The road from Swat to Gilgit runs from Mingora over the Shangla Pass to Besham, then north on the Karakoram Highway through Kohistan and Chilas. Adding the segment figures from route planners gives roughly 420 to 430 km, and the drive is best treated as a full day of 12 to 15 hours, or split with a night at Chilas. This is one of the harder road days in the north, and part of it is on a stretch the UK government advises against.

The route, section by section
- Mingora to Besham over Shangla Pass. The road climbs from the Swat valley through Khwazakhela and Alpuri and drops to the Indus at Besham. Older guidebook figures put Besham to Khwazakhela at about 69 km and around three hours. Our Besham to Swat guide covers this section in detail.
- Besham to Chilas. Here you join the Karakoram Highway and follow the Indus through Kohistan, passing Dasu and Sazin. Sources give roughly 200 to 228 km and anything from about 6.5 to 8 hours.
- Chilas to Gilgit. About 130 km, and usually two to three hours. The road is better, and our Chilas to Gilgit guide covers it.
The middle section is the one that decides your day. It is the most landslide-prone part of the whole highway, particularly in July and August and during spring snowmelt, and a blockage can add hours.
How long does it really take?
Route planners show about 11 to 12 hours, but they assume clear roads and no stops. Add the Shangla Pass, a slow and damaged road in places, plus prayer, fuel and meal stops and traffic behind trucks in Kohistan, and 12 to 15 hours is the more honest range.
Most people who do it prefer to break the journey. Chilas is the usual overnight stop, and it puts the easier drive to Gilgit in the morning. Do not plan to arrive in the dark: the Kohistan section is a poor place to be after sunset.
Road condition
- Shangla Pass: The Alpurai to Khwazakhela road is maintained by the NHA. In June 2026 local reports described broken surfaces and an unfinished rehabilitation project, and a landslide hit the road at Alpurai on 21 August 2026. It was also closed for five days by snow in late January 2026.
- Besham to Chilas: Paved but narrow in parts, with rockfall zones and heavy truck traffic. See our Kohistan road condition notes.

Is the Swat to Gilgit route safe?
Check this carefully before you go. The UK government's travel advice (updated 22 September 2026) advises against all travel to Swat and against all travel on the Karakoram Highway between Mansehra and Chilas, which includes Besham, Dasu and Sazin. A suicide bombing at the Kabal police station in Swat on 2 August 2026 killed 17 people.
Pakistani families and drivers still use this road every day, and Gilgit-Baltistan itself is not on the UK list. But this is not a route to take casually. Check local news and current police or district advice the day before, and ask locally about the road at Besham.
If you hold a foreign passport, your own government's advice may say not to go, and travelling against it can void your travel insurance. Overseas visitors should think hard about flying to Gilgit instead. Our Karakoram Highway safety guide has more.
A practical tip
Start at first light from Mingora and set a firm cut-off time at Besham or Chilas. If you reach either after mid-afternoon, stay the night rather than pushing on. Carry cash, water and a full tank, as there are long stretches with no fuel and patchy signal.
Is it worth doing by road?
If you have your own car and a driver used to mountain roads, it is a real way to link two very different valleys, and the Indus gorge is dramatic. If you are short of time, travelling with children or older parents, or nervous about the security picture, it is a hard day for little gain.
The alternative is to drive back to Islamabad from Swat by motorway and take the flight or the road from there.
