Islamabad to Swat by Road: Motorway Route, Time and Stops

Islamabad to Swat by road is about 230 to 250 km to Mingora, and takes three and a half to four hours of driving, or four and a half to five with a meal stop. You take the M-1 towards Peshawar, turn north at the Karnal Sher Khan interchange onto the Swat Motorway (M-16), leave it at Chakdara, and drive the last 40 km up the N-95 to Mingora. Kalam is another 100 km beyond Mingora, and on the current road that means another three and a half to five hours.

The first two-thirds of the drive is fast, easy motorway. The last hour into Mingora is a busy two-lane road through market towns, and beyond Mingora the road to Kalam is slow and broken in places. This guide covers each stage, what the tolls cost in 2026, where to stop for fuel and food, and how to time the day.

The route, stage by stage

1. Islamabad to the Karnal Sher Khan interchange, about an hour. Join the M-1 motorway heading west towards Peshawar. The exit for Swat is the start of the Swat Motorway, also called the Swat Expressway.
2. The Swat Motorway to Chakdara, about an hour. The M-16 runs 81 km north, first across the plain of Mardan district and then up through the Malakand hills, where it passes through tunnels near Palai. It opened in June 2019 and cut the drive from Nowshera to Chakdara from about three hours to one. The road is four lanes and in good condition.
3. Chakdara to Mingora, about an hour. The motorway ends at Chakdara, at the mouth of the Swat valley. From here you follow the N-95, a two-lane national highway, up the valley through Barikot and past Udegram into Mingora. Expect rickshaws, tractors, bazaars and speed breakers.

That adds up to about three and a half hours of driving from central Islamabad. Traffic leaving Islamabad, a queue at a toll plaza and the slow entry into Mingora are what push it past four.

Work is under way on a second phase of the Swat Motorway, about 80 km from Chakdara up the valley to Fatehpur, below Madyan. Construction started in March 2026, and until it is finished the N-95 is the only road beyond Chakdara.

How long does the drive really take?

On a clear weekday morning, three and a half to four hours to Mingora is realistic. A typical day looks like this:

1. Leave Islamabad at 7 am. The M-1 is quiet at this hour.
2. Swat Motorway by about 8 am. Stop at the Katlang service area if you need tea or fuel.
3. Chakdara by about 9 am. The motorway ends and the slow part begins.
4. Mingora by 10 to 10.30 am, in time for a late breakfast and a full afternoon.

Allow more time in these situations:

• Friday evening and Saturday morning in summer, when half of Islamabad and Peshawar seem to be heading the same way.
• Eid and long weekends, when the stretch from Chakdara to Mingora can back up for hours. Leave before dawn or travel on the second or third day of the holiday.
• Sunday afternoon on the way home, when the toll plazas on the M-1 back into Islamabad queue up.

If you are going on to Kalam

From Mingora the N-95 continues north through Khwazakhela, Madyan and Bahrain to Kalam. It is about 100 km, but stretches between Madyan and Kalam were badly damaged by the 2022 floods and, as of mid-2026, still had not been properly rebuilt. Plan on three and a half to five hours, more after rain.

That makes Islamabad to Kalam a seven to nine hour day. It is manageable if you leave by 5 or 6 am, so that you drive the broken road above Bahrain in daylight. Arriving after dark is the thing to avoid. With children, or if you are leaving Islamabad after breakfast, it is far better to sleep in Mingora or Madyan and drive up to Kalam fresh the next morning.

If you are going to Malam Jabba

Malam Jabba is about 40 km from Mingora. Follow the Kalam road north out of town to Manglor and turn right; from there a paved mountain road climbs to the resort. Allow an hour to an hour and a half from Mingora, and more after winter snow, when a four-by-four or chains are advisable for the final climb.

Tolls and the M-Tag

In 2026 you pay two sets of tolls between Islamabad and Swat:

• The M-1 is charged by distance. The full Islamabad to Peshawar run costs a car PKR 700 at the rates that took effect in July 2026, and you pay less because you leave the motorway before Peshawar.
• The Swat Motorway toll for a car is PKR 270. In August 2026 the provincial government proposed raising this by 20 per cent, to PKR 324.

Rates change at least once a year, so check the National Highway Authority's current motorway toll rates before you set off.

Fuel and food stops

Fuel is easy on this route. The M-1 has service areas in both directions, with fuel and food, and the Swat Motorway has its main service area at Katlang, between the Bakhshali and Palai interchanges. There are fuel stations at Chakdara and along the road to Mingora, and Mingora itself has plenty.

For food:

• On the motorway, the service areas are the quickest option for a meal, tea and a toilet stop.
• At Chakdara and Barikot, roadside restaurants serve karahi, daal and tea, and are busy from breakfast onwards.
• In Mingora, there is far more choice. It is the best place in the valley to eat, and a good place for lunch if you are going on to Kalam or Malam Jabba.

If you are heading up the valley, fill the tank in Mingora. There are fuel stations further up, but queues are long on busy days and it is simpler to leave with a full tank.

What to see on the way

The drive is short enough that you can make a few stops without losing the day:

• The Shingardar stupa stands right beside the road at Ghalegay, about 14 km short of Mingora. It takes ten minutes to stop, stretch and look.
• Udegram, a few kilometres before Mingora, has the hilltop ruins known as Raja Gira's castle and, below them, a mosque founded in 1048–49 CE under the Ghaznavids, one of the oldest in northern Pakistan. It is a steep climb to the castle, so leave it for a day when you have an hour or two.
• The Swat Museum and Butkara are in Saidu Sharif, next to Mingora, and make a good first afternoon.

Driving tips for the Swat road

• Treat the Swat Motorway as a motorway, including the tunnels: keep your headlights on, keep to your lane and don't stop inside.
• Slow down after Chakdara. The N-95 runs through towns and villages the whole way, with speed breakers, turning traffic and children crossing.
• Avoid night driving above Mingora. The broken sections above Madyan and the landslide-prone stretch around Bahrain are hard to read in the dark.
• Watch the weather in the monsoon. Heavy rain can block the road above Bahrain with landslides or flash floods, as happened at Mankiyal in September 2026. Our guide to the best time to visit Swat covers the risky months.
• Carry your CNIC and expect police checkpoints between Chakdara and Mingora and further up the valley. Foreign nationals should carry their passport and visa.

Checkpoints and security in 2026

Swat has had a difficult year. Militants were reported in the hills of Matta and Charbagh in the summer of 2026, and on 2 August a suicide bombing at a peace rally in Kabal, across the river from Mingora, killed 17 people. The UK government advises its nationals against all travel to Swat. The main road remains in daily use by Swatis and domestic tourists, but check the news before you leave, travel in daylight and follow what you are told at checkpoints.

Drive yourself, hire a driver or take a coach?

Drive yourself if you are comfortable with busy two-lane roads and plan to stay three days or more. A car makes day trips to Malam Jabba, Madyan and the Buddhist sites easy. A normal sedan is fine to Mingora and Malam Jabba, and to Kalam in dry weather if driven gently.

Hire a car with a driver if nobody wants to drive the N-95, or if Kalam is on the plan. A driver who knows the road above Bahrain is worth a lot after rain. Ask for a price that includes fuel, tolls and the driver's food and room, so there are no surprises.

Take a coach if you are travelling alone or on a budget. Several intercity operators run from Rawalpindi and Islamabad to Mingora, and from there local vans run up the valley. Fares and timings change often, so check with the operator.
