Multan to Swat is roughly 750 to 870 km by road, depending on the route and the source, and 10 to 15 hours of driving. Most of it is motorway: the M-4 north from Multan to Pindi Bhattian, the M-2 to Islamabad, the M-1 towards Peshawar and then the Swat Motorway (M-16). It can be done in a day, but a night in Islamabad makes it a far better trip.

The route
- M-4 north from Multan. The Pindi Bhattian to Multan motorway is 309 km long and passes Khanewal, Abdul Hakeem, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Gojra and Faisalabad. The last sections opened in 2019.
- M-2 from Pindi Bhattian to Islamabad. The Lahore to Islamabad motorway, which you join near Pindi Bhattian.
- M-1 towards Peshawar. Leave at the Karnal Sher Khan interchange.
- Swat Motorway (M-16) to Chakdara. Then the N-45 for about 40 km to Mingora.
The distance varies by source because it depends on where in Swat you finish and on how each planner routes you through Islamabad. Use 750 to 870 km as the range and be more cautious about the time than the distance.
How long will it take?
Rome2Rio says about 10.5 hours, another source says 14 to 15. In practice, a drive of 11 to 13 hours with stops is realistic, and more at weekends or in rain. The last part, from the M-1 into the Swat valley, is where a tired driver is most at risk.
We would not recommend one long day for a family. Two shorter days cost little extra: drive from Multan to Islamabad or Rawalpindi on the first day, then take the three-hour run to Swat the next morning. A two-day plan
- Day 1: Leave Multan early, follow the M-4 and M-2, and stop for lunch at a motorway service area. Reach Islamabad in the afternoon and stay the night.
- Day 2: Set off by 7 am on the M-1 and M-16, reach Mingora by late morning and carry on to your hotel in Madyan, Kalam or Malam Jabba. Our Swat Motorway guide covers the last section.

Is Swat safe to travel to?
Check the current situation before you go. The UK government's travel advice (updated 22 September 2026) advises against all travel to Swat and against all but essential travel to Malakand and Mardan. A suicide bomber attacked the Kabal police station in Swat on 2 August 2026, killing 17.

Is it worth driving from Multan?
If you have your own car and want to take luggage and family, yes, with the overnight stop. If you are travelling alone or with a small group, the alternative is a bus or flight to Islamabad and a hire car on.
