The Abbottabad to Malam Jabba distance is about 275 to 285 km by road, whichever of the two main routes you take: about 273 km over the Shangla Pass via Thakot, Besham and Khwazakhela, or about 286 km on the Hazara and Swat motorways via Chakdara and Mingora. A link road from Shangla Top straight to Malam Jabba cuts the first route to about 205 km, if it is open and you are comfortable on narrow mountain roads.

The distances are close, but the drives are not. One is mostly motorway with a mountain road only at the end; the other is mountain road almost from Mansehra onwards. This guide compares them leg by leg, covers winter snow on the last climb, and explains the security advice that applies to both.

Distances are from central Abbottabad to the Malam Jabba hotel area, worked out with OSRM route data. Expect your trip meter to differ by a few kilometres.

Route 1: Thakot, Besham and the Shangla Pass

This is the mountain route, heading north from Abbottabad and crossing into Swat over the Shangla Pass.

LegDistanceRoad
Abbottabad to ThakotAbout 109 kmHazara Motorway (M-15) to its northern end
Thakot to BeshamAbout 31 kmKarakoram Highway along the Indus
Besham to Shangla TopAbout 46 kmN-90, climbing through Alpuri
Shangla Top to KhwazakhelaAbout 43 kmN-90, descending into the Swat valley
Khwazakhela to ManglawarAbout 16 kmN-95 down the Swat valley
Manglawar to Malam JabbaAbout 28.5 kmMalam Jabba road, steep and winding

The Hazara Motorway makes the first part quick. After Thakot it is mountain road the rest of the way: the Karakoram Highway to Besham, then a long climb on the N-90 to Shangla Top, at about 2,100 metres, and down the other side to Khwazakhela. From there you run down the Swat valley to Manglawar and turn uphill for Malam Jabba.

OpenStreetMap and OSRM show a link road from near Shangla Top across to Malam Jabba, about 19 km, which saves the whole loop through Khwazakhela and Manglawar and brings the trip down to about 205 km. Local reports suggest it has been improved in recent years, but we have not been able to confirm its current condition from an official source. Ask in Besham or at Shangla Top before taking it, use it only in dry weather, and do not attempt it after snow.

Route 2: the motorways via Chakdara and Mingora

This is the longer-looking but easier route, heading south first and reaching Swat from the plains.

LegDistanceRoad
Abbottabad to ChakdaraAbout 206 kmHazara Motorway south to Hasan Abdal, the M-1 west, then the Swat Motorway (M-16)
Chakdara to MingoraAbout 40 kmN-95 through Barikot
Mingora to ManglawarAbout 12 kmN-95 towards Kalam
Manglawar to Malam JabbaAbout 28.5 kmMalam Jabba road

About 200 km of this is motorway, with service areas, fuel and toilets. The motorway's completed first phase ends at Chakdara, so from there it is ordinary road through Barikot and the traffic of Mingora. Our Mingora to Malam Jabba guide covers the last climb from the valley floor in detail.

Which route should you take?

For most families, take the motorways. The distance is nearly the same, but the driving is far less tiring, there are more places to stop, and the only mountain road is the final hour up from Manglawar. It is also the safer choice from December to March, when the Shangla Pass can get snow.

Take the Shangla route if you are already north of Mansehra, want to see the Indus gorge and the Shangla forests, or plan to use the Shangla Top link road in summer. Expect slow going: narrow bends, trucks on the Karakoram Highway and broken patches after the monsoon.

A good compromise on a longer trip is to go one way and return the other. Our Besham to Swat guide covers the Shangla road in more detail.

OSRM's free-flow estimates are about four hours for either main route. Our allowances in the table above are longer because they include a meal, a fuel stop and normal traffic in Mansehra, Besham and Mingora.

What is the last climb like in winter?

Malam Jabba is a ski resort, and from about December to February the road up from Manglawar can be white for days after a storm. The shaded bends stay icy long after the sun has cleared the open stretches. On the Shangla route, the pass itself can also get snow.

If you are driving up in winter:

  1. Check before you set off. Ring your hotel at the top and ask whether the road is open and what cars are managing it.
  2. Carry snow chains that fit your tyres, and fit them before the steep section if the road is white.
  3. Drive up in daylight and aim to arrive by mid-afternoon, before the road refreezes.
  4. Keep the tank full and carry water, food and warm clothes in the car.
  5. If the police or district administration close the road, turn back.

Our Malam Jabba in winter guide covers the ski season, what is open and what to wear.

Is the drive from Abbottabad to Malam Jabba safe?

Check the current situation before you go, because both routes pass through areas covered by travel warnings. On 2 August 2026 a suicide bomber attacked the Kabal police station in Swat during a peace rally, killing 17 people. The UK government's travel advice, updated on 22 September 2026, advises against all travel to Swat.

The same advice covers the approaches:

  • Route 1 uses the Karakoram Highway between Mansehra and Chilas, through Thakot and Besham, where the UK advises against all travel, and crosses Shangla, where it advises against all but essential travel. In March 2024 a suicide attack near Besham killed five Chinese engineers and their Pakistani driver.
  • Route 2 passes through Swabi, Nowshera, Mardan and Malakand districts on the motorway, where the UK advises against all but essential travel.

Pakistani families still travel to Malam Jabba, and the resort and hotels operate. Check local news and current police advice on the morning you leave, avoid driving after dark, carry your CNIC and follow instructions at checkpoints. If you hold a foreign passport, read your own government's advice first: travelling against it can void your travel insurance. Our guide on whether Swat is safe for tourists has more.

Is Malam Jabba worth the drive from Abbottabad?

In winter, for snow and the ski slope, yes, as long as you plan a night at the top rather than a same-day return. Over 270 km each way is too much for a day trip on mountain roads.

In summer, think about what you want. If it is cool air, forest and a chairlift, the Galiyat are an hour or so from Abbottabad and need none of this driving. If you are heading into Swat anyway for Kalam or Mahodand, Malam Jabba fits neatly into the trip from Manglawar. For general road advice and packing for the north, see our travel guide.
