Nagar Valley starts about 65 to 70 kilometres north of Gilgit on the Karakoram Highway, roughly two hours by car. The first Nagar villages, including Ghulmet and Minapin, sit under Rakaposhi along the highway, and Nagar Khas and Hoper lie further on. From Gilgit you can go by private car or a shared minibus, and the whole trip is a paved road apart from the side tracks into the valley.

How far is Nagar Valley from Gilgit?
Sources put the first Nagar villages about 65 kilometres from Gilgit, and Minapin, the base for Rakaposhi and Diran treks, about 70 kilometres away. The Rakaposhi viewpoint is around two hours from Gilgit by road. Karimabad, the centre of Hunza, is about 100 kilometres from Gilgit, and Nagar Khas lies across the river from Karimabad.
Nagar and Hunza sit on opposite banks of the Hunza river, so "Nagar" covers a long stretch of the valley, and the distance depends on which village you mean. Confirm your guesthouse's location before you set out.
How long does the drive take?
Allow about two hours to reach the Minapin and Ghulmet area from Gilgit, and two to four hours for Karimabad and the villages further on. Published figures for Gilgit to Karimabad range from 2 to 4 hours because of stops, roadworks and traffic. It is the Karakoram Highway all the way, so the time depends on how many trucks you are behind and how often you stop for the views.
Leave Gilgit in the morning if you want to see Rakaposhi clearly, because cloud often builds later in the day.
What is the road like?
The main road is the Karakoram Highway, which is paved along this stretch. It is narrow in places, with trucks and buses, and rockfall can slow things after rain. Side roads into the villages are steeper and rougher, and the one to Hoper is a single jeep track; see Nagar to Hoper by jeep.
Take normal mountain-road care: don't drive at night if you can avoid it, and check with your hotel about any slides that morning.
Transport options from Gilgit
- Private car with a driver. The simplest option and the most flexible, since you can stop at the viewpoint and at Minapin. Ask your hotel in Gilgit to arrange one, and agree the price and stops beforehand.
- Shared minibus. Hiace-type minibuses run north from Gilgit towards Hunza, and they can drop you in Nagar villages on the highway. Departure times are informal and fill up on weekends and holidays.

- Fly to Gilgit and drive. A flight to Gilgit followed by the two-hour drive is the fastest way in; see Gilgit airport to Hunza.

Which villages to aim for

Getting to Gilgit safely
The Gilgit to Nagar road itself is not on the UK government's list of areas it advises against. If you are coming overland from Islamabad, however, the UK advises against all travel on the Karakoram Highway between Mansehra and Chilas (through Besham, Dasu and Sazin). Flying to Gilgit avoids that section, and in summer the Babusar route is the alternative. Foreign-passport holders should check their own government's advice, because it can void travel insurance. Pakistani travellers still use the highway, but should check local news and police advice on the day.
Is it worth going to Nagar from Gilgit?
Yes, and it is an easy add-on. Nagar is on the road to Hunza, so you can stop for the view and lunch, or spend a night, without a big detour. If you have only one day from Gilgit, the Rakaposhi viewpoint and Minapin make a comfortable half-day trip.
