Hyderabad to Thatta is a drive of roughly 70 to 100 kilometres down the N-5 National Highway: across the Indus at Kotri, south past Jhirk, and on to Thatta, which takes about two hours. It is one of the easiest day trips from Hyderabad, with the Makli Necropolis and the Shah Jahan Mosque as the two reasons to go, and Keenjhar Lake as an optional extra.

This guide gives the route, the distance question, the order that works for a day, and what to check before you set out.

The route: Kotri, Jhirk and the N-5

Leave Hyderabad on the N-5 towards Karachi and cross the Indus at Kotri. Beyond Kotri you pass Jhirk, a former river port on the right bank of the Indus in Thatta district, and continue south-west to Thatta. Thatta, Kotri and Hyderabad all lie on the N-5, so there is no real route choice: it is one road.

On distance, sources do not agree. Route planners give 101 to 102 km and about one hour 40 minutes to just under two hours. Wikipedia's N-5 table lists Thatta at km 94, Kotri at km 145 and Hyderabad at km 163 from Karachi, which would put Thatta only about 70 km from Hyderabad. The difference may come from where each measure starts and ends, so plan for two hours with stops and do not hold anyone to a number.

What to see in Thatta

Thatta was the medieval capital of Sindh and the seat of three successive dynasties. Two sites make the day:

  • Makli Necropolis, about 6 km from the town and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981, with tombs of the 14th to 18th centuries from the Samma, Tarkhan, Arghun and Mughal periods. Estimates of the number of graves range from 500,000 to a million across about 10 square km. Our Makli Necropolis guide covers the main tombs and Makli photography the rules.
  • Shah Jahan Mosque, built in 1644 to 1647 with an eastern addition completed in 1659, known for 93 domes and an elaborate display of blue and turquoise tile work. It has no minarets. See Shah Jahan Mosque, Thatta.

Keenjhar Lake as an add-on

Keenjhar Lake is about 36 km from Thatta and is a Ramsar site and wildlife sanctuary, 24 km long and 6 km wide, with a shrine in the middle for Noori Jam Tamachi. Visitors from Karachi, Hyderabad and Thatta come for picnics and boating. It is popular at weekends, so go on a weekday if you want it quiet, and see Keenjhar Lake.

A day plan from Hyderabad

  1. Leave by 7 or 8 am. Cross Kotri before the traffic builds up.
  2. Reach Thatta by mid-morning. Start at the Shah Jahan Mosque while the courtyard is cool.
  3. Makli late morning, then lunch. The necropolis is open ground with little shade. Take water and a hat.
  4. Keenjhar in the afternoon if you have energy, or head back.
  5. Be on the N-5 towards Hyderabad before dark.

It works as a long day, but it is better with a stop for tea at Jhirk or Kotri and no attempt to add the Chaukhandi tombs, which are on the Karachi side. Our Thatta day trip from Karachi shows the full circuit if you are continuing to the coast.

Practical notes

  • Heat: Thatta has a hot semi-arid climate with about 250 mm of rain a year. Summers are hard going at Makli; winter mornings are the best time.
  • Fuel and food: fill up in Hyderabad or Kotri. Thatta has simple eating places, but few that we can recommend by name.
  • Tickets and hours: these change, so check on arrival rather than relying on any figure we could print.
  • Respect the sites: Makli is a cemetery and the mosque is in use. Dress modestly, remove shoes where asked and do not climb on the tombs.

Is it safe?

Thatta and the N-5 corridor are on a normal Pakistani tourist circuit and are not on the UK government's list of areas where it advises against travel. Check local news before leaving, drive in daylight, and watch for trucks and slow vehicles on the N-5. Our Hyderabad day trips guide gives other options if conditions change.

Is it worth the trip from Hyderabad?

Yes, if you care about history or architecture: Makli and the mosque are among the best in Sindh and the distance is short. It is less rewarding in midsummer or for visitors who do not like walking in heat. If you want a different day out, see our Hyderabad itinerary and travel guide.
