaghan itinerary shows how to use the days in the valley once you are there.

For a long weekend of three or four days, think twice. You will spend most of it in the car, and the one full day in Naran may be the day it rains. A closer trip, or a flight north with a longer stay, may serve you better.
