Naran in August: Monsoon Weather, Crowds and Road Risk

Naran in August is green, crowded and at real risk of rain. Everything in the valley is normally open, the days are cool, and the high lakes are at their most accessible, but August sits in the middle of the monsoon, when cloudbursts and landslides can close the road or the lake track at short notice. Most trips go through without trouble. The point of planning for August is that when trouble does come, it can leave you stuck for days.

What is the weather like in Naran in August?

Climate averages for Naran, at 2,409 metres, give a daytime high of about 16.5°C and a night low of about 7°C for August, with around 107 mm of rain. Only July, at about 102 mm, and April come close. Sunny spells feel warmer than the numbers, and nights at the lakes are cold.

Rain in the mountains is rarely a steady drizzle. It tends to arrive as afternoon downpours that can be heavy in a narrow catchment, and it is the sudden ones, not the long grey spells, that cause flash floods in side streams. Mornings are often the clearest part of the day, so plan lake visits early.

What has gone wrong in recent Augusts?

Recent years are the best guide to the risk, and they are a reason for planning rather than a reason to stay away.

• Late July and early August 2024: flash floods in the Manoor valley destroyed the bridge at Mahandri and cut the Mansehra to Naran road. Boulders also blocked the Kunhar River. Tourists were stranded in the upper valley for days, and Dawn reported most were later evacuated in convoys.
• 30 July 2026: a cloudburst sent flash floods down onto the road from Naran to Saif ul Malook and washed away part of it. About 200 jeeps carrying tourists were stranded until visitors were evacuated. The Mansehra administration ordered the Kaghan Development Authority to restore the road urgently.
• Early August 2026: access to the lake was banned for a week as a precaution during the monsoon. It reopened on 7 August with new rules: visitors may travel between 9:30 am and 4 pm, police enforce those hours, and police can close the road at once if weather worsens.

The lesson is not that Naran is unsafe in August. It is that the lake and the road can close with little warning, and your plan should assume that.

Will the road and lake be open?

Usually, yes. The main road from Balakot is normally open, but landslides on it are common in monsoon months and are cleared quickly in most cases, sometimes within hours and sometimes longer. For the lake, expect controlled hours in August rather than open access. If you plan a sunrise there, note that the 2026 rules did not allow travel before 9:30 am. How crowded is Naran in August?

Very busy. Families travel through the summer break, and the 14 August holiday is a common travel date. Balakot to Naran slows to a crawl at peak times and the bazaar is congested, with parking inside the bazaar banned under a 2026 traffic order. Hotels fill on weekends and rates rise, so book early and avoid arriving on a Friday night if you can help it.

Weekdays are far easier. A Tuesday to Thursday trip in August often feels like a different valley from the same trip on a weekend.

If the road is cut behind you

When the Mahandri bridge went in 2024, the road back towards Mansehra was gone and the only other way out of the upper valley was north over Babusar Top to Chilas. That route is long and only open in summer, so do not count on it as a plan. It also joins the Karakoram Highway, and the UK government advises against travel on the KKH between Mansehra and Chilas, so foreign-passport holders in particular should not treat it as a casual detour.

The practical answer is to keep your hotel booking flexible, stay put if told to, and avoid pushing into the upper valley (Batakundi, Lalazar, Babusar) on days when heavy rain is forecast. Being stuck in a hotel in Naran is uncomfortable; being caught on a washed-out track is not.

How to plan a trip around the monsoon

1. Check the forecast for Mansehra and Naran the day before, and again in the morning.
2. Build in a spare day. If a closure hits on your departure day, you can wait rather than take a risk on a wet road.
3. Travel by day. Never drive the Balakot to Naran road in heavy rain or after dark in the monsoon.
4. Leave the lake for the clearest morning. If it is closed or the forecast is bad, skip it rather than push.
5. Keep flexible bookings where you can, and carry enough cash and any regular medicine for a couple of extra days, since a cut road can leave you longer than planned.
6. Follow local instructions. If the police or KDA say leave, leave.

Is August a good time for you?

It suits travellers who can be flexible, want the valley fully open and do not mind cool wet weather. It is a poor fit if you have a fixed return date, are travelling with very young or elderly relatives who cannot cope with a delay, or want a quiet trip. If that describes you, September usually has calmer weather, and the crowds thin after mid-month.
