Besham to Swat is a drive of roughly 80 to 90 km, climbing from the Indus at Besham over the Shangla Pass to Alpuri and Khwazakhela and then on to Mingora. Route planners quote about an hour and a quarter, but the road is slow and in poor repair in places, so allow three to four hours. This is the mountain link between the Karakoram Highway and Swat, and the Shangla Pass is the part that matters.

The Shangla Pass route, step by step
Older road guides break the climb into three parts:
- Besham to Alpuri, about 35 km. A metalled two-way road that climbs steadily away from the Indus. Guides put it at about an hour.
- Alpuri to Shangla Top, about 7 km. The steepest and most winding part, again around half an hour.
- Shangla Top to Khwazakhela, about 27 km. A long descent into the Swat side, about an hour, followed by a short drive on to Mingora.
The route planner figures and the guidebook ones do not match, and the guidebook times were written for an older, worse road. Treat the distances as good to within a few kilometres and the times as a floor.
What is the road like now?
The honest answer is uneven. In June 2026 residents of Shangla described the Alpurai to Khwazakhela highway as full of potholes and broken surfaces, with sections that were dug up for a rehabilitation project and left unfinished. The National Highway Authority maintains it.
Two other events show how quickly conditions change. Heavy snow closed the road for five consecutive days in late January 2026, and a landslide sent boulders onto the road at Alpurai on 21 August 2026. If you are travelling in monsoon or winter, ask at Besham or Alpuri whether the road is clear before you commit.
Is it safe?
Check the current situation before you go. The UK government's travel advice (updated 22 September 2026) advises against all travel to Swat and against all but essential travel to Shangla. It also advises against all travel on the Karakoram Highway between Mansehra and Chilas, which includes Besham where this route starts. On 2 August 2026 a suicide bomber attacked the Kabal police station in Swat, killing 17.
Pakistani visitors and local traffic use the road daily. Check local news and current police advice before setting out, avoid travelling after dark, and note that foreign-passport holders should read their own government's advice, since travelling against it can void insurance. A practical tip
Leave Besham by mid-morning at the latest and aim to be over the top well before dusk. The descent into Khwazakhela is sharp, and fog or rain makes the damaged sections much harder to judge. Fill the tank at Besham, keep water in the car, and expect some stretches with weak signal.
Who this road suits
If you are already on the Karakoram Highway and want to reach Swat without going back to Islamabad, Shangla is the direct link and it saves a great deal of distance. It works best in dry weather with a confident driver and a sturdy car.
