Miani battlefield
Why go: It is the site of the 1843 battle that led to the British annexation of Sindh, marked by a worn obelisk in open country.

Kotri
Why go: Kotri is the town across the Indus from Hyderabad, about 18 km away and roughly 20 minutes' drive, with the Kotri Barrage and river views.
Tip: Jamshoro is about ten minutes further, and Kotri works as a half-day. It combines well with a run to Jamshoro. Go in the cooler hours.
Tando Allahyar and the Ramapir temple
Why go: The Ramapir temple is one of the main Hindu pilgrimage sites of Sindh, and its three-day mela is the second largest in Pakistan.
Tip: The mela falls in Bhadrapada, usually late August to September, and moves each year. Off the mela, the temple is quiet. Dress modestly and go with respect. See our Ramapir temple guide.
Keenjhar Lake
Why go: It is the second-largest freshwater lake in Pakistan and a source of drinking water for Thatta and Karachi. It sits on the N-5 about 80 km south of Hyderabad and about 30 km from Thatta.

Makli Necropolis and Thatta
Why go: Makli, on the edge of Thatta, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, listed in 1981, and its tombs record Sindh's history between the 14th and 18th centuries. Thatta's Shah Jahan Mosque is close by.

Ranikot Fort
Why go: Ranikot, built in 1819 under Nawab Wali Mohammad Khan Leghari, has a wall of about 32 to 35 km, and is often described as the largest fort in the world.
Tip: The road is the difficulty. A rough sandy track links the fort to the Indus Highway near Sann, so a high-clearance vehicle and a driver who knows the way are better than a low sedan.
