Lahore to Fairy Meadows is a two-day journey for most drivers when the Babusar Pass is open: about 10 to 11 hours on day one from Lahore to Naran, then five to six hours over Babusar to Raikot Bridge, a jeep to Tato and a two-to-four-hour walk to the meadow on day two. On the Karakoram Highway, the only route when Babusar is closed, the realistic stop is Besham, and you reach the meadow on the morning of day three.
The route is roughly 800 to 900 km, depending on the road. The first 375 km, up the M-2, are the easy part. This guide sets out the two-day plan, the alternatives, and where to stop the night on each route.

The two-day plan in outline
- Day 1: Lahore to Naran, leaving before dawn. Motorways as far as Mansehra, then the Kaghan valley road.
- Day 2: Naran over Babusar Top to Chilas and Raikot Bridge by around midday, then the jeep and the walk. On the meadow by late afternoon.
It is a big first day and it depends on the pass being open, but it is the only way to reach the meadow on day two without driving in the dark.
Day 1: Lahore to Naran
You don't need to go into Islamabad at all. Take the M-2 north from Lahore to its end at the junction with the M-1, about 4 to 4.5 hours with a stop at one of the service areas. Turn west on the M-1 to the Burhan interchange near Hasan Abdal, then north on the Hazara Motorway to Mansehra.
At Mansehra you leave the motorway for the N-15 up the Kaghan valley, through Balakot and Kaghan to Naran. This part is slower: a two-lane valley road with villages, bazaars and holiday traffic. From Lahore to Naran is usually 10 to 11 hours of driving, more on a summer weekend.
Leave Lahore by 4 or 5 am. You will be off the M-2 before the heat builds, through Balakot by early afternoon, and in Naran in time to rest. Start much later and you risk driving the last stretch of the Kaghan road in the dark.
Day 2: Naran to Fairy Meadows
The second day follows the same route as the Islamabad plan:
- Leave Naran at 6 am for Babusar Top, at 4,173 metres.
- Descend to Chilas, about four hours from Naran. Fuel up and draw cash; there is no ATM beyond Chilas.
- Drive about 60 km up the KKH to Raikot Bridge, an hour and a half to two hours.
- Take the jeep from the stand at the bridge to Tato. Only local jeeps are allowed on this track, and the fare is fixed per jeep; our guide to the Fairy Meadows jeep track explains how it works.
- Walk to the meadow, 5 km and two to four hours.
The descent from Babusar to Chilas is long and steep. After a long drive the day before, it is where tired drivers and hot brakes cause trouble, so take it in a low gear, stop if the brakes smell, and swap drivers if you can.
The KKH alternative, when Babusar is closed
From roughly November to May, and whenever Babusar is shut by snow or flood damage, the only road is the Karakoram Highway. From Lahore, take the M-2, M-1 and the Hazara Motorway all the way to Thakot, then the KKH through Besham, Dasu and Kohistan to Chilas.
The KKH plan looks like this:
- Day 1: Lahore to Besham, about 9 to 10 hours. Don't push on through Kohistan in the dark.
- Day 2: Besham to Chilas, then on to Raikot Bridge. Stay the night at the bridge or in Chilas.
- Day 3: Jeep to Tato first thing, and on the meadow by late morning or midday.
That is two days to the bridge, but the meadow on day three. Squeezing it into two means leaving Besham before dawn and reaching the jeep stand in the early afternoon at best, with no margin for a delay on the KKH.
Where to stop overnight: the options

Naran has the widest choice of hotels on either route, but it is busy and more expensive on summer weekends and around Eid. Chilas is low and very hot in summer, with afternoon averages around 34°C from June to August, so ask for a room with working air conditioning.
Should you make it three days?
For many families, yes. The two-day plan asks for 10 to 11 hours in the car on day one and an early start, a mountain pass, a jeep ride and an uphill walk on day two. That is a lot for young children, older parents or a single driver.
A gentler plan:
- Day 1: Lahore to Islamabad, perhaps after work or school.
- Day 2: Islamabad to Naran, a comfortable six to seven hours.
- Day 3: Naran to the meadow, as in the two-day plan.

Flying from Lahore
There is no quick way from Lahore to the meadow by air. Flights to Gilgit, the nearest airport, have run from Lahore only with a connection through Islamabad, and the Islamabad to Gilgit leg operates only in good visibility, so cancellations are common. From Gilgit it is about an hour and a half to two hours by road to Raikot Bridge.

Driving tips for the trip from Lahore
- Service the car before you go. Brakes, tyres, coolant and the spare wheel matter far more on Babusar and the KKH than on the M-2.
- Top up your M-Tag before you leave Lahore, for the M-2, M-1 and Hazara Motorway.
- Share the driving. Two drivers make the first day far safer.
- Carry cash from Lahore or Islamabad, and top up in Chilas. You will need cash for the jeep, rooms and food at the meadow.
- Don't drive after dark north of Mansehra, on either route.
- Watch the weather in July and August. Monsoon rain brings landslides on the KKH and flash floods on the Babusar road. Check the road status the evening before each driving day.
- Leave the car at Raikot Bridge and agree the parking before you get into the jeep.
Is Fairy Meadows worth it from Lahore?
With a week, yes. Four or five days of the trip will be spent travelling, but two nights on the meadow facing Nanga Parbat are worth the drive for most people. With less time, the ratio of driving to meadow becomes hard to justify.
