Rakaposhi and Diran: the peaks across the valley
Look south from Karimabad, across the Hunza River to the Nagar side of the valley, and the huge white mass filling the skyline is Rakaposhi, at 7,788 metres one of the highest mountains anywhere near a paved road in Pakistan. It is the mountain most first-time visitors ask about, and it is unmistakable: a single dominant summit rather than a ridge of several peaks.
East of Rakaposhi, on the same general ridgeline but usually appearing as a separate, slightly lower point, is Diran, at 7,266 metres. It is less photographed than Rakaposhi and easy to overlook until someone points it out, but on a clear day both are visible together from the same spot in town.
Locals call Rakaposhi "Dumani", often translated as "mother of mists", because cloud gathers around its upper face on many summer afternoons. Early morning, before the cloud builds, is consistently the best time to see the summit clearly. Ultar Sar and Lady Finger: the peaks behind the town
Turn to face north from Karimabad and the mountain rising almost directly above the town is Ultar Sar, 7,388 metres. Its south flank climbs more than 5,000 metres above the Hunza River in under 10 km, which is one of the steepest rises from valley floor to summit anywhere in the world, and it is why the mountain looks so close and so tall from town even though it is not the highest peak in view.
Beside Ultar Sar, on the same massif, stands the thin rock spire most people ask about by name: Lady Finger, also called Bublimotin, at around 6,000 metres. It is far lower than its neighbours but instantly recognisable, a narrow tooth of rock standing apart from the surrounding ice and snow. Further along the same northern skyline, less obvious unless you already know its shape, is Hunza Peak, also known as Bojahagur Duanasir II, at 7,329 metres.
Golden Peak and the rest of the Nagar skyline
Golden Peak, or Spantik, at 7,027 metres, sits further along the Nagar side of the valley, named for a pale marble pillar on its north-west face. It is not always a clean, obvious sight from central Karimabad the way Rakaposhi is, and it shows more clearly from certain angles and from higher viewpoints above town than from the bazaar itself.

- From the bazaar and rooftop cafés. Many guesthouses and restaurants in central Karimabad have rooftop seating with a view south to Rakaposhi and Diran, and north towards Ultar Sar and Lady Finger, without needing to go anywhere.
- From Baltit Fort. The fort sits above the old town on a natural vantage point, and its terraces give an open view across the valley to the Nagar peaks.
- From Eagle's Nest above Duikar. For the widest single view, including Rakaposhi, Diran, Golden Peak, Ultar Sar and Lady Finger together, the climb up to Eagle's Nest is the best-known viewpoint in the valley, particularly at sunrise or sunset.
When you will actually see them
Cloud is the main obstacle, not distance. Summer afternoons in particular tend to build cloud around the highest summits, so mornings, generally from soon after sunrise until mid-morning, give the clearest, most reliable views. Worth building time around?
If seeing the mountains clearly matters to you, don't treat it as guaranteed on any single evening. Build in at least two or three nights in Karimabad so a cloudy first day doesn't cost you the view altogether, and check the sky each morning rather than waiting until your last day to look for Rakaposhi and Ultar Sar at their best. Photographers and anyone visiting mainly for the scenery should prioritise mornings and consider the extra trip up to Eagle's Nest, which is worth the early start on a clear day.
