The easiest Swat bus service is Daewoo Express, which runs several coaches a day from its Rawalpindi terminal to Mingora in about three and a half to four hours, for roughly PKR 1,100 to 1,200 in 2026. Daewoo also runs to Mingora from Lahore, in about seven and a half to eight hours for roughly PKR 2,800 to 3,100, and from Peshawar in about three. Other coach companies, coasters and Hiace vans cover the same routes for less money and less comfort.
Every intercity bus stops in Mingora. To go further, to Malam Jabba, Madyan or Kalam, you change to a local van, a shared car or a hired car. This guide covers the terminals at each end, fares and journey times, the cheaper options, and how to get up the valley once you arrive.

Daewoo Express: the reliable choice
Daewoo is the coach most people from Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Lahore take to Swat. The buses are air-conditioned, seats are reserved, and they run from proper terminals rather than a roadside stop.
The terminals
- Swat: Amankot, on the GT Road in Mingora, opposite the PSO pump near GTS. This is on the main road into town from Barikot, not in the bazaar, so you will need a rickshaw or taxi to most hotels.
- Rawalpindi: the Daewoo terminal at Jhangi Syedan, near EME College. This is where the Swat coaches from the twin cities start.
- Islamabad: Daewoo lists a shuttle pick-up in G-7 Markaz. Ask when you book whether it connects with your Swat departure, or go straight to Rawalpindi.
- Lahore: the Thokar Niaz Baig terminal, at the start of the M-2.
- Peshawar: on the GT Road, opposite the general bus stand.

Fares rise with fuel prices, and Daewoo has changed them several times in recent years, so check the current fare in the app before you go. From Rawalpindi there are usually a handful of departures spread from early morning to late afternoon; from Lahore there are fewer, and the timings shift through the year.
Book a day or two ahead for a Friday or Saturday departure in summer, and several days ahead for Eid, when coaches to Swat sell out.
Other coaches, coasters and Hiace vans
Daewoo is not the only way. Several other companies run coaches to Mingora:
- Faisal Movers runs between Islamabad and Mingora.
- Al Tayyab Movers has run an overnight coach from Rawalpindi in 2026.
- Shahid Coach, a Swat-based company, runs from Lahore and has been cheaper than Daewoo on that route in 2026.
Below the coaches are the coasters and Hiace vans that leave Rawalpindi's general bus stands, including Pir Wadhai, when they are full. They are cheaper and leave often, but they are cramped, luggage goes on the roof and the driving can be fast. For a four-hour motorway run, the extra few hundred rupees for a coach buys a lot of comfort, particularly with children.
Whichever you choose, check the operator on Bookme or the operator's own app, where the timetable and the fare for your date are shown. Timings from a year ago, or from a YouTube video, are often wrong.
From Peshawar
Peshawar to Mingora is about 170 km, and the Daewoo coach takes about three hours via the M-1 and the Swat Motorway. Other coaches and vans run the same way from the city's bus stands.
Bear in mind that the UK government advises against all travel to Peshawar, as it does for Swat, and against all but essential travel to Mardan and Malakand districts on the way. From Karachi
A few companies, including Faisal Movers and Swat-based operators, run direct coaches from Karachi to Mingora. It is a journey of more than 1,500 km and at least 20 hours. Getting around once you reach Mingora
Mingora is the end of the line for intercity coaches, and it is a good base for lower Swat. For anywhere higher, you have four options.
- Local vans leave from Mingora's general bus stand for Madyan, Bahrain and Kalam. They are the cheapest way up the valley and stop often. To Kalam, allow four to five hours.
- Shared cars also run to Bahrain and Kalam. Each seat is sold separately and the car goes when it is full. It is quicker than a van and costs more.
- A car and driver hired for the day is the practical way to reach Malam Jabba, which has no useful public transport, and the most comfortable way to Kalam. Your hotel can arrange one; agree the price, the stops and the waiting time first.

Rickshaws are the easy way around Mingora and Saidu Sharif itself, including from the Daewoo terminal to your hotel, the Swat Museum and the bazaar. Agree the fare before you get in.
Tips for the journey
- Carry your CNIC. There are police checkposts on the road from Chakdara, and passengers are sometimes asked for ID.
- Keep warm clothes in your hand luggage from October to April. Mingora is cold at night in winter, and Kalam far colder.
- Keep valuables with you, not in the hold or on a van roof.
- Book the return before you leave. Coaches back from Mingora on a Sunday afternoon or at the end of Eid tend to fill up first.
Is the bus the right way to do Swat?
Yes, if you are travelling alone or as a couple, you are happy to base yourself in Mingora, or you want a cheap, comfortable way to the valley and will hire a car for a day or two once you are there, rather than paying for a car and driver to wait through the whole trip.
Probably not, if you are a family of four or more heading for Kalam, where the fares for everyone plus a hired car at the other end add up to more than driving, or if you want to stop wherever you like along the way.
