Hyderabad to Sehwan Sharif is about 146 kilometres by road, and the drive takes roughly two hours in a car when traffic is normal. You cross the Indus at Kotri, pass Jamshoro and then follow the Indus Highway (N-55) north along the west bank of the river. Allow closer to three hours by bus or in heavy traffic, and more during the urs.
The road is straightforward to follow but it has a poor reputation, so this guide covers the route, the public transport options, the state of the highway and the safety questions people ask.

The route: Kotri, Jamshoro and the Indus Highway
The Indus Highway (N-55) is a 1,264 km national highway running from Kotri to Peshawar, and construction began at Kotri in 1981. From Hyderabad you cross the Indus on the Kotri bridge into Jamshoro District, then take the N-55 north. Sehwan is on the same road, so there is no route choice to speak of: it is the Indus Highway all the way.
If you are driving, fill the tank in Hyderabad or Jamshoro. Services thin out once you are on the highway. Our guide to places to visit in Jamshoro lists stops along the way, including Manchar Lake for those with time.
What condition is the road in?
The 130 km Jamshoro to Sehwan stretch of the N-55 has long been the problem section. A dual carriageway project launched in December 2017 at a cost of Rs 14 billion repeatedly missed its deadlines. In early 2025 the Sindh government wrote that about 24 km were still unfinished, and said the lack of a dual carriageway had been linked to 197 accidents and over 156 deaths in five years.
We could not confirm a final completion date. Expect a mix of dual and single-lane road, trucks, slow vehicles and animals. Drive in daylight, keep your speed down and avoid overtaking in the unfinished sections.
By bus or coach
Local buses and vans run between Hyderabad and Sehwan, and the trip is usually described as about two hours. Coaches that connect Karachi with Sehwan also use the Indus Highway. We found no reliable published timetable or fare for the Hyderabad leg, and bus fares on this corridor change, so ask at the Hyderabad terminal or the coach company on the day. Expect to arrive in the town centre near the main road rather than at the shrine itself.
By train
Route planners say there is no direct train from Hyderabad to Sehwan. You would go to Kotri Junction first, where Pakistan Railways runs a service to Sehwan Sharif roughly once a day, about three hours. Timings change, so check Pakistan Railways before planning around this. For most visitors the road is simpler.
By taxi or hired car
A private taxi or hired car covers the 146 km in about two hours. One route planner put taxi costs at around $23 to $29, but this is a rough estimate, so agree the price and the return plan in advance. Hotels in Hyderabad can usually arrange a driver; see our guide to hotels in Hyderabad.
Stops between Hyderabad and Sehwan
There is little to stop for on the highway itself, which is part of why the drive feels long. Two places are worth knowing about.
- Jamshoro, just across the river from Hyderabad, is where the motorway-style traffic of Hyderabad ends and the Indus Highway proper begins, so fill the tank and buy water here.
- Manchar Lake, about 18 km from Sehwan on the west side of the Indus, is a large lake. It is about 23.5 km long and 12 km wide, though its area swings from roughly 36 square km in dry periods to as much as 500 in the monsoon. The Mohana "boat people" have long lived on it. The lake has suffered from salinity, pollution and a collapse in fish and migratory bird numbers, so go for the setting and the community, not for wildlife.
Treat both as optional. If you are on a day trip, the clock is better spent at the shrine than at the lake.
How to time the day
A realistic day trip from Hyderabad runs like this:
- Leave by 7 or 8 in the morning to be through Jamshoro before the heavy trucks build up.
- Reach Sehwan by about 10, park or get dropped near the shrine area and walk in.
- Visit the shrine and the old fort in the late morning, and have lunch in the bazaar.
- Start back by mid-afternoon, so that the Jamshoro stretch is behind you by dusk.
The shrine is far busier during the urs, so ask locally about crowds and follow the instructions of staff and police on the day.
What to see when you arrive
Sehwan is known for the shrine of Lal Shahbaz Qalandar and its nightly dhamaal; read the Sehwan Sharif guide, the dhamaal timing guide and Sehwan Fort. If you want to stay the night, our Sehwan hotels guide has options. During the annual urs roads and the town are extremely crowded; plan extra time or avoid the dates.
Is it safe?
Pakistani visitors travel to Sehwan every day, especially during the urs. A suicide bombing at the shrine in February 2017 killed more than 80 people, and crowded religious sites remain a security concern, so expect checkpoints and bag checks. The UK government advises against all but essential travel to parts of Sindh north of Nawabshah, and Sehwan lies close to that line, so read the current wording. Foreign-passport holders should know this can void insurance. Check local news and police advice before you go, and see is Sehwan Sharif safe.
Day trip or overnight?
A day trip from Hyderabad works: leave early, reach Sehwan by mid-morning, visit the shrine and fort, and leave before dark. If you want the evening dhamaal you need to stay, because the drive back after dark on the N-55 is the part to avoid. Coming from Karachi instead? See Karachi to Sehwan Sharif, and our travel guide has general road advice.
