Multan to Murree is roughly 550 to 570 kilometres by road, and the sensible route is by motorway: the M-4 north from Multan to Pindi Bhattian, the M-2 on to Islamabad, then the Murree Expressway up into the hills. Journey planners put the drive at about seven to seven and a half hours without stops, so with fuel, prayers and a meal most families should plan on nine to ten hours and a night at the end, not a same-day return.
This guide covers the route leg by leg, the toll costs revised in July 2026, where to break the drive, and what to do about winter fog.

What is the route from Multan to Murree?
- M-4, Multan to Pindi Bhattian (about 309 km). The M-4 starts at the M-5 interchange near Multan and runs through Khanewal, Abdul Hakeem, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Gojra and Faisalabad, finishing at its junction with the M-2 at Pindi Bhattian. It was completed in 2019. At Abdul Hakeem it also meets the M-3.
- M-2, Pindi Bhattian to Islamabad. Turn north on the M-2, which is six lanes and crosses the Salt Range on its way to Islamabad, resurfaced between 2014 and 2016. It has service areas with fuel, food and mosques on both sides.
- Islamabad to Murree (about 64 km). From Islamabad, take the Murree Expressway, which runs through Bhara Kahu towards Murree and typically takes 1.2 to 2 hours depending on traffic. See our Islamabad to Murree guide and the Murree Expressway guide.
Murree sits at about 2,291 metres, so the last hour is a real climb. Anyone prone to travel sickness should have a plan for the curves.
How long does it really take?
Planners say about seven hours for the whole run. A realistic day looks like this: leave Multan at 6 or 7 am, reach the M-2 by late morning, stop for lunch at a service area, be in Islamabad by mid-afternoon and Murree by evening. That is a long day with children or older parents.
Two things slow people most. One is the Murree Expressway on Friday evenings and weekends in season, when the last stretch slows down. The other is fog in winter, covered below.
Tolls from Multan to Murree in 2026
NHA revised toll rates from 10 July 2026. For a car:
- M-4 (Pindi Bhattian to Multan): Rs 1,350 for the full length.
- M-2: Rs 1,430 for the whole Lahore to Islamabad motorway as of 5 July 2026. You travel only the Pindi Bhattian to Islamabad section, so you pay a smaller share; read the amount at the toll plaza.
- Murree Expressway (E-75): Rs 300.
Rates change each year, and the M-4 figure applies to the full route, so a shorter trip costs less. Check your M-Tag balance before leaving, since toll plazas can be slow without it.
Where to stop
- Faisalabad area, around the middle of the M-4: a natural fuel and meal break near the M-4 exits.
- M-2 service areas: these have fuel, food, mosques and washrooms. They are the most reliable stops on the northern half of the journey.
- Islamabad: if the weather or the hour looks bad, sleep in Islamabad and drive up in the morning rather than climbing at night. Our Murree travel tips cover hotels and parking.
Winter fog on the motorways
In early January 2026, dense fog closed sections of the M-2 and the M-4, including on the Faisalabad to Multan stretch, and the Motorway Police said 10 am to 6 pm was the safer travel window. If you are driving between December and February, avoid starting before dawn, keep fog lights on, and be ready to wait at an exit. Check the NHMP's advisories before leaving and keep a flexible plan.
Snow on the Murree road is a separate issue. Most heavy falls come between late February and early March per Wikipedia, and the expressway can be closed or restricted. See Murree snowfall for what to expect.
Should you drive, or take another way?
Driving suits families who want their own car in Murree. A tired driver on seven hours of motorway is the main risk, so share the driving. If you do not want that, it is simpler to travel to Islamabad by bus or rail and take a vehicle from there, an option we cannot price here because fares change.
