Lahore to Kumrat Valley by Road: Route, Stops and Timings

Lahore to Kumrat Valley is about 700 to 730 km by road to Thal, the last village, and takes 13 to 14 hours of actual driving. The route is the M-2 to Islamabad, the M-1 and the Swat Motorway to Chakdara, the N-45 through Timergara to a turn just short of Dir, and a slow valley road up to Thal. Very few people should try it in one go: plan on two days each way, with a night in Islamabad or in Timergara or Dir.

The route in five stages

1. Lahore to Islamabad on the M-2: about 375 km, 4 to 4.5 hours. The M-2 starts at Thokar Niaz Baig and climbs through the Salt Range near Kallar Kahar. West of Rawalpindi it runs straight on into the M-1, so you don't need to enter Islamabad unless you are stopping there.
2. M-1 and Swat Motorway to Chakdara: 2 to 2.5 hours. Leave the M-1 at the Karnal Sher Khan interchange, where the M-16 Swat Motorway begins. Its first phase runs for about 80 km through the Malakand hills to Chakdara.
3. Chakdara to the Kumrat turn: about 100 km, around 3 hours. The N-45 heads north through Timergara, about 40 km from Chakdara, and climbs towards Dir. The Kumrat road leaves it at Chutiatan, roughly 10 km short of Dir town, at a gateway known as Bab-e-Kumrat.
4. The valley road to Thal: about 75 to 80 km, 3.5 to 4.5 hours. It follows the Panjkora upstream through Sheringal, Patrak, Barikot and Kalkot. This is the slowest part of the whole drive.
5. Thal to the forest by jeep. Ordinary cars stop in Thal. The camps, Kumrat waterfall and Kala Chashma are an hour or two further on by jeep.

How long does it really take?

The stages add up to 13 to 14 hours of driving. With breakfast, lunch, prayers and fuel, 15 to 16 hours door to door is realistic, and at Eid or after heavy rain it can be several hours more.

The problem with one long day is that the hardest road comes last. After ten hours at the wheel you reach a narrow, broken road above a fast river, with no lights, and for most of the year you would be on it in the dark. That is why we plan every Kumrat trip from Lahore with a night on the way.

Where to break the drive

Plan 1: a night in Islamabad

This is the easiest plan and the one we suggest for most families. Drive to Islamabad on the first day, which can be an afternoon departure after work. On the second day, leave Islamabad at 5 am and you reach Thal by about 2 or 3 pm, with the valley road done in daylight. It also gives you a sensible stop on the way home. Thal to Islamabad is already a nine to eleven hour day once you add the jeep out of the forest.

Plan 2: a night in Timergara or Dir

This gets you into the valley half a day earlier. Leave Lahore at about 5 am, pass Islamabad mid-morning without leaving the motorway, and reach Timergara or Dir by mid-afternoon, roughly nine and a half to ten and a half hours on the road. Sleep there, drive the valley road fresh the next morning, and reach Thal by late morning with the afternoon free for the forest.

Both towns have simple hotels. The plan suits groups of adults with two drivers; read the safety section below before choosing it.

Plan 3: driving overnight

Many group tours leave Lahore late at night and reach Dir around dawn. That works on a coach with a professional driver. In a family car it means the driver reaches the valley road at his least alert, and we don't recommend it. If you do hire a car and driver instead, agree in advance whether fuel, tolls and the driver's food and room are included.

Tolls, fuel and stops

The M-Tag has been compulsory on the motorways since 15 June 2026, and cash recharges ended at the end of June, so top up digitally before you leave and make sure the balance covers the round trip. From 6 July 2026 a car pays PKR 1,430 for the full M-2, a rate set until April 2027; the M-1 and the Swat Motorway charge separately. Tolls rise at least once a year, so treat these as a guide.

The round trip from Lahore to Thal is about 1,450 km before any local driving. A car averaging 12 km to the litre would need around 120 litres, and more in practice, because the valley road is slow, low-gear work.

Where to stop:

• On the M-2: the service areas at Sukheki, Sial, Bhera, Kallar Kahar and Chakri all have fuel, food and toilets.
• Timergara: banks, fuel and plenty of places to eat; the best lunch stop on the way up.
• Dir: the last real town. Fill the tank and take out enough cash for the jeep, rooms, meals and a spare night, because you should not count on an ATM beyond it.

What the last stretch is like

The road from Bab-e-Kumrat to Thal is a mix of old tarmac, gravel and sections under reconstruction. The rebuilding of the 44 km from Patrak to Thal had its third groundbreaking ceremony in November 2022, and residents still described the road as dilapidated in June 2026. An ordinary car can reach Thal in dry weather if it is driven slowly.

How many days do you need from Lahore?

Five days is the sensible minimum, with two days on the road each way around one full day in the valley:

With Plan 2 you can swap Islamabad for Dir on the first night and gain an afternoon in the forest on day 2. Add two more days if you want to walk to Jahaz Banda and Katora Lake. A three-day weekend from Lahore does not work: you would spend almost all of it in the car.

Is it safe to drive to Kumrat?

Pakistani tourists drive to Kumrat in large numbers every summer, but 2026 has been a difficult year for security in Dir. In mid-August a gun battle between police and militants ran for more than a day near Wari and the Usheri valley, and on the night of 15 August militants attacked the deputy commissioner's residence and a PTDC facility at Panakot near Dir town. Neither was on the Kumrat road itself, but both were close to the route.

Check local news and current police advice before you set off, drive only in daylight, and carry your CNIC for the checkposts. The UK government advises against all travel to Upper and Lower Dir and the N-45 north of Mardan, and against all but essential travel to Malakand and Mardan, which the Swat Motorway crosses. Is the drive from Lahore worth it?

With five days or more, yes. Kumrat is one of the few places in the north where you can sleep in a forest by a river, and the distance keeps it quieter than the valleys nearer Islamabad.
