Hunza in April: Blossom Week, Weather and Booking Tips

Hunza in April means blossom. Apricot trees usually peak in the second and third weeks of the month, most often between about 10 and 25 April, with the date moving by a week or two depending on how cold the winter was. Days are mild, around 10 to 20°C by most guides' figures, and nights are still close to freezing. It is also one of the busiest months of the year, so April is a trip to book early.

What happens in Hunza week by week in April

The blossom moves up the valley with altitude, so the month is a sequence, not a single event.

1. First week: the lower villages, including Ganish and Altit, bloom first.
2. Second and third weeks: the middle orchards and Karimabad's main streets are at their best. This is the usual peak.
3. Last week: upper villages such as Duikar come into bloom, and lower trees are already dropping petals.

Individual trees flower for only about ten days, so a week in Hunza gives more chance than a weekend. A late frost can cut a good year short, and a mild winter can bring everything forward by a week or two. No one can promise a date, so aim for the middle of the month and stay flexible.

What is the weather like in Hunza in April?

Spring weather is variable. Guides give daytime highs of about 10 to 20°C in the main valley, with nights between about 0 and 10°C. Published figures differ, partly because Karimabad, at about 2,500 metres, is colder than the highway towns lower down, so take the range as a guide.

Afternoons can bring cloud and a shower, and evenings are cool even after a warm day. A light waterproof, a fleece and a warm jacket cover most days. In the upper villages and at viewpoints such as Duikar you will want more, and snow is still visible on the higher ground.

What is closed in April?

April is a shoulder month for the high roads, and it matters if your plans include them.

• Khunjerab Pass: the Pakistan-China border historically reopened on 1 April, and 2024's reopening ceremony fell on that date. The border is now open all year for trade, but the road for day visitors may still be under snow. Ask in Sost or Karimabad before you go. See when Khunjerab Pass opens.
• Babusar Top: it is closed by snow through the spring. Dawn reported that the Mansehra-Naran-Jalkhad road, closed since November, had only just reopened at the very end of May 2026, so it is not a route into Hunza in April. See Babusar Top open or closed.

• Karakoram Highway through Hunza: open, and the valley itself is fully accessible.

So April is a valley trip: blossom, forts, terraces and village walks. Do not book it hoping for the pass.

What to do if the blossom is early or late

If you arrive before the peak, the lower villages will already be in flower, and the walk from Karimabad down to Altit gives you a good day whatever the state of the upper orchards. If you arrive after it, you will find petals on the ground and fresh green leaf, which is still a good time for photographs and much calmer.

How to book Hunza for April

Blossom weeks are the single busiest period, according to operators' guides, and properties fill several weeks ahead. One guide advises having accommodation confirmed by late February for a mid-April trip. That is an operator's advice rather than a rule, but it fits the pattern.

• Book the Karimabad and Altit hotels first. They fill before the rest.
• Weekends and the end of the school term are the hardest.
• Ask about heating. Nights are cold and not every room is warm.
• Have a fallback. If the blossom is early or late, extra nights let you adjust.

Getting there in April

Most visitors drive up the Karakoram Highway or fly to Gilgit and drive on. Spring road conditions depend on the winter; a wet spell can trigger landslides in the gorges, so allow an extra day on the way up and ask about conditions before each leg.

The UK government advises against all travel on the KKH between Mansehra and Chilas, which is the stretch through Besham and Dasu that most road travellers from Islamabad use, and Babusar is not an alternative in April because it is closed. Flying to Gilgit avoids the stretch. Pakistani travellers still use the road, but check local news and current police advice before you set out. Foreign-passport holders should check their own government's advice, because it can affect insurance.

Who April suits

April suits people who want blossom, mild days and the valley at its best, and who can accept cold nights and busy hotels. It is a good month for couples, photographers and families with older children.
