How far is Shogran from Nathia Gali?
About 125 km by road, worked out with OSRM route data from the centre of Nathia Gali to Shogran village. Your trip meter will differ by a few kilometres depending on where you start and which road you take through Abbottabad. The legs break down like this:
| Leg | Distance | What the road is like |
|---|---|---|
| Nathia Gali to Abbottabad | About 31 to 36 km | Narrow, winding descent through Bagnotar and Harnoi |
| Abbottabad to Mansehra | About 25 km | Hazara Motorway or the old N-35 highway |
| Mansehra to Balakot | About 40 km | Ordinary two-lane N-15, slow through the towns |
| Balakot to Kiwai | About 23 km | N-15 along the Kunhar river |
| Kiwai to Shogran | About 7.5 km | Steep, narrow climb; jeep or a strong car in dry weather |
Mapping apps quote a little over two hours for the whole drive. That assumes empty roads and ignores the Galiyat bends and the Mansehra and Balakot bazaars, so it is not a figure to plan a family day around.
Which way do you leave Nathia Gali?
North, towards Abbottabad. Do not go back through Murree: that road heads south towards Islamabad and adds a long detour.
The road from Nathia Gali down to Abbottabad drops about 1,100 metres through pine forest, with tight bends above Harnoi and slow trucks and wagons on the lower stretches. Allow an hour to an hour and a half, and go easy on the brakes on the way down. Our Abbottabad to Nathia Gali guide describes this road in the uphill direction, stage by stage.
Abbottabad to Balakot: the quick middle section
At the bottom you join the main road on the north-eastern side of Abbottabad. From here you have two ways to Mansehra:
- The Hazara Motorway (M-15). Faster and calmer, with fewer junctions. Leave it at Mansehra for Balakot.
- The old highway through the city. Useful if you want lunch, fuel or an ATM in Abbottabad, but slow at school and office times.
At Mansehra, follow the signs for Balakot and Naran onto the N-15. Do not carry on north on the motorway past Mansehra: it goes to Thakot and the Karakoram Highway, a different trip on a stretch the UK travel advice warns against.
Mansehra to Balakot is about 40 km and usually takes about an hour, with the town bazaars as the slow points. Balakot is the last big town, so fill the tank and draw cash here if you did not in Abbottabad.
Kiwai to Shogran: the jeep or your own car?
Kiwai is a roadside village on the N-15, about 23 km beyond Balakot, with a waterfall beside the road and the jeep stand for Shogran and Siri Paye. The side road climbs about 7.5 km to Shogran, gaining roughly 850 metres.
You have two choices:
- Park at Kiwai and take a local jeep. This is what most families do, and the only sensible choice in rain, after snow or with a low-slung car. Jeep fares are fixed by the local administration and revised from season to season; our Shogran jeep fare guide has the current rates and how waiting time works.
- Drive your own car up. Possible in dry summer weather in a car with good ground clearance and a driver used to steep mountain roads. If in doubt, take the jeep.
Our guide to reaching Shogran goes into the Kiwai climb and public transport options in more detail.
How long does the drive really take?
A realistic day from Nathia Gali, leaving after breakfast:
- 9:00 am leave Nathia Gali.
- About 10:30 am reach Abbottabad. Tea, fuel or shopping if needed.
- About 11:30 am pass Mansehra.
- About 12:30 pm reach Balakot. Lunch here or at Kiwai.
- About 1:30 pm at Kiwai, switching to a jeep.
- About 2:15 pm in Shogran, with the afternoon free.
That is our planning allowance for a normal weekday, not a promise. On summer weekends and Eid holidays the Mansehra to Kiwai stretch can add an hour or more, so leave earlier rather than later.
Going the other way, Shogran to Nathia Gali, start the jeep descent by mid-morning so you are climbing the Galiyat road in daylight. The last hour up from Harnoi is narrow and dark under the trees after sunset.
When does this combination work, and when doesn't it?
May and June are the easy months. Both roads are open, the weather is settled and the Kiwai climb is dry.
July to mid-September is the monsoon. Heavy rain brings landslides onto both the Galiyat road and the N-15, and the Kiwai road turns muddy. It can still be done, but drive early in the day, check for road closures the evening before and keep a spare day.
Late September and October are often the best of all: clear skies, dry roads and fewer people.
December to March is a different matter. Snow can block the Kiwai climb and make the Galiyat road icy, and pairing the two places in winter means two snow roads in one trip. See our Shogran in winter guide before planning one.
Is it worth combining Nathia Gali and Shogran?
For a four or five day trip from Islamabad or Lahore, yes. A sensible loop is Islamabad to Nathia Gali through Murree (about 87 km), a night or two in the Galiyat, then on to Shogran and back to Islamabad on the motorway, about 194 km from Shogran. That way you only drive the Galiyat road once.
It is a poor fit for a two-day weekend. You would spend most of the second day on the road and see little of either place. If you only have two days, pick one; our Shogran vs Nathia Gali comparison helps you choose. For general road and packing advice for the north, see our travel guide.
