Faisalabad to Swat is about 580 to 610 km by road, and most of it is on motorway: the M-4 from Faisalabad, the M-2 towards Islamabad, the M-1 towards Peshawar and then the Swat Motorway (M-16). Route planners say about seven hours, but with fuel, food and prayer stops, plan on 9 to 11. It is possible in one day, but it is a long one.

The motorway plan
- M-4 from Faisalabad to Pindi Bhattian. The M-4 runs from Pindi Bhattian through Faisalabad to Multan. The Faisalabad to Pindi Bhattian section opened in 2003.
- M-2 from Pindi Bhattian towards Islamabad. The M-2 is the Lahore to Islamabad motorway, and this is the longest leg of the journey.
- M-1 from Islamabad towards Peshawar. Take the M-1 and leave at the Karnal Sher Khan interchange.
- Swat Motorway (M-16) to Chakdara. The motorway runs from Karnal Sher Khan to the Chakdara bridge on the N-45, avoiding the old Malakand Pass road.
- Chakdara to Mingora. About 40 km on the N-45, roughly an hour and a half in busy traffic.

How long does it really take?
Faisalabad to Islamabad alone is around four to five hours. From Islamabad, Swat is reported at about three hours for the 247 km on the M-1 and M-16. That gives around eight hours of pure driving, and stops push it to nine or ten.
Traffic near Islamabad and Rawalpindi, toll plazas and the weekend rush towards Swat all add time. Eid weekends and Friday evenings are the worst.
Where to break the journey
- The motorway service areas on the M-2 and M-1 are the easiest places for fuel and a meal.
- Islamabad is the natural overnight stop if you would rather start the Swat leg fresh. It also gives you a chance to buy anything you forgot.

If you can, leave Faisalabad very early so that you reach the Swat Motorway in daylight. The hills beyond Chakdara are not a road to drive tired.
Is Swat safe to drive to?
Check the current situation before you go. The UK government's travel advice (updated 22 September 2026) advises against all travel to Swat and against all but essential travel to Malakand and Mardan, which the motorway route passes near. A suicide bomber attacked the Kabal police station in Swat on 2 August 2026, killing 17.

A practical tip
Keep the car's spare tyre, coolant and brakes in good order before leaving, as the last hour up the Swat valley includes hill driving with truck traffic. Fill up at the last motorway station before Chakdara.
Is the drive worth it, or should you fly or take the bus?
If you have a car and two drivers, the drive is straightforward, and a stop in Islamabad breaks it well. If one person is driving, a single 10-hour day is tiring and not the best start to a family holiday. The alternative is a bus to Islamabad and onward transport, which involves a change.
