The Swat to Naran distance is about 300 km by the shorter mountain route, from Mingora over the Shangla Pass to Besham, down the Karakoram Highway to Mansehra and up the Kaghan valley to Naran. The easier motorway route through Chakdara, the Swat Expressway and the Hazara Motorway is about 390 km. Route planners give roughly four to five hours for either, but in practice you should allow a full day of seven to nine hours.

There is no direct road across the mountains between the two valleys, so every option goes south and then north again. This guide covers both routes in each direction, the related drives from Murree, Nathia Gali and Muzaffarabad to Swat, when the roads close, and which way suits which kind of trip.

Distances are from OpenStreetMap routing between town centres (October 2026). Expect a few kilometres either way depending on where you start.

How far is Swat from Naran by each route?

About 300 km via the Shangla Pass and Besham, or about 390 km via the Swat Expressway, M-1 and Hazara Motorway (M-15) to Mansehra. Both routes meet at Mansehra and finish on the N-15 up the Kaghan valley, and the figures are the same in reverse. The 90 km difference matters less than it looks, because the motorway kilometres are fast and the Shangla kilometres are slow.

Route 1: Swat to Naran via Shangla and Besham

This is the shortest line on the map.

  1. Mingora to Besham, about 83 km. Up the valley to Khwazakhela, then the N-90 over the Shangla Pass through Alpuri and down to the Indus at Besham. This is the slowest section, with sharp bends and broken surfaces in places. Our Besham to Swat guide covers it in detail.
  2. Besham to Mansehra, roughly 100 km. South on the Karakoram Highway past Thakot and Battagram, then onto the Hazara Motorway into Mansehra.
  3. Mansehra to Naran, about 120 km. The N-15 through Balakot and Kaghan. In the summer season this stretch is often the slowest part of the whole day because of tourist traffic. The Balakot to Naran guide has the stops along the way.

OpenStreetMap routing puts the whole drive at about four hours, which is not realistic. Allow three to four hours for the Shangla section alone and seven to nine hours door to door.

Route 2: Swat to Naran via the motorways and Mansehra

  1. Mingora to Chakdara, about 40 km. Down the valley on the N-95.
  2. Chakdara to Mansehra, about 229 km. The Swat Expressway south to the M-1, east on the M-1 to the Hazara Motorway, then north to Mansehra.
  3. Mansehra to Naran, about 120 km. The same N-15 climb as Route 1.

The route planner time is about four hours and forty minutes. With a meal stop, fuel and the Kaghan valley traffic, plan on seven to eight and a half hours. Service areas, fuel and phone signal are reliable on the motorways, which makes this the calmer drive.

How far is Murree from Swat?

Murree to Swat (Mingora) is about 290 km. The quickest way is down to Islamabad on the Murree Expressway, west on the M-1 and north on the Swat Expressway to Chakdara, then up the N-95 to Mingora. Route planners give about three and a half hours; with the descent from Murree and the Mingora traffic, five to six hours is more realistic.

Swat to Nathia Gali distance

Nathia Gali to Swat is about 280 km. The road runs down to Abbottabad, joins the Hazara Motorway at Havelian, then follows the M-1 and the Swat Expressway to Chakdara and Mingora. It is slightly shorter than the Murree route and the route planner time is again about three and a half hours. Allow five to six hours, more if the Galiyat road is busy on a weekend.

How far is Muzaffarabad from Swat?

There are two choices, and they differ more than the Naran routes do.

  • Via Mansehra, Thakot, Besham and Shangla: about 236 km. Garhi Habibullah to Mansehra, the Hazara Motorway to Thakot, the Karakoram Highway to Besham and the N-90 over Shangla to Mingora. It is the shortest on paper, but the Shangla section is slow; allow six to seven hours.
  • Via Mansehra and the motorways: about 330 km. From Mansehra head south on the Hazara Motorway to the M-1 and then up the Swat Expressway. It is roughly 90 km longer but easier going. Allow five and a half to six and a half hours.

When are these roads closed?

The Kaghan road to Naran closes in winter. In December 2025 the road from Palderan in the Kaghan valley up to Babusar Top was shut to all traffic, and The News reported in April 2026 that traffic between Naran and the rest of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had been suspended since November 2025, for nearly six months. In practice, a drive to Naran makes sense from about May to early November. Check our guide to whether the Naran road is open or closed before you set off in spring or late autumn.

The Shangla Pass can close after heavy snow. In late January 2026 the Besham to Swat road stayed closed for more than 48 hours, with nearly four feet of snow reported at Shangla Top (The News). In winter, take the motorway route.

Monsoon landslides affect both valleys. From July to September, rain can block the N-15 between Balakot and Naran and the N-90 over Shangla for hours at a time. Start early and ask locally before committing to a mountain section late in the day.

Is the Swat to Naran route safe?

Check the current situation before you go. The UK government's travel advice (updated 22 September 2026) advises against all travel to Swat and against all but essential travel to Shangla. It also advises against all travel on the Karakoram Highway between Mansehra and Chilas, which includes Battagram and Besham on Route 1. The Mansehra to Naran road itself is not listed. On 2 August 2026 a suicide bomber attacked the Kabal police station in Swat during a peace rally, killing 17.

For Muzaffarabad, the same advice covers all but essential travel to Azad Kashmir away from the Line of Control, and AJK saw deadly protests and long phone and internet shutdowns from June 2026.

Pakistani visitors still travel on all these roads, and local traffic uses them daily. Check local news and current police advice before setting out, and avoid driving the mountain sections after dark. Foreign-passport holders should read their own government's advice, because travelling against it can void travel insurance. Our Swat safety guide has more detail.

Which route should you take?

Take the motorway route if you are travelling with children or older relatives, driving in winter or rain, arriving late, or not used to mountain roads. It is longer but predictable, and it avoids the stretch of the Karakoram Highway named in the UK advice.

Consider Shangla if you are a confident driver in a sturdy car, in dry weather and daylight. It saves distance but not much time.

Break the drive if you can. Mansehra and Balakot both make sensible overnight stops, which turns a tiring day into two easy ones and puts you on the Kaghan road fresh in the morning.

Many people find that combining Swat and Naran in one short trip spends too much time in the car. With a week or more it works well as a loop; with less, our Swat versus Naran comparison can help you pick one. For road conditions and planning across the north, see the Pakistan travel guide.
