The quickest way from Karachi to Swat is to fly to Islamabad, which takes about two hours, and then drive or take a coach to Mingora in three and a half to four hours more. Leave Karachi on a morning flight and you can be in Mingora for dinner. The train to Rawalpindi takes 22 to 27 hours before the same coach ride, direct coaches take 20 hours or more, and driving the whole way is about 1,650 km, which most families spread over three days.
There are no scheduled flights to Swat's own airport at Saidu Sharif, so every option ends with a road journey up the Swat Motorway. This guide compares the four ways of doing the trip on time and cost, and says which suits whom.

Flying: Karachi to Islamabad, then the road
Karachi to Islamabad is one of the busiest routes in the country. PIA, Airblue, AirSial and Fly Jinnah all fly it, and the flight takes about two hours.
In September 2026, one-way fares on the cheaper airlines started at around PKR 15,000 when booked ahead. They rise in the last days before a flight and sharply at Eid and the start of the school holidays. Some low-cost fares don't include a checked bag, so compare the full price for your luggage.
Islamabad's airport is about 25 km south-west of the city, next to the junction of the M-1 and M-2 motorways. That is useful: if you are driving on to Swat, you are on the M-1 almost as soon as you leave the airport, without going into the city. From there:
- By hired car or taxi: straight up the M-1 and the Swat Motorway to Mingora, a little under the three and a half to four hours it takes from central Islamabad. Our Islamabad to Swat road guide covers the route.
- By coach: take a taxi to the Daewoo terminal in Rawalpindi and catch a coach to Mingora, about PKR 1,100 to 1,200 in 2026. Our guide to the Swat bus service has the terminals and alternatives.
A realistic day: a 7 am flight from Karachi, landing around 9; on the road or at the Daewoo terminal by 10.30; in Mingora by mid-afternoon.
What about Peshawar?
PIA, AirSial and Fly Jinnah fly from Karachi to Peshawar, and Peshawar is about 170 km from Mingora, roughly three hours by road. On a map it looks like the better choice. In practice it rarely is: there are far fewer flights than to Islamabad, fares are usually no cheaper, and the UK government advises against all travel to Peshawar. Use it only if the Islamabad flights are full on your dates.
And Swat's own airport?
Saidu Sharif airport, a few kilometres from Mingora, had no passenger flights for 17 years until PIA restarted a service from Islamabad in March 2021. It was suspended within months, because passengers preferred the new motorway. Don't plan around a flight to Swat unless an airline is actually selling one.
The train: Karachi to Rawalpindi or Islamabad
Several Pakistan Railways trains run from Karachi up the main line:
- Green Line, from Karachi Cantonment to Islamabad's Margalla station, in about 22 to 24 hours. It leaves Karachi late in the evening and arrives the following evening.
- Tezgam, from Karachi to Rawalpindi, in about 26 to 27 hours.
- Awam Express and Khyber Mail, which run on to Peshawar and call at Rawalpindi on the way.
Because the trains arrive in the evening, the realistic plan is a night in Rawalpindi or Islamabad and a morning coach to Mingora. Door to door, that is about a day and a half.
Economy seats cost a few thousand rupees or less, a small fraction of a flight, while AC sleeper and business berths cost considerably more. Fares change often, so check the current price for your class and date with Pakistan Railways before you book. The train makes sense if you enjoy it, or for students and solo travellers watching every rupee. For a family on a week's holiday, it uses up two days each way.
Direct coaches from Karachi
A few companies, including Faisal Movers and Swat-based operators, run coaches from Karachi straight to Mingora. It is more than 1,500 km and at least 20 hours in one seat, usually overnight and through most of the next day.
It is the simplest cheap option, but an exhausting way to start a holiday. If you can, break it in Rawalpindi and take one of the more frequent coaches for the last leg.
Driving from Karachi to Swat
The drive is about 1,650 to 1,700 km to Mingora, and more than 20 hours at the wheel. The route:
- The M-9 to Hyderabad.
- The N-5 or the N-55 Indus Highway to Sukkur. The Hyderabad to Sukkur motorway, the M-6, has not been built yet; construction was expected to begin in late 2026.
- The M-5 from Sukkur to Multan.
- The M-4 from Multan to Pindi Bhattian, via Faisalabad.
- The M-2 to Islamabad, then the M-1 and the Swat Motorway to Chakdara, and the N-95 to Mingora.
Most families split it over three days: Karachi to Multan or thereabouts, on to Islamabad, and Islamabad to Swat. That means four or five nights on the road for the round trip before you count any nights in Swat.
What it costs. At late-September 2026 prices of around PKR 385 to 390 a litre, a car that manages 12 km to the litre uses about 140 litres each way, roughly PKR 54,000. Tolls add several thousand rupees more: the M-5 and M-4 alone cost a car PKR 2,850 at the rates from July 2026, before the M-9, M-2, M-1 and Swat Motorway. And the M-Tag has been compulsory on NHA motorways since June 2026.
Safety. Drive the Sindh highways in daylight, and keep in mind that the UK government advises against all but essential travel to Sindh north of Nawabshah, which this route passes through. Its advice on Swat itself is covered in our guide on whether Swat is safe for tourists.
Time and cost side by side
For a trip of a week, with four nights in Swat, the options compare roughly like this. These are our own calculations from 2026 fares and fuel prices, not quotes.

For a couple, flying costs less than driving and saves four days. For a family of four the costs come closer, and driving gives you a car in Swat, but it spends most of a week on the road.
Which way should you go?
- A week or less: fly to Islamabad. Nothing else leaves you enough time in Swat.
- Couples and small groups: fly, then either take the coach and hire a car in Mingora for the days you need it, or hire a car and driver from Islamabad for the whole trip. Our Swat trip cost guide prices both.

- Families with ten days or more who want their own car: drive, and make the road part of the holiday with nights in Multan and Islamabad.
