What Athmuqam is for
Athmuqam sits on the Neelum river partway up the valley, well below the snowline for most of the year, and functions as the administrative and commercial centre for the district. It has a market area, banks, a hospital and government offices, which the smaller villages further up, such as Kel, Sharda and Taobat, do not. Athmuqam has a working range of guest houses and small hotels aimed at tourists passing through, from simple rooms to more comfortable options, generally along or near the main road through town. It is not a scenic destination in its own right, so most people choose it for practical reasons: arriving late in the day, needing an early start further up the valley, or wanting a proper bed and hot food rather than pushing on to a smaller village after dark.

Breaking the drive at Athmuqam makes sense if you are starting from Muzaffarabad later than planned, if you want two shorter driving days instead of one long one, or if you are travelling with young children or older parents who would rather not be on mountain roads after dark. It also puts you closer to an early start for Kel, Sharda or the jeep tracks into the side valleys, which is useful if you have a full itinerary.
